Cognac Glass

Cognac Glass

  • Hand-blown crystal cognac glass from Riedel with a narrow, closed bowl
    Item no.: 22227865489-2-4400-70

A single glass, hand-blown and light as a thought in the palm. Some glasses are made to drink from, others to teach you the scent of what you are about to drink. Sommeliers Cognac XO belongs to the second kind.

    Expert's Description

Riedel Sommeliers Cognac XO 4400/70 is a hand-blown cognac glass in crystal from the Austrian glass house Riedel, with a capacity of 170 ccm and a height of 165 mm.

Sommeliers was Riedel's first true glass series and the world's first collection designed around how individual wines and spirits behave in the glass. Behind the series stood Claus Josef Riedel, ninth generation of the glassblowing family, who began experimenting in the 1950s with how the shape of a bowl shifts the flavour on the tongue.

Unlike the machine-made Vinum glass, every Sommeliers glass is hand-blown by a glassblower, giving a thinner, lighter bowl and a more delicate rim. For XO cognac, the shape is smaller and more closed than the wide Vinum glass – precisely because an aged, concentrated cognac needs to be poured in smaller measures and kept close to the nose without becoming overwhelming.

The glass is built for the heavier, more complex cognac styles – XO, Napoléon and Hors d’Age – where long cask ageing has given the spirit enough depth that a concentrated glass draws it out rather than drowning it.

    Did You Know?

The Sommeliers series is considered the world's first glass collection where every single glass was designed for one specific wine or spirit rather than being all-purpose – an idea so new at the time that it founded an entirely new branch of the glass industry.

  • Two cut crystal cognac glasses from Riedel with a wide bowl and short stem
    Item no.: 22227865489-18-6416-18

Two cut crystal bowls, empty and quiet on the table, waiting for the evening the bottle comes out and the cork is pulled. A cognac glass is not meant to be looked at, it is meant to be used – that is the entire point of Riedel.

    Expert's Description

Riedel Vinum Cognac 6416/18 is a set of 2 cognac glasses in machine-made crystal from the Austrian glass house Riedel, with a bowl volume of 840 ccm and a height of 153 mm.

Riedel was founded as a glassworks in Bohemia in 1756, but it was ninth-generation heir Claus Josef Riedel who, in the middle of the 20th century, established something decisive: the shape of a glass, not only the quality of the spirit, determines how aroma and flavour are perceived. His son Georg Riedel carried that idea forward into the Vinum line, where each glass is designed for one specific grape or spirit type.

Vinum Cognac has a wide, round bowl that gives the cognac room to breathe, while the narrowed rim gathers the bouquet and carries it calmly toward the nose. The short stem makes the glass comfortable to hold, letting the warmth of the hand slowly coax the aromas open – much like an experienced taster cupping a glass between sniffs.

Wine critic Robert Parker put it as simply as it can be said about Riedel's glasses: "I cannot recommend using these glasses strongly enough." At Whisky.dk, Vinum Cognac is a natural companion to the cognac range, whether the bottle in question is a VS, a VSOP or an XO.

    Did You Know?

The Riedel family has made glass in Austria since 1756, but it was not until Claus Josef Riedel's research in the 1950s that the industry truly began designing glasses by grape and spirit type rather than by fashion – a habit that later earned the family the nickname "the professors of glass."
