Not all whisky from Loch Lomond comes from traditional pot stills. Grainstorm is the distillery's answer to what happens when malted barley runs through a Coffey still – and the result is far fruitier than most expect from a grain whisky.

    Expert's Description

Loch Lomond Grainstorm is a Highland Single Grain Scotch Whisky matured in American oak and bottled at 46%.

The whisky is distilled entirely from malted barley on the distillery's continuous Coffey still, making it a single grain rather than a single malt, even though the grain is the same. Maturation takes place exclusively in American oak, which gives the whisky its bright, fruity and slightly sweet character.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Citrus peel and fresh applesauce meet vanilla and sweet spice, with a hint of freshly cut grass in the background.

    Palate

Sweet fruitiness with green apple and star anise, growing softer and more floral towards the finish.

    Finish

Short to medium finish with a fleeting hint of smoke.

Frequently Asked Questions about Loch Lomond Grainstorm

Why is Grainstorm called single grain when it's made from barley?

Because it is distilled on a continuous Coffey still rather than a pot still – it is the method, not the grain, that defines the category.

Is Grainstorm worth it as an everyday whisky?

Yes – the bright, fruity style and soft character make it a solid all-round whisky that delivers more complexity than many other grain whiskies in the same category.

Should Grainstorm be enjoyed neat or mixed?

Both work well – neat or on ice for everyday drinking, or as a base in a light highball.

What is the difference between Grainstorm and a Loch Lomond single malt?

Grainstorm is lighter and more floral, while the distillery's single malt expressions typically have more body and weight.

    Is Grainstorm good for beginners?

Yes, the bright, accessible style makes it a good place to start exploring grain whisky.

What defines Loch Lomond as a distillery?

The distillery produces both malt and grain whisky on the same site thanks to its unique set-up of several different still types.
