A - Z White Wine

A - Z White Wine

  • Bottle of Austrian white wine from Weingut Hagn with pale label
    Item no.: 22206-50299

For more than 300 years, the Hagn family has grown grapes in Weinviertel, Austria's northernmost wine region. Grüner Veltliner Classic is the essence of the place - fresh, elegant and carrying the characteristic pepper note that has made the grape the country's signature.

    Expert's Description

Grüner Veltliner Classic is a White Wine from Weinviertel in Austria made from the Grüner Veltliner grape, bottled at 12.5% ABV.

Weingut Hagn destems the grapes and macerates them for four hours on the skins to bring out aroma and structure, after which the wine matures for three months in steel tanks - preserving purity, freshness and crisp acidity. With residual sugar of 3.2 g/l and acidity of 5.6 g/l, the wine is dry, fresh and well balanced. Alongside Grüner Veltliner, the family also grows Riesling, Gelber Muskateller and Zweigelt, all farmed with the same respect for the terroir.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

A combination of fruit and spice - stone fruit, citrus and the classic white pepper note.

    Palate

Elegant and complex, with juicy fruit and lively acidity.

    Serving & Food Pairing

Along the Loire's northeasternmost vineyards, where limestone and flint mix in the soil, the Gaudry family has grown Sauvignon Blanc for six generations. Traditionnel 2024 is the appellation's answer to what Pouilly-Fume tastes like when kept simple and honest.

    Expert's Description

Nicolas Gaudry 2024 Traditionnel Pouilly-Fume is a White Wine from the Loire Valley made from Sauvignon Blanc with an alcohol content of 12.5%. The estate is based in Tracy-sur-Loire, right in the heart of the Pouilly-Fume appellation, where the soil shifts between limestone, clay and the region's signature flint, which gives the wine its smoky minerality. The name Fume does not refer to smoking the grapes, but to the flinty character in the aroma. Nicolas Gaudry took over the family estate in 2003 and has since expanded it from 2 to around 30 hectares, farmed under HVE certification. Traditionnel is the house's entry cuvee, fermented in steel tanks to preserve the fruit's freshness and the soil's minerality.

  • Bottle of Danish white wine from Christianelund Vingård with pale label
    Item no.: 059763-615-1030

Near Flemming, close to Vejle, lies Christianelund. The Gold family planted their first vines in 2014 - the original plan was horses, but the family grew to six children, and a vineyard came instead. Solaris Øst is named after the east-facing plot, where the grapes are woken by the morning sun.

    Expert's Description

Christianelund Gold 2021 Solaris Øst is a White Wine from Christianelund Vingård in Denmark made from the Solaris grape, bottled at 11.7% ABV.

Solaris is a hybrid grape developed in 1975 in Freiburg by researcher Norbert Becker - bred specifically for climates like Denmark's, which sit right on the edge of what grapevines can handle. At Christianelund, the Solaris plots are split into two sections, one facing west and one facing east, and this bottle comes from the east-facing plot, where the grapes get morning dew and the cooler early sun. That gives the wine a touch more tension in the acidity than its western sibling.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Gooseberry and citrus, with a touch of elderflower - slightly sharper in outline than you usually see from Solaris.

    Palate

Fresh and crisp, with fine tension and a touch of green apple.

    Finish

Clean and refreshing, with the acidity being the last thing to linger.

    Serving & Food Pairing

Serve chilled at 8-10°C in a white wine glass. The fresh acidity makes it a natural match for fish, shellfish and chicken - or enjoy it as a light aperitif.

On the same slopes where Niepoort has sourced Port grapes for centuries, the old vines also grow that give this white wine its depth - a reminder that the Douro Valley's white grapes have long deserved more attention.

    Expert's Description

Niepoort Redoma Branco 2021 is a Portuguese white wine from the Douro Valley, bottled at 11%.

The grapes come from old vines on the right bank of the Douro River, planted at 500-600 metres on mica schist soils, and form a field blend of Rabigato, Códega do Larinho, Viosinho, Donzelinho and Gouveio. The wine is gently pressed, left to settle for 24 hours and then ferments spontaneously in French oak barrels of 228 and 500 litres, where it also ages for nine months on the fine lees.

Niepoort was founded in 1842 by the Dutch van der Niepoort family in Vila Nova de Gaia and for generations was known solely for Port. Under Dirk Niepoort's leadership, the house's Douro still wines, including the Redoma range, have since become just as central to its identity.

Redoma Branco is the sister wine to the house's Redoma Tinto and shares the same philosophy of old vines and minimal intervention, applied here to the white grape varieties the Douro Valley has to offer.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Ripe apples, hazelnut and a faintly smoky minerality from the schist soil.

    Palate

Full-bodied and structured with citrus, stone fruit and a hint of vanilla from the oak ageing, carried by lively acidity.

    Finish

Long and elegant, with persistent minerality and a dry, nutty close.

The name is straightforward: an invitation, not a wrapper. There are no grand words about terroir on the label, only a reminder that wine, in the end, is meant to be drunk and enjoyed.

    Expert's Description

Niepoort Drink Me Branco 2021 is a Portuguese white wine from the Douro Valley, bottled at 11%.

The wine is a blend of several white Douro grape varieties, including Gouveio, Rabigato, Viosinho, Bical and Códega do Larinho, each contributing its own layer of aroma and acidity to the finished result. The style is deliberately light and straightforward, made to be drunk young rather than set aside.

Niepoort was founded in 1842 by the Dutch van der Niepoort family and, since the late 1980s under Dirk Niepoort's leadership, has expanded its range well beyond the classic Ports. Drink Me belongs to the house's more relaxed side, where the focus is on immediate drinking pleasure rather than complexity or long ageing potential.

The line is meant as a counterweight to the more serious Douro still wines the house also produces, aimed at those looking for a tasty everyday bottle without compromising on the craft behind it.

Loureiro means laurel in Portuguese, and the grape is named for the very floral scent it leaves in the glass - an aromatic counterpart to the more citrus-driven Alvarinho from the same collaboration.

    Expert's Description

Niepoort ADN Loureiro 2021 is a Portuguese white wine from Vinho Verde, made from 100% Loureiro and bottled at 12%.

The grapes are hand-picked into small crates and transported quickly and cool to the winery, where they are gently pressed and cold-settled for 48-72 hours before a long, slow fermentation at low temperature in stainless steel. The wine is then aged on its fine lees with regular stirring, adding structure without taking away from its freshness.

Like the house's Alvarinho, this wine is a collaboration between Dirk Niepoort, fifth generation of the family behind the Douro-based house founded in 1842, and Anselmo Mendes, one of the winemakers who has defined modern Vinho Verde.

Where Alvarinho is often praised for its salinity, Loureiro is known for its floral, perfumed aroma and slightly lighter body - two sides of the same region's character, gathered under the ADN name.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Intense floral scent of elderflower and white rose, complemented by green apple and a touch of herbs.

    Palate

Lively and juicy with citrus and green fruit, carried by a bright, almost salty acidity.

    Finish

Fresh and light, with a lingering floral echo and a faint herbal bitterness.

Two surnames, one wine project: the letters ADN stand for Anselmo & Dirk Niepoort, a partnership between the head of the Douro house and one of Vinho Verde's most respected winemakers.

    Expert's Description

Niepoort ADN Alvarinho 2021 is a Portuguese white wine from Vinho Verde, made from 100% Alvarinho and bottled at 12.5%.

The grapes come from the sub-region of Monção e Melgaço near the Minho River, growing in poor granite soils that push the grape to concentrate its aroma and acidity. The wine ferments slowly in stainless steel and then rests for four months on the lees with regular bâtonnage, giving it more body and weight than a typical light Vinho Verde.

The wine is a collaboration between Dirk Niepoort, fifth generation of the Dutch-Portuguese family that has run the house since 1842, and Anselmo Mendes, one of the winemakers credited with lifting Alvarinho from an everyday drink to an internationally recognised quality grape.

The ADN series is Niepoort's way of moving beyond the Douro Valley, showing that the house's philosophy of terroir and minimal intervention can also be applied in other classic Portuguese wine regions.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Citrus fruit, green apple and a faint saline scent hinting at the closeness to the Atlantic.

    Palate

Full-bodied for an Alvarinho, with ripe citrus, stone fruit and a creamy texture from the lees ageing.

The name means "the docile one" - a wine that yields to time rather than fighting it, letting the grape's own sweetness and freshness speak without raising its voice.

    Expert's Description

Niepoort Docil Moscatel 2019 is a Portuguese white wine from the Douro Valley, made from 100% Moscatel Galego and bottled at 9%.

The grapes grow above 500 metres near Alijó and are picked in mid-September, then transported under refrigeration to Niepoort's Quinta de Nápoles estate. Fermentation begins in stainless steel at low temperature on the fine lees and is interrupted by cooling, so that some of the grape's natural sweetness is preserved alongside its bright acidity.

Niepoort was founded by the Dutch van der Niepoort family, who settled in Vila Nova de Gaia in 1842. Today the house is run by Dirk Niepoort, fifth generation of the family, who since the late 1980s has added a growing range of Douro still wines alongside the house's classic Ports.

Docil Moscatel belongs to this newer part of the portfolio and is meant as a small, aromatic aside to the house's more serious bottlings - a wine made to be enjoyed for its immediate charm rather than its ageing potential.

    Tasting Notes

Intense orange blossom, fresh grape skin and a touch of citrus peel giving an almost perfumed impression.

    Palate

    Expert's Description

Niepoort Fantasi Branco 2018 is a Portuguese white wine from the Douro Valley, bottled at 11.5%.

The wine is made from a blend of white Douro grapes, hand-picked and fermented at controlled, low temperatures in stainless steel to preserve fresh fruit and an easy, approachable expression. The low alcohol level reflects exactly the light, everyday style the house has aimed for.

It all started in a tractor shed in Stellenbosch, where José Conde and brothers Tyrrel and Philip Myburgh made their first 600 cases of wine in 2001. They named the project MAN - after their wives Marie, Anette and Nicky. Today Chenin Blanc makes up around a quarter of production.

    Expert's Description

MAN Family Wines Chenin Blanc is a White Wine from the Coastal Region of South Africa made from the Chenin Blanc grape, bottled at 13.5% ABV.

The wine comes from the Agter-Paarl area, known for its rolling hills and deep shale soils in a Mediterranean-like climate. The vines are farmed sustainably and mostly dry-farmed, which tends to give grapes with more concentrated flavour. Since starting out in 2001, MAN has grown from 600 to over 200,000 cases a year and is now exported to more than 30 countries - but Chenin Blanc has remained a core focus throughout.

  • Bottle of 11th Hour Cellars Chardonnay white wine from California
    Item no.: 22227865479-1106-197280478

The name 11th Hour Cellars refers to a philosophy of waiting until the very last moment with the crucial decisions - when to harvest the grapes, how long fermentation should run, and how long the wine should age in barrel - to bring out as much fruit as possible in the glass.

    Expert's Description

11th Hour Cellars Chardonnay is a White Wine from California, USA, made from Chardonnay with an alcohol content of 12%. The grapes come from the areas around Sacramento and Lodi in the northern San Joaquin Valley, where sandy loam soil, moderate humidity and cool breezes from the Sacramento Delta give the grapes good conditions for slow ripening. The winery is part of Scotto Family Wines and places emphasis on waiting until the last possible moment with the most important vinification decisions to highlight the grape's natural, intense fruit profile.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Tropical fruit and a hint of citrus on the nose.

    Palate

    Expert's Description

Domaine Begude Chardonnay Arcturus 2016 is a White Wine from Limoux, France made from 100% Chardonnay, bottled at 13.5% ABV.

Distinct oak character upfront, followed by citrus aromas, spice and floral scent.

  • Bottle of Domaine Begude Pet-Nat La Folie sparkling wine
    Item no.: 222276865480-67093-0315

La Folie means "the madness" - a fitting name for a pet-nat, where the grape juice is left to keep fermenting straight in the bottle, with little control over exactly how the bubbles turn out.

    Expert's Description

Domaine Begude Pet-Nat La Folie de Begude 2021 is a Sparkling Wine from Limoux, France made from 100% Chenin Blanc, bottled at 11.5% ABV.

Pet-nat, short for pétillant naturel, is an old method where the wine is bottled while still fermenting, so the carbon dioxide is captured naturally without added sugar or yeast. This edition is made without added sulphur and may therefore appear slightly hazy, with the odd natural tartrate crystal at the bottom.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Fresh apple, pear and citrus with light floral and yeasty notes.

    Palate

Crisp acidity and a gentle mousse give a lively, playful and slightly rustic experience.

    Finish

Clean and refreshing with a hint of white peach.

    Serving & Food Pairing

Serve well chilled at 6-8°C in a white wine glass. Pairs as an aperitif or with light tapas and fresh shellfish.
