Loch Lomond Whisky

Loch Lomond Whisky

Over the course of Loch Lomond’s existence, the distillery has released seven different malts. Four of them were destined for blending, the remaining three were intended to be bottled as single malt whiskies, though most have been released as such over the years. Bottlings have been under the names: Inchmurrin, Inchmoan, Inchfad, Crotengea, Glen Douglass, Craiglodge and, naturally, Loch Lomond, each with varying peat levels. The name Loch Lomond is used for single malt releases though it is also used for a blended Scotch produced onsite using both grain and malt whisky.

Loch Lomond was in such a good position to release so many different whiskies as it had an unusual set up of stills. There were three sets of stills, two were fitted with rectification columns as well as five continuous stills. Loch Lomond sits in an industrial complex, once home to Britain’s earliest car factory. The distillery was built in 1965 by the Littlemill Distillery Company Ltd, under the ownership of Duncan Thomas and American Barton Brands. Production began a year later.

The distillery has a total yearly capacity of four million litres, though just 2.5 million litres of malt whisky are produced. However, the distillery turns out ten million litres of grain whisky per annum. The distillery closed in 1984 and it was acquired a year later by Glen Catrine Bonded Warehouse Ltd. In 1987, production began once more and six years later a Coffey Still was installed. The final pair of stills were installed in 1999, for two years prior, the distillery had experienced a devastating fire and as much as 300,000 litres of whisky was lost. Listen to our podcast:

    Item no.: 22227865413-8888

A refill cask from 2006 sat quietly maturing while the world outside changed. When it was finally tapped in 2016, it turned out to hold one of the most ash-laden, smoky expressions of Croftengea you can find.

The whisky was distilled in 2006 under Loch Lomond's heavily peated Croftengea profile and rested in a single refill cask until being bottled in 2016 by independent bottler Cooper's Choice. Only 725 bottles were filled from this one cask.

Croftengea is Loch Lomond's peated alter ego – the name the distillery uses when the smoke is allowed to run free. This release comes straight from a single cask and takes one last, colourful detour through a Jamaican rum barrel.

    Expert's Description

Croftengea 2016/2024 Jamaican Rum Cask is a Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky matured in American oak with a rum finish and bottled at 53%.

    Expert's Description

Inchmoan 12 Year Old is a Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky matured in oak casks and bottled at 46%.

The whisky is distilled from peated malt measured at around 50 ppm and represents the distillery's smoky, earthy style – softer and less medicinal than a typical Islay malt. After 12 years in cask the whisky is non-chill filtered, preserving its full, oily body.

Golf and whisky have shared a home for generations, and when The Open returns to Royal Portrush, Loch Lomond marks it with a bottle as colourful as the course's links. Created with golf legend Colin Montgomerie, it carries both sweetness and character.

    Expert's Description

The whisky was created in partnership with golf ambassador Colin Montgomerie to celebrate The 153rd Open at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland. After maturing in American oak, the whisky is given a final finish in Italian Chianti red wine casks, which lends it a signature fruitiness and a hint of red berries.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Red berries and sweet honey meet ripe peach and pear, with a light touch of red wine.

    Palate

Lively and fruity with more red berries, sweet honey and juicy pear, carried by the Chianti casks' soft tone.

25 years is a long time to wait for a bottle, and Murray McDavid spent the last three of them on something unusual: a cask that previously held Guyanese rum. The result is a single grain that tastes more of the Caribbean than of the Highlands.

    Expert's Description

    Nose

Exotic bouquet of pineapple, banana and mango, layered with vanilla, honey, sugarcane and a touch of oak and ginger.

A single cask is always a promise of something that will never come again. Loch Lomond 2008/2019 Single Cask 18/385-3 is the distillery's own single-cask series, where each cask stands alone and tells its own story from barrel to bottle.

    Expert's Description

Loch Lomond 2008/2019 Single Cask 18/385-3 is a Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky matured in an oak cask and bottled at 49.9%.

The whisky was distilled in 2008 and rested in a single, named cask until bottling in 2019, without being blended with any other casks. This makes it a pure, unfiltered representation of how Loch Lomond's spirit develops in that specific cask over 11 years of maturation.

    Tasting Notes

Some whisky exists to quench a thirst, and some whisky exists to be sat with, because it has something to say. Loch Lomond 21 Year Old belongs firmly in the second category – a mature, unhurried story from a distillery unafraid to do things its own way.

    Expert's Description

Loch Lomond 21 Year Old Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky is a Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky matured in American oak and bottled at 46%.

The whisky was launched alongside the distillery's major brand relaunch and is built from three different spirit styles from the distillery, two of which are peated. All three are matured separately in American oak casks before being married for up to three months in cask ahead of bottling. The whisky is neither chill-filtered nor coloured.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Apple and suet pastry give an impression of old-fashioned steamed pudding, growing thicker and sweeter over time with a hint of char.

    Palate

Sometimes a whisky is not just a celebration of a golf tournament, but also a story about the sea. Loch Lomond's 22 Year Old The Open Course Collection takes its final maturation in Spanish oak – a nod to a shipwreck that has rested off Portrush's coast since 1588.

    Expert's Description

Loch Lomond 22 Year Old The Open Course 2025 153rd Royal Portrush is a Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky matured in American oak with a Spanish oak finish and bottled at 46.7%.

The whisky was distilled in 2002 using spirit exclusively from the distillery's unique straight neck pot stills and matured for over 21 years in American oak before receiving a six-month finish in specially toasted virgin Spanish oak from the distillery's own cooperage. The Spanish oak is a tribute to the Spanish Armada ship La Girona, which sank off the coast of Portrush in 1588. Master Blender Michael Henry crafted this expression, with just 3,500 bottles available worldwide. The whisky is neither chill-filtered nor coloured.

On the banks of Scotland's most famous loch sits a distillery that isn't afraid to play with fire. Loch Lomond Steam & Fire comes from the same curiosity that drives the distillery's own on-site cooperage, where barrels aren't just aged but re-charred until they give the whisky something entirely its own.

    Expert's Description

Loch Lomond Steam & Fire is a Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky matured in American oak and bottled at 46%.

The whisky begins its life in a combination of first-fill bourbon barrels and American oak, before moving into casks that are heavily re-charred at the distillery's own cooperage – a process staff call "steam and fire". Ten months of finishing on these hard-charred casks gives the whisky its signature depth of toasted wood and burnt sugar, without ever losing Loch Lomond's fruity, light house style.

Before Inchmurrin, Inchmoan and Croftengea became household names, Loch Lomond's malt was simply called Old Rhosdhu. It was last produced around the year 2000, making every bottle today a small time capsule from the distillery's early years.

    Expert's Description

Old Rhosdhu 5 Year Old is a Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky matured in bourbon casks and bottled at 40%.

Old Rhosdhu was produced shortly after the distillery opened in 1966 and, until around the year 2000, was the name for Loch Lomond's then single malt style. The whisky reflects the distillery's set-up, designed for maximum reflux, giving it its characteristic fruity, floral style.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Floral and fruity with ripe apple, pear and a touch of malt.

    Palate

Soft and fruity with honey and light malt, underpinned by a delicate floral sweetness.

    Finish

Short to medium finish with lingering fruit and malt.

    Investment Potential

Medium – Old Rhosdhu was phased out as a standalone name around the year 2000, and bottles carrying this name are becoming increasingly hard to find, making them interesting to collectors of Loch Lomond's early history.

    Did You Know?

Old Rhosdhu was Loch Lomond's original single malt name, before the distillery began naming its various styles after the islands in the loch itself, as with Inchmurrin and Inchmoan.
