Hunter Laing Whisky

For three generations, Hunter Laing has bottled some of the finest whisky Scotland has to offer – without owning a single cask to start with. Today the family has also become distillers in their own right.
  • Bowmore The Kinship No 1 Feis Ile 27 Year Hunter Laing Islay Single Malt Whisky
    Item no.: 22353668-889

27 years in sherry. 366 bottles. Released at Feis Ile — Islay's biggest whisky festival. Hunter Laing's The Kinship No. 1 is the kind of bottle you open and remember precisely when and with whom.

    Expert's description

Bowmore The Kinship No 1 Feis Ile 27 Year is an Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky matured in a sherry cask and bottled at 48.1%. Hunter Laing's The Kinship series is created as a tribute to Islay's distilleries and the traditions that have shaped the island's whisky. Each bottling is selected cask by cask and released in small quantities, focusing on maturity, character and provenance. The Kinship No. 1 is the first in the series — a 27-year-old Bowmore bottled specifically for Feis Ile 2017, the annual whisky festival on Islay. Selected by Jim McEwan, Islay's veteran spirit who came out of retirement as production director for Ardnahoe. Non-chill filtered, natural colour — 366 bottles at 48.1%.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Complex and aged. Dark fruit, sherry sweetness and dried flowers with a hint of sea breeze and gentle, elegant smoke from Bowmore's characteristic peat.

    Taste

Silky and deep. The sherry cask dominates with fig, dried plum and dark chocolate. The peat whispers in the background — present but transformed by 27 years of maturation.

    Finish

Very long and luxurious. Dried fruit, warm spice and a delicate coastal smoke that slowly fades. Exceptional length for this age and ABV.

  • Bottle of Bruichladdich 18 Year Old The Kinship 2023 from Hunter Laing
    Item no.: 222555-45539

On Islay, they say some casks simply wait for the right moment. This is one of them — 18 years in the dark, ready to be celebrated alongside the island's biggest news.

    Expert description

Bruichladdich 18 Year Old The Kinship 2023 is an Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky from Hunter Laing, matured in a single cask and bottled at cask strength, 61.5%.

The whisky is part of Hunter Laing's Kinship series, which in 2023 arrived at its seventh and final edition. The series was created to mark the opening of Hunter Laing's own distillery, Ardnahoe, on Islay, and the name Kinship refers to the closeness Ardnahoe shares with the island's other distilleries. The Bruichladdich bottling is the youngest in the closing edition, which otherwise spans whiskies as old as 33 years from names like Bowmore and Bunnahabhain.

The whisky comes from a single cask and is bottled at its natural cask strength, with no colouring or chill filtration. Only 245 bottles were drawn from this particular cask, making it one of the rarer releases in Hunter Laing's Islay portfolio.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Black pepper and caramel, combined with a hint of macerated red berries. A richness runs through it all, hinting at the long maturation.

    Palate

Baked apples, nutmeg and a distinct hint of French oak. The cask strength gives a solid bite, but never overpowers the fruit.

    Finish

Long and spiced, with a lingering oak warmth that lingers on the palate long after the last sip.

Medium — this is the final edition in a now-completed and sought-after series from Hunter Laing, with only 245 bottles from a single cask bottled at cask strength. Being the youngest and most accessible bottling in the Kinship series, however, interest is somewhat more muted than for the series' older releases.

    Did you know?

The Kinship series was created to celebrate Hunter Laing finally opening its own distillery, Ardnahoe, after decades as a pure independent bottler. Ardnahoe sits on Islay's north-east coast, overlooking the very distilleries many of the series' bottles come from.

    Item no.: 222555-45538

Thirty-three years is a long time to sit still in a cask, and when Hunter Laing finally bottles it, they do so with the reverence the age deserves.

    Expert's Description

Bunnahabhain 33 Years Old The Kinship 2023 is a Single Islay Malt Whisky from a refill bourbon hogshead, bottled at natural cask strength, 48.8%.

The Kinship is Hunter Laing's prestigious series, honouring the Scotch whisky community and the regions that have made the country famous for its whisky. This 33 Years Old Bunnahabhain is bottled from a single cask in 2023, yielding just 292 bottles worldwide.

The long maturation shows Bunnahabhain's ability to craft rich, refined whisky without smoke, where the distillery's clean house style and coastal setting come through beautifully. The nose offers tropical fruits like pineapple and lime, joined by red cherries and a faint floral note.

On the palate the whisky unfolds with a fine balance between freshness and depth – the fruity notes continue with juicy citrus and ripe berries, while Bunnahabhain's signature maritime tones show through with a touch of sea salt.

    Tasting Notes

  • Caol Ila 2010 2023 Old Malt Cask 13 Years Hunter Laing Oloroso Sherry Butt bottle
    Item no.: 059763-615-677

Caol Ila's peat smoke and the dried-fruit sweetness of a sherry butt pull in different directions – but they find each other. Hunter Laing selected this Oloroso sherry butt for the Old Malt Cask series, and after 13 years the result shows exactly what a well-matched cask marriage can produce.

    Expert's description

Caol Ila 2010/2023 Old Malt Cask 13 Years is an Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky matured in a single Oloroso sherry butt, bottled at 50% without chill filtration and with natural colour.

Hunter Laing & Co. is one of Scotland's most respected independent whisky families, with roots in Glasgow since 1949. Old Malt Cask is the company's classic series – single casks, natural colour, always at 50%. This cask yielded 769 bottles, distilled in August 2010 and bottled in October 2023.

Caol Ila on an Oloroso sherry butt is not the obvious choice – the distillery uses primarily bourbon casks for its official range. The sherry cask adds a layer of dried fruit and chocolate that softens the smoke and brings winey depth.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Sherry-dried fruit – raisins and plums – meets Caol Ila's typical salty smoke. A hint of dark chocolate in the background.

    Palate

Soft and full. Smoke is present but tamed by the sherry cask. Dried figs, cloves and salted-caramel sweetness make it complex without heaviness.

    Finish

Moderately long. Smoke fades gently with dried fruit and a light touch of bitter dark chocolate at the end.

  • Caol Ila 33 Years The Kinship Series Hunter Laing single cask bourbon hogshead bottle 2023
    Item no.: 222555-45537

Thirty-three years in a single cask. While Caol Ila has distilled and matured its well-known 12-year for Diageo's needs, this cask has waited – unseen and untouched – in a refill bourbon hogshead in a Scottish warehouse. Hunter Laing found it in 2023 for The Kinship: the series' most important bottling of the year.

    Expert's description

Caol Ila 33 Years The Kinship Series Hunter Laing is an Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky matured in a single refill bourbon hogshead, bottled at 44.5% without chill filtration and with natural colour. 300 bottles.

The Kinship is Hunter Laing's prestige series – one expression per distillery, released once a year. For 2023, the choice fell on this 33-year Caol Ila, which according to Hunter Laing itself celebrates the Scottish whisky community and the regions that have made Scotland world-famous.

Three decades in a refill bourbon hogshead give a Caol Ila that has changed: the smoke is there, but softened and integrated over time. This is not the young, salty Caol Ila – it is a mature, layered version of it.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Light peat smoke with caramel, stewed fruit and soft beeswax. A salty sea breeze that immediately sets the scene on Islay's coast – but in a slower, more reflective tone than young bottlings.

    Palate

Soft and layered. Clear maritime saltiness, seaweed and fresh oysters. The smoke is discreet and elegantly integrated, with room for deeper notes of oak, dried fruit and medicinal herbs. A bottling to spend time with.

    Finish

Long, leathery and satisfying. Worn leather, glowing peat embers and a persistent salty close that is in no hurry.

  • Glen Garioch 2008 Old Malt Cask bottle in dark glass with plain label
    Item no.: 22227865438-879212

Old Malt Cask is the range where Hunter Laing always lands on 50%. Not because the number is magic, but because it leaves the cask room to speak without the strength taking over. Here it is a refill hogshead filled in October 2008.

    The expert's description

Glen Garioch 2008/2022 Old Malt Cask 13 Year Old is a Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky matured in a refill hogshead and bottled at 50%.

The cask was filled in October 2008 and emptied in February 2022 after 13 years. A refill hogshead gives less wood than a 1st fill cask, and that is exactly why the dry, cereal-driven core of the Glen Garioch spirit stands out so clearly here. The bottling produced 352 bottles, non-chill filtered and with no added colour.

Hunter Laing runs Old Malt Cask as the workhorse of its ranges. The company was carved out of Douglas Laing in 2013 when the brothers split the portfolio, and Stewart Laing took Old Malt Cask across to the new firm. Since then they have built Ardnahoe distillery on Islay.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Dry apple fritters, malt and a hint of heather honey. Over the fruit sits a dusty, almost papery note you often meet in Glen Garioch from used casks.

    Palate

Cereal and firm. Green apples, pear and pale caramel, with a peppery edge from the 50%. Not sweet, more taut and malt-driven.

    Finish

Medium and dry. Malt, a little baked apple and a peppery warmth that lingers on the palate.

    Item no.: 059763-615-679

Fifty-five percent of Glengoyne own range sits in sherry casks. Here Hunter Laing has done the opposite and left one refill butt alone for sixteen years.

    The expert's description

Glengoyne 2007/2023 Old Malt Cask is a Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky from a single refill butt, bottled at 50%.

The whisky was distilled in June 2007 and bottled in October 2023 after sixteen years. The cask gave 677 bottles, which is a lot for a single cask — a butt holds around 500 litres against half that for a hogshead.

Old Malt Cask is the oldest range from Hunter Laing and is always bottled at 50%. The whisky is non-chill filtered and of natural colour, so the strength is the only thing adjusted.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Malt, apple and light caramel with a dry nutty note. The refill cask has let the spirit stand forward.

    Palate

Dry and malty with green apples, nuts and a hint of honey. The 50% gives bite, but the whisky is still bright in its expression.

    Finish

Long and dry with malt, nuts and peppery oak.

  • Highland Park 27 Year Old The Kinship bottle by Hunter Laing
    Item no.: 222555-45540

Twenty-seven winters change a whisky. The peat that once stood sharp has settled into a low, steady hum, and the heather honey has had time to spread across the whole glass. Hunter Laing found the cask, left it a little longer, then emptied it in one go.

    The expert's description

Highland Park 27 Year Old The Kinship 2023 Single Orkney Malt Whisky 52.5% is a Single Orkney Malt Whisky drawn from one refill hogshead and bottled without chill filtration at its natural cask strength of 52.5%.

The Kinship is Hunter Laing's annual collection of old single casks, presented around Fèis Ìle, the whisky festival on Islay. The Laing family has worked with casks for three generations out of Glasgow, and selection follows a single rule: the cask has to carry its own age. This bottling comes not from Islay but from Kirkwall on Orkney.

Highland Park has been distilling since 1798 and still dries part of its own malt over peat cut at Hobbister Moor, just outside Kirkwall. No trees grow on Orkney, so the peat is heather and moss rather than woody debris, and the smoke it gives is floral and aromatic instead of medicinal. After 27 years that smoke has sunk deep into the spirit.

A refill hogshead has held whisky before, so it gives less wood and more distillery. That is exactly what you want when a malt has to sit for almost three decades without turning dry and tannic. The cask yielded 268 bottles, filled in 2023 at natural colour.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Baked pears and heather honey sit on top, with a ripe, earthy peat underneath that reads more like warm ash than a bonfire. Give it five minutes and beeswax and dried apricot arrive.

    Palate

Sweetness leads. Honey, mandarin and a flick of passion fruit, before black pepper and dry oak spice tighten the grip. The 52.5% registers as warmth rather than heat.

    Finish

Long and understated. The sweetness lingers, the smoke stays quietly in the back, and heather and a trace of salt close it out.

    Item no.: 505956-498796-464-18

The journey to Islay begins on the ferry from Kennacraig, where the sea air starts to smell properly of seaweed and smoke. Islay Journey is the Laing family's take on exactly that crossing, a bottle built entirely from the island's own distilleries, assembled by the people behind Ardnahoe.

    The expert's description

Hunter Laing Islay Journey Series is an Islay Blended Malt Scotch Whisky, composed of malt whisky from several Islay distilleries and bottled at 46%.

The whisky belongs to Hunter Laing & Co.'s Journey Series, a range of regional blended malts in which Islay Journey represents the island's characteristic peated style. Behind the bottle stands Hunter Laing & Co., a family-owned bottler founded in 2013 by Stewart Laing together with his sons Andrew and Scott, and since 2018 also owner of Islay's newest distillery, Ardnahoe. The malt behind Islay Journey has matured in bourbon hogsheads before being married together for this no-age-statement release.

Islay Journey is designed as an accessible introduction to the island's whisky style, with several distilleries contributing to the overall character rather than letting a single signature dominate.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Dry smoke, ash and tar settle like a blanket over the aroma, with a touch of salted caramel behind it.

    Palate

Robust peat meets sea salt and seaweed, with an oily texture that ties the different distilleries together.

    Finish

Medium length and dry, with lingering smoke and a light ashy note that fades like a burnt-out beach fire.

Scarabus 10 Year Old Whisky is a Single Islay Malt Whisky from Hunter Laing, bottled at 46% after 10 years of maturation.

The source distillery is undisclosed, but the earthy, peat-smoked character clearly reveals its Islay origin. Hunter Laing uses the name Scarabus — a scarab, the Egyptian symbol of renewal — as an umbrella for their independent Islay bottlings.

    Tasting Notes

  • Scarabus Cigar Malt Edition Hunter Laing Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky 46%
    Item no.: 222249-12235

There's a bottle on Islay nobody will name a name for. Behind the bronze label with its hidden symbols sits a peated dram, born to mark the opening of Hunter Laing's own distillery, Ardnahoe. Scarabus means "a rocky place" in Old Norse - and that's about as much as the Laing family are willing to give away.

    Expert's Description

Scarabus Cigar Malt is a peated Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky, fully matured across Oloroso sherry casks, Pedro Ximénez sherry casks and Ruby Port casks, and bottled at 46%.

Scarabus Cigar Malt is the newest addition to Hunter Laing's Scarabus collection, and it stands apart from the other expressions through its cask composition. Where the original bottling sticks to a more classic maturation, Cigar Malt is matured simultaneously across three cask types - Oloroso, Pedro Ximénez and Ruby Port - each layering something different on top of the signature Islay peat. The source distillery is undisclosed, as is tradition across the whole Scarabus range, though the depth of the smoke and the oily texture hint at one of the island's better-known peated producers.

The name Cigar Malt is no accident. The whisky is built to hold its own against a bold cigar without either one drowning the other out - cocoa, roasted notes and a persistent smokiness give it the weight for it.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Rich and generous with candied orange peel, stewed red berries and almonds, while an earthy peat works through underneath.

    Palate

Dry peat smoke layers with dark treacle, dark fruit and a gentle, toasted sweetness from the casks.

    Finish

Long and warming, with a rounded sweetness that lingers well after the last sip.

The symbols on the Scarabus label are deliberately cryptic and draw on islander John Francis Campbell's invention, a sunshine recorder that tracked the hours of daylight on Islay - the same urge to measure the unmeasurable runs through the brand's whole "only those who seek shall find" philosophy.

    Item no.: 22244222554-225

Twenty-seven years after distillation, a single refill hogshead remains the only witness. Cask No. HL16113 held a mature, rounded Tamnavulin that Hunter Laing chose to let stand entirely on its own.

    Expert description

Tamnavulin 1991/2019 Old Malt Cask 27 Year Old is a Single Speyside Malt Whisky, matured in a refill hogshead and bottled at 48.6%.

The whisky is bottled under Old Malt Cask, a series originally created by Douglas Laing in 1998 and continued since 2013 by Hunter Laing & Co., after Stewart Laing left the family business and set up his own house together with sons Scott and Andrew. The series is known for a consistent strength around 50% and for letting each individual cask's character speak for itself.

This release comes from Cask No. HL16113, a refill hogshead that held the whisky from distillation in 1991 to bottling in 2019 - 27 years in total. Only 308 bottles were drawn from this single cask, with no chill-filtration and no added colour, so what reaches the glass is the pure, time-worn character of this particular cask.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Ripe apple and a trace of beeswax meet gentle butter and a muted note of old oak.

    Palate

Round and oily, with notes of honey cake, dried apricot and a warm streak of clove spice.

    Finish

Long and dry, closing on a hint of walnut and a lightly tannic oak from the many years of maturation.

About Hunter Laing

Hunter Laing & Co. is a classic name in the Scotch whisky trade, built for generations on bottling other people's casks rather than distilling their own. The family business holds substantial stocks of both young and old whisky from many different distilleries, giving them the freedom to shape the series they bring to market. For collectors, the name matters because so many releases are single cask – each cask its own story, its own label, its own limited bottle count – while beginners can use Hunter Laing as a shortcut to tasting distilleries rarely seen as standalone releases.

History & background

Hunter Laing & Co. was founded in 2013, when brothers Stewart and Scott Laing chose to split the old family firm Douglas Laing into two independent companies. The family's roots in the whisky trade go back much further, and over the years they've built a reputation as one of the great, well-respected independent bottlers. A major new chapter arrived in April 2019, when the family became distillers themselves with the opening of Ardnahoe Distillery on Islay – their first ever distillery, on the island's north-east coast.

Production & style

As a bottler, Hunter Laing doesn't distil in the traditional sense (aside from Ardnahoe), but instead selects, matures and bottles casks from a long list of Scottish distilleries. The firm regularly sends out sample bottles of its casks so international importers can pick the releases best suited to their market – a process that gives series like Old Malt Cask and The Sovereign their wide spread of styles and ages.

Signature style

Varied, authentic, single cask
No fixed flavour profile, but a guarantee of unfiltered distillery character – each cask shows the individual distillery raw and relatively untouched by heavy vatting.
