Douglas Laing Whisky

Douglas Laing is one of the last true family-run whisky merchants in Scotland, faithful to the philosophy that whisky should be shown pure and unfiltered, exactly as the distillery made it. For over 75 years the family has hunted down casks that genuinely speak of their origin.
  • BenRiach 2008 Old Particular 10 years Douglas Laing Single Speyside Malt Whisky
    Item no.: 22227865449-8100

Three hundred and seventy bottles for the whole world. That is what a refill hogshead gives when it is emptied, and it is also the entire reason the Old Particular series exists. Douglas Laing does not marry casks here, they let them stand alone.

    The expert's description

BenRiach 2008/2018 Old Particular 10 years is a Single Speyside Malt Whisky matured in a refill hogshead, cask no. DL12939, and bottled at 48.4 % without chill filtration and without added colour.

Old Particular is the Douglas Laing range for single casks, where each bottling carries its own cask number and its own outturn. This cask was filled in December 2008 and emptied in December 2018, exactly ten years later, and gave 370 bottles.

A refill hogshead gives up its influence slowly, and that is a deliberate choice with a ten year old whisky. The cask is not meant to take over but to let the malty, lightly honeyed core of BenRiach stand out clearly, and the bottling strength of 48.4 % keeps the texture intact.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Pale cereal, honey and green apple with a note of vanilla from the cask.

    Palate

Clean and malty with honeyed sweetness, citrus peel and a light peppery edge. The cask stays in the background the whole way.

    Finish

Medium and dry with malt, oak and a last touch of warmth.

    Flavour profile

Malty · Honeyed · Fresh · Dry · Lightly spiced

    Investment potential

Medium. A single cask of 370 bottles cannot be recreated, and Old Particular has a steady following among collectors. BenRiach predating the 2016 change of ownership is also spirit that grows harder to find in independent bottlings.

Douglas Laing puts DL in front of every cask number so the cask can be traced back through the house archive. The system makes it possible to establish exactly when a cask was bought and what has happened to it since.

  • Big Peat 12 year old Douglas Laing Islay Blended Malt Whisky bottle
    Item no.: 22227865479-1106-197280067

Big Peat is not a distillery but a fisherman with a wild grey beard and four Islay distilleries behind him. The twelve year old is the one where he has picked up some manners — the smoke is still there, but the edges have softened.

    The expert's description

Big Peat 12 years is an Islay Blended Malt Scotch Whisky bottled at 46 % without chill filtration and without added colour.

The blend consists solely of single malts from Islay, all at least twelve years old: Caol Ila contributes sweetness, Bowmore balance, Ardbeg the medicinal and earthy character, and Port Ellen a measure of elegance.

Douglas Laing created Big Peat in 2009 as a single-bottle account of Islay. The firm was founded in 1948 by Fred Douglas Laing and is still run by the family from Glasgow, where they now also operate their own distillery.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Charred oak, chimney smoke and wet rock pools. Under the smoke sit vanilla, butterscotch and dark fruits such as blackcurrant and black cherry.

    Palate

Fruit driven with toffee, dark chocolate and a nutty edge. The spiced peat smoke settles around the sweetness instead of fighting it, and the salt of the coast is obvious.

    Finish

Long and lingering with brown sugar, bonfire ash and a dry phenolic quality that stays.

  • Big Peat 15th Anniversary Limited Edition Islay Blended Malt Whisky
    Item no.: 059555-9999

Fifteen years of the grey bearded fisherman on the label called for a celebration, and Douglas Laing chose red wine casks for the occasion. Smoke and red wine is a risky pairing — it works when the casks are hand selected.

    The expert's description

Big Peat 15th Anniversary Limited Edition is an Islay Blended Malt Scotch Whisky finished in hand-selected red wine casks and bottled at 50 %.

The release marks Big Peat's fifteenth anniversary and consists, as always, solely of single malts from Islay. It is neither chill filtered nor coloured and arrives in a specially designed gift box containing fifteen facts about Big Peat, Islay and the whisky itself.

For the occasion Douglas Laing's blender assembled the finest Islay single malts and matured the greater part in hand-selected red wine casks. The result is a darker and more fruit driven Big Peat than the standard release.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Bonfire smoke and dried seaweed meet dark berries, plum and a lightly tart wine note. A sweet edge of cane sugar sits under the smoke.

    Palate

Powerful and round with blackberry, dark chocolate and salted liquorice. The red wine casks give a tannin edge that tightens the whisky halfway through, and the 50 % provides good drive.

    Finish

Long with ash, dark berries and a dry, lightly bitter close.

  • Big Peat 25 year old Gold Edition Vintage 1992 Islay Blended Malt Whisky
    Item no.: 22227865468-289

The first chapter of a trilogy that began with a question: what happens to Islay smoke when it is left for a quarter of a century? The answer is not less smoke — it is smoke with manners.

    The expert's description

Big Peat 25 years Vintage 1992 Gold Edition is an Islay Blended Malt Scotch Whisky bottled at 52.1 % cask strength.

The whiskies were distilled in 1992 and bottled in 2017 in an outturn of 3,000 bottles. The release is neither chill filtered nor coloured and is the first of three in Douglas Laing's Vintage Series.

The Gold Edition opened a trilogy that continued with the Platinum Edition at 26 years and The Black Edition at 27 years. All three come from the same 1992 vintage and are built from some of Islay's most sought after single malts.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Complex and nuanced. Smoke meets caramel and vanilla, with dried fruit, sea salt and a light medicinal tone behind.

    Palate

Full and oily. Powerful peat smoke up front, balanced by honey and burnt sugar, followed by dark chocolate, leather and spice.

    Finish

Long and warm, with peat and sweetness fading slowly. An elegant dryness of oak and nuts closes it.

The second chapter. Same 1992 vintage, one year longer in wood and a touch less strength. The Platinum Edition is the middle of the three — and the one where the balance between smoke and maturity sits closest.

    The expert's description

Big Peat 26 years Vintage 1992 Platinum Edition is an Islay Blended Malt Scotch Whisky bottled at 51.5 % cask strength.

The whiskies were distilled in 1992 and bottled in 2018 in an outturn of 3,000 bottles. The release is neither chill filtered nor coloured.

The Platinum Edition is the second in Douglas Laing's Vintage Series, between the Gold Edition at 25 years and The Black Edition at 27 years. All three are assembled from Islay's most sought after single malts of the same vintage.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Dry ash, seaweed and salted liquorice. Beneath the smoke hide dried apricots, honey and a warm nuttiness.

    Palate

Rich and broad with peat smoke, dark caramel and roasted malt. There is a mineral salt edge and a hint of leather that only comes with age.

    Finish

Very long with dry smoke, cocoa and a sweet note that holds on for some time.

The final chapter. After twenty-seven years the peat has become something else — barbecued meat, coal dust and rock salt, as Douglas Laing themselves described it when the bottle was let loose in 2019.

    The expert's description

Big Peat 27 years Vintage 1992 The Black Edition is an Islay Blended Malt Scotch Whisky bottled at 48.3 %.

The whiskies were distilled in 1992 and bottled in 2019 in an outturn of 3,000 bottles, without chill filtration and without added colour. It is the closing release in the Vintage Series trilogy.

The series began with the Gold Edition at 25 years in 2017 and continued with the Platinum Edition at 26 years in 2018. The Black Edition closes the row and is at once the oldest and the most restrained of the three in strength.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Coal dust, barbecued meat and rock salt. Beneath the heavy smoke lie dried figs, coffee and a hint of old oak.

    Palate

Deep and broad with ash, black pepper and salted caramel. The 48.3 % makes it softer than its two predecessors, and the texture is clearly oily.

    Finish

Very long and dry with smoke, cocoa beans and a mineral salt edge.

    Item no.: 2222786546-300

Thirty-three years. The whisky in this bottle was distilled while Port Ellen had only recently fallen silent, and it has rested in wood longer than most whisky enthusiasts have been interested in whisky.

    The expert's description

Big Peat 33 years Vintage 1985 Limited Edition is an Islay Blended Malt Scotch Whisky finished in cognac and sherry casks and bottled at 47.2 %.

The individual distillates were made in 1985 and bottled 33 years later in 2018 in an outturn of 1,500 bottles. Of those, 15 bottles came exclusively to Denmark through Whisky.dk.

Douglas Laing added the release to the Big Peat range as an old and rare expression, where the combination of cognac and sherry casks lays a layer of dark fruit and sweetness over the mature Islay smoke.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Old oak, dried plums and the sweet fruit of cognac. The smoke sits deep down as cold ash and wet seaweed.

    Palate

Soft, broad and oily with raisin, dark chocolate and salted caramel. The peat is tempered by the years and works as a dry undercurrent rather than as the lead.

    Finish

Very long with dried fruit, tobacco and a last breath of ash.

Cognac casks are rarely used for peated whisky, because the delicate grape sweetness is easily run over by peat. After 33 years the smoke has quietened enough for the two finally to meet.

    Item no.: 22227865468-241

Douglas Laing's Christmas release has never been the soft, cosy type. It is the one that comes in from the cold in a wet coat smelling of bonfire — the 2016 edition in particular.

    The expert's description

Big Peat Christmas Edition 2016 is an Islay Blended Malt Scotch Whisky bottled at 54.6 % cask strength.

The blend consists solely of single malts from Islay, and the Christmas release is traditionally bottled stronger than the standard version. The whisky is neither chill filtered nor coloured.

The Christmas Edition has been a fixed annual event at Douglas Laing since Big Peat was launched in 2009. Every edition has its own strength and its own composition, and they are bottled only in the year they are named after.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Dried seaweed, bonfire smoke and ash with a pronounced medicinal note. Sweet malt, vanilla and a touch of spice keep it from turning cold, and a freshness of citrus and pepper lifts it.

    Palate

Powerful and warm with clear peat smoke, salty sea air and a marked ash profile. Black pepper, liquorice, toasted barley and a hint of caramel step forward, and the 54.6 % is well integrated.

    Finish

Long, dry and smoky with persistent ash, pepper and a salty minerality.

Half a percentage point below the year before, but an entirely different mood in the glass. The 2017 edition has more sea and less bonfire — a Christmas dram for anyone who would rather stand on the pier than sit by the fire.

    The expert's description

Big Peat Christmas Edition 2017 is an Islay Blended Malt Scotch Whisky bottled at 54.1 % cask strength.

The blend is assembled from single malts from Ardbeg, Caol Ila, Bowmore and Port Ellen and bottled as a small batch without chill filtration and without added colour.

In the Christmas editions Douglas Laing emphasise the maritime side of Islay, and the 2017 vintage is a clear example: salt, seaweed and cold sea air take up more room than the dry ash.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Salt and bitter peat with heavy smoke, yet bright enough for citrus to break through. Seaweed and wet stone sit beneath it all.

    Palate

Peat from the first drop, with shifting layers of oil and salt turning into light vanilla and spice. There is a clear sea flavour, put there on purpose.

    The expert's description

Big Peat Christmas Edition 2021 is an Islay Blended Malt Scotch Whisky bottled at 52.8 % cask strength.

It is the eleventh edition in Douglas Laing's Christmas series, assembled from single malts from Ardbeg, Caol Ila, Bowmore and Port Ellen. The whisky is neither chill filtered nor coloured.

The Christmas release is bottled every year at cask strength and with its own composition, and the 2021 vintage is among the paler in colour — a sign that bourbon leaning casks dominate the vatting.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

    The expert's description

Big Peat Christmas Edition 2023 is an Islay Blended Malt Scotch Whisky finished in sherry casks and bottled at 54.8 % cask strength.

It is the first time in the history of the Christmas series that Big Peat has been given a sherry finish. The blend is assembled from single malts from Ardbeg, Bowmore, Caol Ila and Port Ellen, and the whisky is neither chill filtered nor coloured.

Douglas Laing have bottled a Christmas Edition every year since 2011, always at cask strength and always with its own composition. The 2023 vintage stands out through its cask programme rather than through its strength.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Raisin and dark syrup meet bonfire smoke and dried seaweed. A warm spice edge of clove and cinnamon fits December neatly.

    Palate

Powerful and sweet with dried fruit, dark chocolate and salted liquorice. The sherry gives body, and the 54.8 % keeps the smoke forward so it never turns cloying.

Big Peat Winter Edition Madeira Cask Douglas Laing Islay Blended Malt Scotch Whisky 53.6%

Big Peat Winter Edition Madeira Cask 53.6% is a powerful and characterful Islay blended malt, crafted by Douglas Laing as a seasonal release with a vinous twist.

This winter edition is composed exclusively of single malts from Islay – including Caol Ila, Bowmore, Ardbeg, and rare drops from Port Ellen – and is finished in casks that previously held sweet Madeira wine. The combination of maritime Islay notes and fruity wine maturation creates a complex and warming whisky, ideal for colder months.

The nose opens with sweet malt and salty sea air, followed by notes of salted caramel, vanilla, and dense peat smoke. The palate is robust and full-bodied with molasses, crème brûlée, bitter orange peel, and a distinct phenolic depth. The Madeira cask adds a subtle fruity sweetness that balances the intense smoke. The finish is long, intense, and smoky with citrus and spicy oak.

The whisky is bottled at natural cask strength of 53.6%, non-chill filtered and with no added colour. Big Peat Winter Edition Madeira Cask is an expressive dram with both edge and finesse – a perfect choice for collectors and peat lovers seeking something special for the winter season.

  • Bunnahabhain bottle from the Douglas Laing Old Particular series
    Item no.: 059763-615-920

For three generations, Douglas Laing has had a soft spot for the quiet and the rare, and this 18 Years Old Bunnahabhain from the Old Particular range shows exactly why.

    Expert's Description

Bunnahabhain 2004/2023 Old Particular 18 Years Old is an Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky from a single ex-bourbon cask, bottled at 52%.

The whisky was distilled in December 2004 and left to rest on its bourbon cask right up until July 2023, when Douglas Laing bottled it as part of their well-regarded Old Particular series – a range that has stood for unadorned single cask bottlings since 1948.

Eighteen years on a refill bourbon cask gives the whisky room to breathe without being overwhelmed by the oak, and the result is a clear, age-stated Bunnahabhain that still lets the distillery's core character speak for itself.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Vanilla and light honey surround a fresh hint of sea salt and ripe pears.

    Palate

Soft and round with sweet bourbon cask, apple and a gentle spiciness that grows warmer as it lingers.

    Finish

Medium length, dry and lightly salty with a final touch of vanilla.

    Item no.: 22227865479-1106-1972492

Harmony is the name on the bottle, and it is not far off. Twenty-eight years have made this grain whisky calm and balanced without costing it the natural sweetness it started with.

    Expert description

Cameronbridge Spiritualist Harmony 1991/2020 Old Particular 28 Years is a Single Grain Scotch Whisky bottled at 52.6% without chill filtration and without added colour.

The whisky was distilled in October 1991 and bottled in August 2020 from a single cask that gave 297 bottles for the entire world. Old Particular is Douglas Laing's series for single casks, and The Spiritualist is a sub-range where each bottle receives its own name.

Cameronbridge in Fife is Europe's largest grain distillery and has been producing since 1824. The spirit is light and smooth, and after nearly three decades in cask it has developed the creamy depth old grain whisky is known for.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Vanilla and pale caramel with ripe pear, coconut and a stroke of light grain.

    Palate

Natural sweetness balanced by a spiced edge. Fudge, honey and citrus peel with a soft, oily texture.

    Item no.: 22233355-55664

Douglas Laing does not just select casks — it also selects who may sell them. Emporium Exclusive goes only to a handful of shops, and Whisky.dk is one of them.

    Expert description

Craigellachie 16 years Emporium Exclusive is a Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky bottled by Douglas Laing at 51.4% without chill filtration.

The cask gave 210 bottles and belongs to the Old Particular range, in which Douglas Laing bottles single casks from distilleries across Scotland. The Emporium Exclusive line is distributed through a small, carefully chosen group of specialist retailers. Craigellachie condenses in worm tubs and therefore makes a heavier, meatier spirit than the rest of Speyside — sixteen years in cask gives it time to unfold without losing the edge.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Aromatic spices first, then liquorice, dark sweetness and a light herbal note. Behind them sit vanilla fudge and a touch of tropical fruit.

    Palate

Powerful and layered. Spice, liquorice and malt meet vanilla fudge and a creamy sweetness that softens the intensity. The sulphurous distillery edge runs beneath as a mineral undercurrent.

    Finish

Long and spiced, with liquorice, oak and a dry warmth that lingers.

    Item no.: 22227865479-1106-197279873

Dailuaine has supplied malt to other people's blends for over a century without getting its name on the bottle. Douglas Laing put it there — and packed the whisky in a ceramic decanter.

    Expert description

Dailuaine 10 years Douglas Laing Premier Barrel is a Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky matured in sherry wood and bottled at 46% without chill filtration and without added colouring.

The release gave 602 bottles and belongs to the Premier Barrel range, in which Douglas Laing bottles single casks in ceramic decanters rather than glass. Dailuaine sits at Carron in Speyside and has since 1852 supplied a heavy, sherry-friendly malt that has almost entirely ended up in blends. Official bottlings are rare, which is why independent bottlers are the ones keeping the distillery name on the shelves.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Dark and round. Raisin, dark chocolate and orange peel, with a warm spiced note and a trace of nuts.

    Palate

Full and malty. Dried fruit, cocoa and a lightly tart sherry edge, with cereal and a warm spiced middle. The 46% carries the sweetness without making it heavy.

    Finish

Medium and dry, with nuts, malt and a faintly bitter cocoa note.

  • Douglas Laing Remarkable Regional Malts miniature set with six whisky bottles
    Item no.: 22227865479-1106-197280096

Six small bottles, six Scottish regions. This is about as close to a tour of Scotland as you can get without leaving the kitchen table, and Douglas Laing has packed it into a box worth leaving out on display.

    The expert description

Douglas Laing Remarkable Regional Malts is a set of six Blended Malt Scotch Whisky in 5 cl bottles, bottled between 46% and 46.8%.

The range is Douglas Laing’s attempt to translate the geography of Scottish whisky into six bottles. Each release draws malt from a single area, so the difference between a Lowland and an Islay becomes something you taste your way towards rather than read about. All six are bottled at a minimum of 46% and without chill filtration.

The set holds The Epicurean from the Lowlands at 46.2%, Timorous Beastie from the Highlands at 46.8%, Scallywag from Speyside at 46%, The Gauldrons from Campbeltown at 46.2%, Rock Island from the Islands at 46.8% and Big Peat from Islay at 46%.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

The range is the entire point. From the bright citrus and cut grass of The Epicurean, through the sherry sweetness of Scallywag, to the tar, smoked ham and sea salt of Big Peat.

    Palate

Timorous Beastie gives honey and heather, The Gauldrons salted caramel and apple, Rock Island a soft smoke with seaweed underneath. Tasted side by side, regional character stops being an abstraction.

    Finish

Short and clean at the pale end, long and sooty at the smoky one. Order matters here. Begin with Big Peat and the rest of the evening tastes of peat.

    Item no.: 059763-615-679

Fifty-five percent of Glengoyne own range sits in sherry casks. Here Hunter Laing has done the opposite and left one refill butt alone for sixteen years.

    The expert's description

Glengoyne 2007/2023 Old Malt Cask is a Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky from a single refill butt, bottled at 50%.

The whisky was distilled in June 2007 and bottled in October 2023 after sixteen years. The cask gave 677 bottles, which is a lot for a single cask — a butt holds around 500 litres against half that for a hogshead.

Old Malt Cask is the oldest range from Hunter Laing and is always bottled at 50%. The whisky is non-chill filtered and of natural colour, so the strength is the only thing adjusted.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Malt, apple and light caramel with a dry nutty note. The refill cask has let the spirit stand forward.

    Palate

Dry and malty with green apples, nuts and a hint of honey. The 50% gives bite, but the whisky is still bright in its expression.

    Finish

Long and dry with malt, nuts and peppery oak.

  • Rock Oyster Douglas Laing
    Item no.: 22227865468-220

Rock Oyster from Douglas Laing is an Island Blended Malt Scotch Whisky bottled at 46%, created as a tribute to the rugged, wind‑swept whisky islands of the Scottish archipelago. It brings together malt whisky from Orkney, Arran, Jura and Islay in a single expression where maritime notes, gentle smoke and sweet malt weave into a distinctly coastal profile. The whisky is bottled without chill filtration and without added colour, allowing it to appear as natural and unaltered as possible.

Rock Oyster is part of Douglas Laing’s series of regionally inspired blended malts, each designed to capture the essence of a specific Scottish whisky region. The Island edition focuses on the influence of the sea, the salty air, the peat smoke and the robust malt character that define the island distilleries. The combination of whiskies from several islands creates a complexity that is both raw and harmonious, clearly reflecting the nature and climate of the region.

The aroma opens with a fresh breeze of sea spray and salty kelp, followed by citrus, pepper and a subtle smoke reminiscent of embers from a beach fire. Beneath the maritime layers lies a gentle malt sweetness that adds balance and depth.

The palate is full and lively. It begins with sweet malt and salted caramel, then a light peat smoke spreads across the tongue, giving the whisky its characteristic island signature. Notes of warming spice, fresh citrus and a touch of vanilla from the casks appear. The texture is soft yet marked by a mineral edge that enhances the maritime expression.

The finish is long, salty and lightly smoky. It leaves impressions of sea air, spice and a mild sweetness that rounds off the experience without shifting focus from the whisky’s coastal character.

Rock Oyster is ideal for those who enjoy the maritime style but prefer a more approachable and balanced smoke profile than the heaviest Islay expressions. It works both as an introduction to island whisky and as a complex dram for experienced enthusiasts. The interplay of freshness, smoke, salt and sweetness makes it versatile for relaxed sipping as well as deeper tasting.

About Douglas Laing Whisky

Douglas Laing & Co. is one of Scotland's few remaining family-owned whisky merchant firms, known for chasing substance over show. The company bottles everything from rare single cask releases to the beloved regional blended malts in the Remarkable Regional Malts series, and what unites it all is the principle of no chill filtration and no added colour, so the whisky stays true to its origin. For collectors, the Old Particular series with its scarce single-cask releases from rare distilleries is a constant draw, while beginners often find their way in through the more accessible Big Peat or Scallywag.

History & background

The company was founded in 1948 by Fred Douglas Laing and is today run by the third generation, Fred Jr. and his daughter Cara Laing (now Leggat). Over more than 75 years the family has built its reputation by sticking to the same core philosophy: delivering the most special, quality-driven Scotch whisky experience, often sourced from small, overlooked parcels of single malt and single grain. The family's third generation has continued the tradition of personally selected casks while expanding the business internationally.

Production & style

Douglas Laing doesn't distil itself but selects and matures casks from distilleries across Scotland, deliberately skipping chill filtration and added colour to preserve the most natural flavour profile. The regional series, Remarkable Regional Malts, deliberately blends whisky from several distilleries within the same region to capture that region's character, while Old Particular sticks to single casks.

Signature style

Unfiltered, Regional, Authentic
From Big Peat's smoky Islay character to Scallywag's soft Speyside sweetness, each series reflects its region's natural expression.
