  • Benrinnes Murray McDavid Craft Cask Batch 2 Port Finish Single Highland Malt Whisky 44,5%.
    Item no.: 2227555-55474

At the foot of Ben Rinnes in Speyside sits a distillery that rarely gets top billing. Benrinnes mostly fills casks bound for blends, not bottles with its own name on the label. So when the spirit does step out on its own, it's worth paying attention.

    Expert description

Benrinnes Murray McDavid Craft Cask Batch 3 Madeira Finish is a Speyside Single Malt Whisky finished in Madeira casks and bottled at 44.5%.

The bottle belongs to Murray McDavid's Cask Craft series, where the independent bottler puts the cask itself in the spotlight rather than the age statement. This Benrinnes spirit has been moved into Madeira barriques from Justino's in Madeira, batch #MAD-03, letting the sweet, oxidative wine notes work their way into the whisky. There's no age statement on the label, and the whisky is bottled without chill filtration or added colouring, so what's in the glass is exactly what came out of the cask.

Benrinnes distillery mostly supplies spirit for blends such as Johnnie Walker and J&B, and official single malt releases from the distillery are few and far between. That makes this Madeira finish a rare chance to meet the distillery's character on its own, without sharing the stage with other malts in a blend.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Redcurrants and orange blossom arrive first, followed by honeyed cereal and a touch of stone fruit.

    Palate

Creamy caramel with a hint of honey, while sweet spice and ripe orange unfold as it opens up.

    Finish

Medium length, with vanilla, floral honey and a last trace of what the Madeira cask has given along the way.

Until 2007, Benrinnes used an unusual distillation method with six stills — two wash stills, two intermediate stills and two spirit stills — cooled by old-fashioned worm tubs rather than modern condensers. The method produced a heavier, more sulphury spirit, but was dropped in favour of conventional double distillation when the distillery was expanded.

  • Loch Lomond Grainstorm Peated Single Grain Scotch Whisky 70 cl 46%
    Item no.: 222278-6524775

On the banks of Loch Lomond, where Scotland's lowlands meet the highlands, sits a distillery that refuses to play by the rules. Here, peated malted barley runs through a column still instead of traditional copper pots — and the result is a whisky that behaves like neither malt nor grain, but insists on its own path.

    Expert's description

Loch Lomond Grainstorm Peated is a Highland Single Grain Scotch Whisky matured in bourbon casks and bottled at 46%.

The whisky is made exclusively from heavily peated malted barley, but because it's distilled in Loch Lomond Distillery's continuous column still rather than traditional pot stills, it's classified as single grain rather than single malt — a quirk that makes this bottle something of a genuine anomaly in Scotch production.

It's matured in a combination of first-fill and refill American oak bourbon casks under the eye of Master Blender Michael Henry, delivering a soft, fruity character with creamy vanilla and a whisper of smoke. The whisky sits in the distillery's permanent range and was relaunched under the Grainstorm name in late 2024.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Clove and blackcurrant sit alongside citrus peel and a touch of freshly cut grass, with vanilla running underneath as a sweet current throughout.

    Palate

Sweet, tangy peat meets green apple and lime citrus on the tongue, with aniseed in the mix. The smoke stays in the background here — more spice than bonfire.

    Finish

The finish is crisp and dry, with a distant trace of peat smoke lingering long after the last sip.

Not all whisky from Loch Lomond comes from traditional pot stills. Grainstorm is the distillery's answer to what happens when malted barley runs through a Coffey still – and the result is far fruitier than most expect from a grain whisky.

    Expert's Description

Loch Lomond Grainstorm is a Highland Single Grain Scotch Whisky matured in American oak and bottled at 46%.

The whisky is distilled entirely from malted barley on the distillery's continuous Coffey still, making it a single grain rather than a single malt, even though the grain is the same. Maturation takes place exclusively in American oak, which gives the whisky its bright, fruity and slightly sweet character.

  • Black Bottle 10 year old black bottle with gold label
    Item no.: 22227865397-13-2

An everyday dram does not have to be dull. This one has spent ten years in oak, and you hear it straight away: the smoke has gone tender, the caramel deep, and there are no sharp edges left.

    Expert description

Black Bottle 10 Years CVH is a Blended Scotch Whisky bottled at 40%.

The release is a limited follow-up to standard Black Bottle, with every component in the blend matured for at least ten years. Fruity grain whisky meets both peated and unpeated single malts, and as across the range it is the Islay component that sets the tone. The extra time in wood shows most clearly in the texture, which is oilier than in the young expression.

The producer's own notes for the ten year old point to smoked cherry wood, caramel and charred embers, and that is a fair description: the smoke has a sweet, woody edge rather than the medicinal peat associated with the southern Islay distilleries.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Caramelised sugar and smoked fruitwood, almost like a barbecue burning down. Behind it sit dried apricot and a brush of vanilla.

    Palate

Soft and full with toffee and malted grain, then the smoke rolls in as glowing ash and a nip of black pepper.

    Finish

Medium and lightly spiced. The smoke drops away slowly and leaves toasted malt and a dry, pleasant sweetness.

    Expert description

Ezra Brooks Port Cask Finish Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey is the brand's core expression finished in port casks, bottled at 49.5%. Ezra Brooks was founded in 1957 by Frank Silverman and was originally distilled at the Hoffman Distilling Company by two of Kentucky's most respected distilling families, first the Ripy family and later the Medley family. The brand changed hands several times over the years, most recently to Luxco in 2006, and since 2018 Ezra Brooks has been distilled at the family's own distillery, Lux Row Distillers, in Bardstown, Kentucky — known as the capital of bourbon.

  • West Cork Sherry Cask Maritime Release Irish Single Malt Whiskey bottle with orb-shaped design
    Item no.: 059555-7443

Off the coast of West Cork the Atlantic runs grey and restless, and it was here that two of the distillery's founders once hauled nets for a living, long before they swapped trawlers for copper pot stills. That same maritime spirit gives its name to the series this bottle belongs to.

    Expert Review

West Cork Sherry Cask Finished Maritime Release is an Irish Single Malt Whiskey matured in first fill Bourbon casks and finished in Bodegas Baron Sherry casks, bottled at 46%.

The bottle belongs to West Cork Distillers' Maritime Range, a series built as a tribute to the founders' years at sea. The whiskey is triple distilled from Irish malted barley and rests first in ex-Bourbon casks, picking up soft vanilla sweetness, before moving to Spanish Sherry casks for a finish that adds depth and dried fruit character.

The bottle itself is shaped like an old glass fishing float, the kind fishermen once used to keep their nets afloat, and the spout sits deliberately off-centre for a smoother pour. A small but deliberate design touch that ties the story to what is in the glass.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Stewed prunes and dried fig meet a touch of sherry and a soft vanilla sweetness that settles over everything.

    Palate

Sweet to start, with caramel and raisins, before spice steps in and pulls the flavour toward a peppery finish.

    Finish

Dry, with a lingering spiced edge, rounded off by soft oak.

Speyside has the most distilleries and the fewest extremes. This bottle does not try to be a particular house — it tries to be the region.

    Expert description

Clan Denny Speyside Edition Small Batch Release is a Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky bottled at 40%.

Douglas Laing married a small number of Speyside casks into one expression without disclosing the source. The region around the river Spey holds more than half of Scotland's working malt distilleries, and what they share is a style built on fruit, malt and soft sweetness rather than smoke. Small batch here means each release is limited and may vary slightly from one run to the next.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Apple compote, honey and pale malt. Behind them sit vanilla, dried apricot and a light floral note.

    Palate

Soft and malt-sweet. Pear, honey and pale caramel, with a touch of cinnamon from the oak. The mouthfeel is light and straightforward, without hard edges.

    Expert description

Clan Denny Highland Edition Small Batch Release is a Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky bottled at 40%.

Clan Denny is Douglas Laing's range of regional small batch releases, where a handful of casks from the same region are married into a single expression. The distillery is not disclosed, and that is the whole idea — you are buying a regional character rather than a name. Douglas Laing has worked as an independent bottling house in Glasgow since 1948, and the family still picks the casks themselves in the sample room.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Honey and ripe fruit first. Apple, pear and a touch of peach, over a warm cereal base and pale vanilla from the wood.

    Palate

Round and malty. Dried fruit, caramelised oak and a layer of spice with cinnamon and nutmeg under the sweetness. The texture is soft and lightly oily.

    Expert description

Clan Denny Islay Edition Small Batch Release is an Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky bottled at 40% without chill filtration and without added colouring.

Douglas Laing selected the casks as a portrait of Islay as a whole rather than of one particular house. The island has only a handful of working distilleries, and although the source is not disclosed the style is unmistakable: peat smoke, salt and a medicinal edge no other Scottish region delivers in quite the same way. Bottling without chill filtration and without colouring means both texture and colour are as the cask left them.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Peat smoke, sea breeze and a light medicinal note of iodine and seaweed. Under the smoke sit vanilla, honey and a touch of citrus.

    Palate

Round and silky with a clear balance between sweetness and smoke. Apple caramel, baked pear and candied orange meet salted liquorice, bonfire smoke and a hint of nuts. The oak provides a lightly spiced frame.

    Finish

Long and persistent with peat smoke, warm spice and a slowly fading sweetness that leaves salt sea air and dark chocolate.

    Expert description

Rebel Yell 100 Proof Oloroso Sherry Casks Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey is the brand's wheated bourbon finished in oloroso sherry casks, bottled at 50%. Rebel Yell was created in 1936 by Louisville's then-mayor Charles R. Farnsley to mark the 100th anniversary of the original Weller brand, with roots back to the Stitzel-Weller distillery of 1849. From the start, the brand used a wheated mash bill, giving it a softer, rounder character than a typical rye-based bourbon. After Stitzel-Weller closed in the early 1970s, the brand was acquired by Luxco, and since 2018 Rebel Yell has been distilled at the family's own distillery, Lux Row Distillers, in Bardstown, Kentucky.

    Expert Review

Silkie Whiskey Sliabh Liag The Midnight Irish Whiskey is a Blended Irish Whiskey, bottled at 46%.

Midnight Silkie is a rich, characterful blended Irish whiskey that differs from the other whiskeys in the series by having a higher proportion of peat-smoked malt whiskey, giving it a marked smoky profile, more pronounced than the other Silkie variants. It combines a smoky, lightly spiced flavour with classic Irish whiskey notes of sweetness and fruit. Midnight Silkie is inspired by the legendary silkie beings from Irish folklore – seals that could transform into beautiful humans – and seeks to capture the mystery and magic of Donegal's night sky and the wild landscapes around the distillery. Item no.: 053333-885

At Port Askaig on Islay's north-east coast, where the tidal current sweeps past whitewashed buildings and the Paps of Jura rise across the sound, stands a distillery that spent decades feeding Johnnie Walker's blends in near-anonymity. Here it appears under its own name, bottled by a young whisky house from Edinburgh.

    Expert's description

Caol Ila 8 Years Edinburgh Whisky Co The Discovery Collection is an Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky matured in refill hogsheads and bottled at 46.3% without chill filtration and with natural colour.

Caol Ila Distillery, founded in 1846 at Port Askaig, is Islay's largest distillery and a key supplier to Diageo's blends – primarily Johnnie Walker. Only a small share is bottled as single malt, giving each independent release a degree of rarity.

Edinburgh Whisky Co is a family-owned independent whisky house from Edinburgh that assembled the Discovery Collection to celebrate Scotland's whisky regions. The series covers Speyside, Highland and Islay, and is always bottled without artificial colour or chill filtration.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Sweet barbecue smoke meets fresh citrus and a touch of salt-laden sea air. A soft vanilla note from the cask lingers in the background.

    Palate

Creamy and round. Warm smoke integrated with fresh fruit notes and a light hint of honey. The balance holds throughout.

    Finish
