Old Tom Gin

Old Tom Gin

Old Tom Gin is sweeter than, say, London Dry gin - Whisky.com sells a large selection of Old Tom gin from both Danish and foreign brands.
  • Bottle of Ableforth's Bathtub Old Tom Gin from England
    Item no.: 2222786539-1350

For those who find a classic dry gin too sharp, Ableforth's offers this gentler Old Tom expression, where orange's round sweetness takes the edge off the juniper.

    Expert's description

Bathtub Old Tom Gin Small Batch is an English Old Tom Gin from Ableforth's and bottled at 42.4%.

Like the rest of the brand's gins, this one is cold-compounded with botanicals rather than heat-distilled, with orange and juniper forming the core of the recipe.

The gentle sweetness makes it a fitting choice for those who prefer a sweeter style of Gin & Tonic, and a splash of lemon juice can freshen the drink further.

The Old Tom style is historically a bridge between sweet genever and dry London Dry Gin, and the Bathtub expression stays true to this gentler, more approachable tradition.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

The nose is gentle and citrus-filled with clear orange.

    Palate

The palate is round and lightly sweet with orange and a classic juniper base.

    Finish

The finish is gentle and refreshing.

  • Bottle of Hayman's Old Tom Gin from England
    Item no.: 2222786539-6097

In 18th-century England, distillation techniques were less refined, and gin makers added intensely flavoured botanicals such as liquorice to mask the rough base spirit, a style that was almost lost until Hayman's brought it back.

    Expert's description

Hayman's Old Tom Gin is an English Old Tom Gin, bottled at 41.4%.

The gin is a modern-day recreation of an original family recipe dating from the 1870s, launched in 2007 to meet demand during the cocktail renaissance.

The 10 botanicals emphasise juniper and two types of cinnamon, including coriander seed, lemon peel, orange peel, angelica root, cassia bark, orris root, licorice and nutmeg.

The style's characteristic sweetness, added during distillation, rounds out the sharpness of the juniper and recreates how gin was once enjoyed on the streets of Victorian England.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

The nose is lightly piney with sweet spices and floral aromas.

    Palate

The palate is soft and rounded with bold citrus and piney juniper character, where the sweetness tames the sharp edge of the juniper.

    Finish

The finish is lightly sweet and delicate, with a lingering but not intrusive floral hint.
