Gin & Tonic

Here at Whisky.dk we absolutely love gin and tonic. We have therefore put together a large selection of the best gin brands and tonic water as well as an exclusive selection of Danish gin. We want to share our great passion and love for gin and tonic, so sit back and enjoy our gin and tonic universe.

Gin is originally from the Netherlands and is a contraction of the French word for juniper. They started mixing alcohol with juniper in the 17th century for kidney pain. This spread to England, and the English soldiers got a taste for it. The gin was later sold at the pharmacy and used against ailments. Today, gin is known for use in drinks such as gin and tonic, dry Martini and Tom Collins.

  • Stauning Navy Gin Danish Dry Gin Small Batch Denmark 70 cl 57,3%
    Item no.: 222266-96566

Stauning sits where the Skjern River runs into Ringkøbing Fjord, and the fjord opens further out towards the North Sea - a small fishing town on Denmark's west coast, long before anyone here ever thought about whisky. With the Navy Strength version of their gin, Stauning brings that maritime heritage back into the light, cranked all the way up to 57.3%.

    Expert's Description

Stauning Navy Strength Gin is a Danish Navy Strength Gin, distilled at Stauning in Western Jutland and bottled at 57.3%.

The recipe is identical to the award-winning Stauning Danish Dry Gin at 43% - the same juniper, coriander seed, angelica root, orris root, liquorice root and lemon peel, plus pine shoots harvested locally around the distillery. The botanicals steep in alcohol for 24 hours before the whole batch is distilled together in a single heart cut using the one-shot method: only the middle of the run - the heart - makes it into the bottle, while the heads and tails are discarded.

The difference comes down to how much water is added afterwards. At 57.3% there is simply less water and more of the actual distillate in the glass, and it shows: the gin turns more aromatic, the botanicals stand out more clearly, the finish lasts longer, and the texture feels fuller than the 43% version.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Juniper and citrus arrive first, followed by a mild spice and light herbal notes. Behind it sits a faint hint of pine from the West Jutland pine shoots.

    Palate

Clean and full-bodied, with juniper and citrus up front. The mild spice and herbal character follow close behind, and a light touch of pine carries the juniper all the way through.

    Finish

Soft, round and well balanced - surprisingly easy-going for something bottled at a full 57.3%.

    Did You Know?

Navy Strength refers to a strength of 57% or above. Before alcohol content could be measured precisely, sailors would soak gunpowder in the spirit and try to light it - if the gunpowder still caught, the spirit was "proof", above that threshold. The name Navy Strength is said to come from gunpowder staying usable even after an unlucky barrel leak in a ship's hold.

  • Bottle of Boigin Saffron Gin from Sardinia, Italy
    Item no.: 2222786539-8745

The Sardinian coast smells of salt and juniper, and somewhere between the cliffs and the golden saffron fields, Silvio Carta has distilled a Gin that carries the soul of the island with it. Boigin Saffron is the golden edition of the house's classic Gin, coloured and spiced by one of the world's most coveted spices.

    Expert's description

Boigin Saffron is an Italian Gin from the Silvio Carta distillery on Sardinia, double distilled in traditional copper alembics with fresh Sardinian juniper and refined with genuine DOP saffron, bottled at 40%.

The gin is a further development of the house's classic Boigin Gin, where the characteristic juniper, citrus peel and Mediterranean herbs are joined by saffron threads from the island's own DOP-protected saffron area around San Gavino Monreale. The saffron alone gives the gin its deep, golden colour.

Behind the bottle stands the family company Silvio Carta, founded in the early 1950s in Baratili San Pietro on Sardinia. The company was originally known for its Vernaccia di Oristano, but has since expanded with Mirto, Vermouth, Limoncello and a range of Gin variants, all built on the island's local ingredients. Boigin Saffron won Bronze at The International Wine & Spirit Competition in 2022 and received the Red Seal at The WineHunter Award in both 2020 and 2021.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Citrus and freshly picked juniper meet Mediterranean herbs, and behind them lies the sweet, almost silky aroma of saffron, floral and lightly earthy at once.

    Palate

Round and full-bodied, with a spiced warmth from the saffron that intertwines with sweet citrus and a touch of florals.

    Finish

A long, warmly spiced close, where the Mediterranean herbs and the saffron's finish linger in the glass.

  • Citrusgin Premium London Dry Citrus Gin Whisky.dk Silvio Carta Italy 70 cl 38%
    Item no.: 2226539-65896

The sun beats down on Sardinia's lemon groves, where the air hangs heavy with peeled citrus and wild Mediterranean herbs. Somewhere between salt water and stony ground, this gin was born — a tribute to one family's lifelong love of citrus.

    Expert's Description

Citrusgin is an Italian London Dry Citrus Gin from Silvio Carta, distilled in Sardinia and bottled at 38%.

Silvio Carta has more than 60 years of experience making wine and spirits on the island, and although the founder himself is in his 90s, he still tends his own lemon groves, used among other things in the family's Limoncello. Today the distillery is run by his grandchildren, who continue the tradition of Sardinian gin and liqueurs made with local herbs such as myrtle, sage and lentischio.

This Citrusgin was created specially for Whisky.dk in a small batch — Batch 001 — building on the house's signature style: citrus up front, supported by mint, sage and the resinous, faintly spicy lentischio, a wild shrub that grows alongside juniper and myrtle in Sardinia's coastal scrubland.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Fresh citrus peel, mostly lemon with a touch of blood orange, meets a hint of mint and dried Mediterranean herbs.

    Palate

Round and spiced with clear citrus, where sage and the resinous lentischio add depth, and a faintly salty, coastal undertone echoes the island's location by the sea.

    Finish

Long and refreshing, with mint and citrus peel lingering the longest.

  • Bottle of Hendrick's Another Gin in white bottle
    Item no.: 22227865-0011

Cucumber and rose have been Hendrick's signature for more than 25 years. So when master distiller Lesley Gracie set out to create something new, she kept the familiar backbone and added orange blossom and cacao beans instead.

    Expert's description

Hendrick's Another is a Scottish Dry Gin distilled at Hendrick's Gin Palace in Girvan and bottled at 41.4%.

The gin is distilled on the two distinctive stills from 1966, a Bennett still built in 1860 and a rare Carter-Head still from 1948, both bought at auction by Hendrick's founder Charles Gordon from the closed-down Taplow distillery in London.

The Bennett still produces a fuller, more robust spirit, while the Carter-Head lends a lighter, more fragrant character. The two distillates are then married with Hendrick's signature cucumber and rose infusions.

For Another, Lesley Gracie added orange blossom and cacao beans to the 11 classic botanicals, creating a spicier, creamier take on the familiar Hendrick's style.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

The nose offers soft, floral orange blossom and a hint of cacao layered over the classic juniper base.

    Palate

The palate is round with juniper at its core, waves of citrus and a dry, cacao-tinged depth that gives the gin a creamy fullness.

    Finish

The finish is smooth and rounded, with a last note of dark cacao and light sweetness from the orange blossom.

Etsu means "pleasure" in Japanese, and the gin lives up to the name. It is distilled on the island of Hokkaido with water from the Taisetsu Mountains and botanicals rarely found in a gin bottle west of Japan.

    Expert's description

Etsu Gin is a Japanese Gin distilled at the Asahikawa Distillery on Hokkaido and bottled at 43%.

Etsu was one of the first Japanese craft gins on the market, built on a secret recipe combining gyokuro green tea, sanshō pepper, bitter green orange peel, coriander, liquorice, angelica root, yuzu and Hokkaido-grown juniper.

The botanicals macerate for more than 24 hours in neutral sugarcane spirit before the gin is distilled in a traditional swan-neck copper still and diluted from 83% down to 43% with water from the Taisetsu Mountains.

The gin is then filtered through charcoal for extra purity, giving it its soft, round and floral character.

  • Black bottle of Drumshanbo Gunpowder Irish Gin with gold lettering
    Item no.: 05051-446

In the small village of Drumshanbo in western Ireland, PJ Rigney builds his gin around gunpowder green tea and botanicals sourced from nine countries. The result tastes as much of the Far East as it does of Irish soil.

    Expert's description

Drumshanbo Gunpowder Irish Gin is an Irish gin distilled on twelve botanicals and bottled at 43%.

The gin is made at The Shed Distillery in Drumshanbo, County Leitrim, the first new distillery to open in the Irish province of Connacht in over a hundred years. Founder PJ Rigney travelled the globe to source his botanicals, and eight of them are slow-distilled by hand in copper pot stills, while four more are added through vapour infusion.

The name Gunpowder refers to the green gunpowder tea, zhū chá, whose leaves are rolled into small pellets resembling grains of gunpowder. The tea is the gin's signature botanical and gives it an Asian twist that meets classic Irish ingredients like juniper and meadowsweet.

This 5cl miniature is an easy way to get to know a gin that was named the world's best gin by Flaviar in 2019.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Green tea and fresh citrus peel arrive first, followed by a lightly spiced note of coriander and a touch of meadowsweet.

    Palate

The gin opens softly with juniper and tea, before coriander seed and angelica root add a spicy lift that keeps the palate lively throughout.

    Finish

The finish is dry and slightly peppery, with a last trace of green tea tying the whole experience together.

  • Advent calendar with 25 miniature bottles of gin in gift box
    Item no.: 1222444-66555

Twenty-five doors, twenty-five distilleries, and no two of them alike. One holds dry juniper from a Welsh coastline, the next something spiced from the highlands of Vietnam. December turns into a route you drink your way along, one day at a time.

    The expert's description

Gin Advent Calendar - Gin Calendar filled with 25 different gins of 5 cl is an advent calendar holding 25 different gins in 5 cl miniature bottles at strengths between 40% and 45%.

The format is the whole point. 5 cl is a generous measure rather than a taster, so every door stretches to a proper Gin and Tonic with a garnish chosen for the bottle of the day. There is room to taste the gin neat first and then watch what the tonic does to it.

The spread is wide. Distilleries from Wales, Cornwall, Yorkshire, the Isle of Man, Orkney, Ireland, Denmark, the Czech Republic, Monaco, Tasmania and Vietnam all turn up. Some bottles are bone dry and juniper-led, others are outright Christmas releases built on baking spice, fig, apple, orange and cocoa. Several are special editions that do not sit on the shelf all year.

The running order stays a secret, but the full list of all 25 gins sits under the Description tab for anyone who cannot wait until 1 December. For corporate gifting the shop takes orders from six calendars upwards at ordre@whisky.dk.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Juniper runs through the lot, but rarely the same way two days running. Some doors smell sharply of citrus peel and fresh herbs, others of baked apple, dried fig and warm spice. One arrives with orange and cocoa.

    Palate

The range is broad. The dry gins are tight and peppery with juniper right at the front, while the winter releases are rounder and fuller, with fruit sweetness and a baking-spice floor. Strength moves between 40% and 45%, and the difference is easy to feel from one day to the next.

    Finish

From short and dry to long and spiced. The classics sign off cleanly on juniper and citrus, while the Christmas gins hang on with baking spice and orange peel.

The gin comes from Faer Isles Distillery in Vestmanna in the Faroe Islands, which alongside gin also makes akvavit, vodka and whisky. After testing eight local seaweed varieties, the distillery settled on thongweed, which they found matched the juniper best and gave the gin its salty, maritime edge.

The result is a classic, dry gin with a distinct North Atlantic character, where the rugged Faroese climate and landscape can be traced directly in the glass.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

A green, lightly peppery aroma meets a salty hint of seaweed and a fresh herbal note of dill.

    Palate

The palate is dry and green, with piney juniper as the base, while the seaweed adds an umami-like, salty layer.

    Finish

The finish is bright and refreshing, with a last trace of the sea.
