Grappa Miniature

  • Small miniature bottle of Marolo grappa with amber-coloured content
    Item no.: 22227865481-2021-03-0013-5cl

Five centilitres are enough to understand why cask-aged grappa from Barolo's Nebbiolo grapes is considered some of the most characterful in the Italian grappa tradition. A small bottle with a big flavour.

    Expert description

Marolo Grappa Miniature di Barolo Fadlagret is an Italian grappa distilled from the pomace of Nebbiolo grapes from the Barolo district in Piedmont and aged in oak barrels, bottled at 42% ABV in a 5 cl tasting bottle.

The Barolo grappa is one of the expressions where Marolo's cask-ageing tradition really shows. The spirit rests in small oak barrels, where it gradually takes on colour, sweetness and spice from the wood while keeping the Nebbiolo grape's characteristic perfume from the fresh distillate.

The miniature format lets you get acquainted with a cask-aged Barolo grappa without committing to a full bottle, and works just as well as a small gift or a closing tasting after dinner.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

The aroma is amber in character, with vanilla, toasted almonds and a hint of tobacco.

    Palate

The palate is full and spiced, with cocoa and a soft, round sweetness from the cask.

    Finish

The finish is long and warm, with a lingering trace of wood and spice.

When Marolo launched its first cask-aged grappa resting in small acacia wood barrels in 1980, it was one of the earliest examples of cask-aged grappa in Italy and helped change the perception of grappa as a rough farmhouse spirit.

A drop of Tuscany from a Piedmont distillery. This small bottle packs the same floral Sangiovese character found in its big sister's 70 cl bottle into a format made for tasting your way forward.

    Expert description

Marolo Grappa Miniature di Brunello Valdicava is an Italian grappa distilled from the pomace of Sangiovese grapes from the Valdicava vineyard in the Brunello di Montalcino district of Tuscany, bottled at 42% ABV in a 5 cl tasting bottle.

Because Marolo distils grapes from several Italian regions, this miniature is one of the easiest ways to taste a Tuscan grappa from a Piedmont-based distillery without buying a full bottle. The pomace comes from Valdicava, a vineyard on the Montosoli hill in Montalcino that grows exclusively Sangiovese Grosso.

The grappa is gently distilled in bain-marie stills and rests in stainless steel, preserving the fresh, floral character that is typical of the Sangiovese grape.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

The aroma offers fresh raspberry and a hint of dried rose petals.

    Palate

The palate is soft, round and easy-drinking, with a touch of sweetness.

    Finish

The finish is short to medium, clean and fruity.

Although Marolo is based in Piedmont, the distillery works with vineyards as far away as Tuscany - this miniature is therefore one of the few ways to taste a single-vineyard Sangiovese grappa from a Piedmont distillery.

The Moscato grape is so aromatic that it can barely hide its peach-blossom scent - even after pressing, fermentation and distillation. That character is exactly what this small bottle is about.

    Expert description

Marolo Grappa Miniature di Moscato is an Italian grappa distilled from the pomace of Moscato grapes used for the popular Moscato d'Asti wine, bottled at 42% ABV in a 5 cl tasting bottle.

Moscato is one of the most recognisable grape varieties when it comes to aroma. The scent of peach blossom and grape follows all the way from the vineyard through fermentation and pressing, and Marolo gently distils the pomace in bain-marie stills to preserve as much of the natural perfume as possible.

The grappa rests in stainless steel and therefore stays clear and uncoloured, which highlights the fresh, floral character rather than adding flavour from wood.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

The aroma is intense and floral, with a distinct touch of muscat grape and peach blossom.

    Palate

The palate is soft and aromatic, with hints of white chocolate and peach sweetness.

    Finish

The finish is short and clean, with a light peppery close.

    Did you know?

The Moscato grape's aroma is so powerful that it is one of very few varieties where the grape itself is clearly recognisable in the finished grappa - most other grapes lose far more of their original aroma along the way.
