VAT 69 Whisky

The story goes that founder William Sanderson tasted his way through a hundred casks to find the best blend, and that it was pure chance that cask number 69 won. The name VAT 69 was born from that anecdote and has followed the whisky for more than a century since. It's one of those blended whiskies whose story is just as memorable as the flavour itself.

About VAT 69 Whisky

VAT 69 is a Scotch blended whisky whose name, according to legend, comes from the 69th storage cask the founder judged best during a tasting. For the newcomer it's a smooth, easy-drinking blended whisky with caramel and a hint of smoke; for the connoisseur, VAT 69 is interesting as one of the oldest blended whisky brands still in production, one of the first to use modern, aggressive marketing and thereby help shape how whisky would later be sold globally.

History & background

The whisky was launched in 1882 by William Sanderson in Leith and quickly became popular, thanks in part to early, aggressive marketing, a rarity in the whisky industry at the time. Sanderson reportedly spent a large share of his fortune on advertising at a time when most whisky houses sold purely on reputation and word of mouth. VAT 69 became one of the best-selling blended whisky brands in the world during the interwar years and is today owned by Diageo, which still markets it as an accessible, classic blended whisky.

Production & style

The whisky is composed of malt and grain whisky and aged in oak casks using classic Scottish blending methods.
