Glen Garioch Whisky

In Oldmeldrum, north of Aberdeen, Glen Garioch has been distilling since 1797, making it one of the Highlands' oldest distilleries. Over the years it has switched between using peat and dropping it entirely, before eventually returning to a lightly smoky style. Now owned by Beam Suntory, it stands as a quiet, historically rich counterpart to the region's more famous names.

  • Aberdeenshire Glen Garioch 12 year old bottle with handwritten Little Brown Dog label, Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky
    Item no.: 222-164646

Two lads on a farm in Aberdeenshire had grown tired of good single malt always vanishing from the shelf before they got there. The idea was simple: make a whisky people can actually find on the shelf. This bottle is the first proof of how it should taste, and it went out of the door before the labels were ready.

Please note: The label on this preview release is handwritten and hand signed, because the printed labels did not arrive in time. Future batches will carry the final design.

    The Expert's Description

Aberdeenshire Glen Garioch 12 Years Old Little Brown Dog is a Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky matured in 60% 1st fill bourbon casks and 40% Pedro Ximénez and Oloroso sherry casks, bottled at 46%. It was distilled at Glen Garioch in 2013, bottled in 2025 by Little Brown Dog and limited to 500 hand-numbered bottles.

Andrew Smith and Chris Reid of Little Brown Dog have spent years working towards a signature bottling that does not simply appear in small rare batches but stays on the shelf. The vatting is their own work: the bulk from first fill bourbon for vanilla and cereal sweetness, the rest from sherry casks, both refill and first fill, for fruit and depth. The result lands somewhere different from an official Glen Garioch, which tends to be drier and maltier.

The whisky is neither chill filtered nor coloured. This release is a preview bottling that shows the direction of Little Brown Dog’s forthcoming regular single malt under the Aberdeenshire name.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Ripe pear and honey first, with a clear malty floor underneath. The sherry portion reports in as raisins, orange peel and a streak of dark sugar. There is a light waxy note too, which Glen Garioch often gives.

    Palate

Soft and full. Vanilla and baked apple open, then the sherry brings dried fruit and a mild spiced warmth of cinnamon and a little ginger. At 46% it is round enough for a weeknight, yet there is still body enough to reward attention.

    Finish

Medium length. Malt, honey and a drier oak note, with a final suggestion of raisin. Clean and free of bitterness.

    Investment Potential

Medium. Five hundred bottles with handwritten, hand signed labels amount in practice to a one-off release, and preview bottlings from the start of a bottler’s project tend to become sought after once the regular series is running.

    Did You Know?

Little Brown Dog is named after Andrew's dog, whose nickname was exactly that, the little brown dog. The company started in 2018 on a farm at Fetternear in Aberdeenshire and has since grown from pure bottling into distilling as well, running both a small copper pot still and a larger column for neutral spirit.

Two guys from Aberdeenshire, a couple of bourbon barrels and a good deal of patience. Glen Garioch is Little Brown Dog's closest neighbour, and they waited a long time for casks worth putting their name on.

    The expert's description

Glen Garioch 10 Year Old Little Brown Dog Small Batch is a Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky matured in 1st fill bourbon barrels and bottled at cask strength 56.2%.

The spirit ran off the stills at Glen Garioch on 17 November 2014 and went into glass on 17 February 2025. Little Brown Dog married two 1st fill bourbon barrels for this Small Batch, giving 337 bottles, non-chill filtered and with no added colour.

Glen Garioch sits in Oldmeldrum north-west of Aberdeen and has been distilling since 1797. It is the most easterly working malt distillery in Scotland, and the house style runs drier and more cereal-driven than the softer Speyside profile you meet an hour's drive west. 1st fill bourbon barrels lay vanilla and bright fruit over that cereal core without burying it.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Pear tart straight out of the oven, kiwi and baked apple. There is a whisper of whipped cream behind the fruit, and a few minutes in the glass draws out something floral.

    Palate

Full and juicy. Tinned pineapple, honeydew melon and rhubarb crumble, carried by a cask strength that gives the whisky body without scorching. Cereal malt sits under the fruit the whole way.

    Finish

Crème anglaise and conference pear, fading into a dry twist of white pepper. Long and gently spiced.

  • Glen Garioch 2008 Old Malt Cask bottle in dark glass with plain label
    Item no.: 22227865438-879212

Old Malt Cask is the range where Hunter Laing always lands on 50%. Not because the number is magic, but because it leaves the cask room to speak without the strength taking over. Here it is a refill hogshead filled in October 2008.

    The expert's description

Glen Garioch 2008/2022 Old Malt Cask 13 Year Old is a Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky matured in a refill hogshead and bottled at 50%.

The cask was filled in October 2008 and emptied in February 2022 after 13 years. A refill hogshead gives less wood than a 1st fill cask, and that is exactly why the dry, cereal-driven core of the Glen Garioch spirit stands out so clearly here. The bottling produced 352 bottles, non-chill filtered and with no added colour.

Hunter Laing runs Old Malt Cask as the workhorse of its ranges. The company was carved out of Douglas Laing in 2013 when the brothers split the portfolio, and Stewart Laing took Old Malt Cask across to the new firm. Since then they have built Ardnahoe distillery on Islay.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Dry apple fritters, malt and a hint of heather honey. Over the fruit sits a dusty, almost papery note you often meet in Glen Garioch from used casks.

    Palate

Cereal and firm. Green apples, pear and pale caramel, with a peppery edge from the 50%. Not sweet, more taut and malt-driven.

    Finish

Medium and dry. Malt, a little baked apple and a peppery warmth that lingers on the palate.

  • Glen Garioch Signatory Small Batch bottle with classic white label
    Item no.: 222333-88745

Signatory is based at Edradour in Perthshire, and the Small Batch range is where they marry a handful of casks from the same distillery rather than chase the one perfect barrel. Number 14 in the series came from Glen Garioch.

    The expert's description

Glen Garioch 2011/2023 Signatory Small Batch Edition #14 is a Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky matured in 1st fill bourbon barrels and bottled at 48.2%.

The batch was distilled in 2011 and spent 12 years in 1st fill bourbon barrels. The 48.2% is not cask strength but the strength Signatory chose to gather the batch at, and the whisky is neither chill filtered nor coloured. The point of a small batch is to gain the breadth of several casks without losing the distillery voice.

Signatory Vintage has been bottling single malt since 1988 and bought Edradour distillery in 2002, where the warehouses sit today. Andrew Symington built the company on one simple principle: buy the casks early, leave them alone for a long time, and do as little as possible to them before bottling.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Fresh orange peel and honey, with dried barley behind. There is a confectionery streak to it — coconut macaroon and soft vanilla, clearer once the glass has stood a while.

    Palate

Creamy and round. Toffee, vanilla custard and butterscotch, with baked orchard fruit and toasted almonds. The spice is restrained and arrives only at the end.

    Finish

Medium to long. Vanilla and caramel first, then a warming wave of spice and a dry American oak close.

  • Glen Garioch 8 Year Old bottle in classic green glass
    Item no.: 059763-615-492

An 8 year old from Glen Garioch is not something you run into on shelves any more. This bottling belongs to the years when the distillery still kept a young expression in its standard range, and it shows a side of the house most people only know from older bottles.

Please note: This bottling has been colour-adjusted with caramel E150a.

    The expert's description

Glen Garioch 8 Year Old is a Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky matured in oak casks and bottled at 40%.

The short age statement is the whole point. Eight years is enough for the cask to round the edges off, but not enough for it to take over, which is why the dry, cereal-driven character of the Glen Garioch spirit comes through so plainly. This is an official distillery bottling and has since been withdrawn from the range.

Glen Garioch has been distilling in Oldmeldrum, Aberdeenshire since 1797 and is the most easterly working malt distillery in Scotland. The house has shifted style more than once over the years, and the younger bottlings from the early 2000s sit between the old peated era and the clean, fruity line the distillery follows today.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Malt and heather honey, dried apple and a trace of baked bread. Calm and understated — this is not a whisky that shouts.

    Palate

Cereal and lightly sweet. Barley, honey and pear, with a dryness mid-palate that keeps the sweetness in check. The body is slender at 40%.

    Finish

Short to medium. Malt and a dry, faintly bitter turn of oak at the close.

About Glen Garioch Whisky

Glen Garioch is one of the Highlands' oldest distilleries, located in Oldmeldrum north of Aberdeen. For a newcomer, it's a warm, lightly spiced, occasionally smoky style; for the connoisseur, Glen Garioch is fascinating because the distillery's shifting use of peat over the decades means older and newer vintages can taste surprisingly different, turning vertical tastings into something of a time trip.

History & Background

The distillery was founded in 1797, making it one of Scotland's oldest. For a period, the distillery used its waste heat to power local greenhouses where tomatoes were grown - a practice that today is a well-known part of the distillery's history.

Production & Style

Glen Garioch has varied between peated and unpeated production throughout its history, but today primarily produces an unpeated, spicy Highland-style single malt.

Signature Style

Spicy, Full-Bodied, Earthy
The flavor offers a spicy, full-bodied character with earthy notes and a hint of honey.
