No distillery is named on the label, and that is not an oversight. Douglas Laing has gathered the Highlands into one bottle and let the region speak instead of the name.

    Expert description

Clan Denny Highland Edition Small Batch Release is a Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky bottled at 40%.

Clan Denny is Douglas Laing's range of regional small batch releases, where a handful of casks from the same region are married into a single expression. The distillery is not disclosed, and that is the whole idea — you are buying a regional character rather than a name. Douglas Laing has worked as an independent bottling house in Glasgow since 1948, and the family still picks the casks themselves in the sample room.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Honey and ripe fruit first. Apple, pear and a touch of peach, over a warm cereal base and pale vanilla from the wood.

    Palate

Round and malty. Dried fruit, caramelised oak and a layer of spice with cinnamon and nutmeg under the sweetness. The texture is soft and lightly oily.

    Finish

Long and fruity, with cereal, toasted nuts and dark honey fading into a lightly dry close.

    Did you know?

The Clan Denny name comes from Douglas Laing's old Denny range, originally reserved for single grain whisky from closed distilleries. Today the name also covers regional malts, but the principle is unchanged: the casks speak, not the label.

Frequently asked questions about Clan Denny Highland Edition

Why is no distillery named on the bottle?

Because the release is built as a regional expression rather than a distillery portrait. Douglas Laing either has no permission to name the source, or casks from several houses are married together. You get the Highland character, not a specific name.

    What does small batch mean?

That only a small number of casks were married for the bottling. It gives more consistency than a single cask but far less volume than an industrial blend, and each batch tastes slightly different.

    Is it peated?

No. The Highland edition is built on honey, fruit and malt. If you want peat smoke, look to the Islay edition in the same range or to our selection of Islay Whisky.

Is it a good way to learn the regions?

Yes, that is really the point of the range. Line the three regional editions up side by side and the difference between Highlands, Speyside and Islay becomes very clear, even to a beginner.

    How is it best enjoyed?

Neat in a tulip glass at room temperature. At 40% there is not much room to spare, so leave the water out and let it rest a couple of minutes before tasting instead.

    Who are Douglas Laing?

A family owned Scottish bottling house from Glasgow, founded in 1948. They buy casks from distilleries across Scotland and are behind ranges such as Old Particular, Provenance and the Remarkable Regional Malts.
