About Timorous Beastie Whisky

The name Timorous Beastie is a tribute to Robert Burns' famous Scots poem 'To a Mouse'. Douglas Laing puts it themselves: 'The original Timorous Beastie... was a timid, little field mouse. Echoing our national bard's wit, ours is most certainly not for the fainthearted.' For the newcomer it's a powerful yet well-balanced blended malt with a fun literary twist; for the connoisseur, Douglas Laing is a respected independent bottler, known for assembling blended malts with distinct, pronounced character rather than the more uniform style often found in the big conglomerates' blends.

History & Background

Douglas Laing & Co. was founded in Glasgow in 1948 by Fred Douglas Laing and has since grown into one of Scotland's most respected independent bottlers, today run by the third generation of the family. The Timorous Beastie range is one of the house's best-known blended malts, taking its name and attitude directly from Robert Burns' 1785 poem, in which a farmer accidentally destroys a field mouse's winter nest. Douglas Laing has deliberately flipped the poem's timid theme on its head by creating a whisky that is anything but shy.
