Five centilitres are enough to understand why cask-aged grappa from Barolo's Nebbiolo grapes is considered some of the most characterful in the Italian grappa tradition. A small bottle with a big flavour.

    Expert description

Marolo Grappa Miniature di Barolo Fadlagret is an Italian grappa distilled from the pomace of Nebbiolo grapes from the Barolo district in Piedmont and aged in oak barrels, bottled at 42% ABV in a 5 cl tasting bottle.

The Barolo grappa is one of the expressions where Marolo's cask-ageing tradition really shows. The spirit rests in small oak barrels, where it gradually takes on colour, sweetness and spice from the wood while keeping the Nebbiolo grape's characteristic perfume from the fresh distillate.

The miniature format lets you get acquainted with a cask-aged Barolo grappa without committing to a full bottle, and works just as well as a small gift or a closing tasting after dinner.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

The aroma is amber in character, with vanilla, toasted almonds and a hint of tobacco.

    Palate

The palate is full and spiced, with cocoa and a soft, round sweetness from the cask.

    Finish

The finish is long and warm, with a lingering trace of wood and spice.

    Did you know?

When Marolo launched its first cask-aged grappa resting in small acacia wood barrels in 1980, it was one of the earliest examples of cask-aged grappa in Italy and helped change the perception of grappa as a rough farmhouse spirit.

Frequently asked questions about Marolo Grappa Miniature di Barolo Fadlagret

    Why is this grappa cask-aged?

Since 1980, Marolo has worked with resting grappa in wooden casks to add colour and spiced depth to the otherwise clear, grape-driven spirit. The Barolo grappa is one of the expressions where that style shows most clearly.

What is the difference between cask-aged and unaged grappa?

Unaged grappa rests in stainless steel and stays clear with the grape's pure aroma. Cask-aged grappa instead takes on colour, vanilla and spice from the wood, giving a rounder and more complex flavour.

Which grape is behind this grappa?

The grappa is distilled from the pomace of Nebbiolo, the same grape used for Barolo wine, which this grappa style is named after.

Is the 5 cl bottle suitable as a gift?

Yes, the miniature format is perfect as a small tasting gift or an addition to a larger gift basket, letting the recipient discover a cask-aged grappa without a big commitment.

How is the cask ageing best noticed in the glass?

Let the grappa sit in the glass for a moment before tasting. That gives the vanilla-tinged, lightly spiced notes from the cask time to unfold before the warm finish takes over.

How should an opened miniature bottle be stored?

Store the bottle upright, cool and dark, with the cap sealed tightly. The small volume should be enjoyed within a reasonable time after opening to best preserve the cask-driven aromas.
