Some whiskies exist because a distillery can do something others simply can't. Loch Lomond Distiller's Choice is proof of that – a single grain made entirely from malted barley, run through a Coffey still few other distilleries even own.

    Expert's Description

Loch Lomond Distiller's Choice 2023 Coffey Still is a Highland Single Grain Scotch Whisky matured in bourbon casks and bottled at 48.8%.

Although made entirely from 100% malted barley, it is classed as single grain because it is distilled on the distillery's continuous Coffey still rather than traditional pot stills. Master Blender Michael Henry has selected whisky aged between 5 and 12 years and combined 70% first-fill with 30% second-fill bourbon casks. It is neither chill-filtered nor coloured.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Deep floral and fruit notes of rose and violet, alongside peach, pear and blackcurrant.

    Palate

Silky on the palate with tart fruits – blackberry and green apple – woven together with honey and malt.

    Finish

Long finish of vanilla fudge sweetness and warming cinnamon spice.

Frequently Asked Questions about Loch Lomond Distiller's Choice

Why is this called single grain when it's made only from barley?

Because it is distilled on a continuous Coffey still rather than a pot still – it's the distillation method, not the grain, that defines the single grain category.

    Is Distiller's Choice worth it?

Yes – it shows a side of Loch Lomond very few distilleries in Scotland can match, and Michael Henry's cask selection gives a complexity rarely found in single grain.

How does single grain compare to single malt?

Single grain is typically lighter and more floral, while single malt often has more body – Distiller's Choice sits at the floral, silky end.

Can this whisky be enjoyed neat?

Yes, it is made to be enjoyed neat or with a few drops of water, which opens up the floral notes.

    Is it a good gift?

Yes, the unusual Coffey still concept makes it a great conversation piece for a whisky enthusiast who thinks they've tried it all.

    What defines Loch Lomond distillery?

The distillery has its own set of still types, allowing it to make both malt and grain whisky at the same address.
