Mosgaard Whisky Dark Peat – Only a limited number of bottles have been produced of this edition of Mosgaard Whisky.
Mosgaard Dark Peat is a rare and uncompromising organic Danish single malt, where intensity, craftsmanship, and mystery unite at a higher level. This release is the result of something as unusual as extreme evaporation during maturation – over 44% of the whisky disappeared from the casks, nearly ten times more than normal. The result is just 340 bottles, but with a striking intensification of flavor, depth, and concentration. Perhaps the angels had exceptionally good taste this time.
Dark Peat is just under 5.5 years old and matured in four small octaves of European oak: three casks of French oak of about 60 liters and one virgin oak cask of Hungarian oak of 70 liters. The choice of European oak is central to the whisky’s character. The French oak contributes deep, spicy, and structured notes, far from the classic caramel sweetness known from bourbon casks. The Hungarian oak adds pronounced tannins, color, and a raw, natural edge, giving the whisky its own expression and creating a clear connection to Mosgaard’s iconic Black Peat – without copying it.
The whisky was distilled in May 2020 on peated malt with the same smoke level as Black Peat. On the nose and palate, you encounter deep, dark smoke, spicy notes reminiscent of gingerbread, maritime associations such as ship decks and tar, rounded off by a surprisingly elegant sweetness that recalls vanilla cookies. The smoke is intense yet balanced, and the casks add complexity rather than dominance.
Dark Peat is bottled at 50%, a strength that invites contemplation and slow enjoyment. It appears slightly lighter and brighter than the legendary Black Peat, which in 2023 was crowned Europe’s best single malt and is now highly sought after among collectors. Dark Peat is not a repetition, but a respectful tribute to the same philosophy, method, and inspiration – told with its own voice.
