Feis Ile Whisky

For one week a year, Islay stops for the rest of the world. Distillery doors swing open, corks pop, and the island's whisky family celebrates itself with bottlings no one else can get.

  • Big Peat Feis Ile 2018 Douglas Laing Blended Islay Malt Whisky 70 cl 48
    Item no.: 22227865468-8114

An early Fèis Ìle release of Big Peat, created for Islay's 2018 whisky festival.

    Expert description

Big Peat Feis Ile 2018 is a limited edition of the Islay blend, created specifically for the 2018 Fèis Ìle festival, bottled at 48%. Big Peat was launched in 2009 by independent bottler Douglas Laing & Co as the first in the company's 'Remarkable Regional Malts' series. The idea was to create the 'ultimate distillation of Islay' by blending single malt whisky from several of the island's distilleries, including Caol Ila, Bowmore and Ardbeg, without using grain whisky. Big Peat is non-chill filtered, with no colouring added. Each year Douglas Laing releases a Christmas Edition of Big Peat at natural cask strength, and at Islay's Fèis Ìle whisky festival, special limited editions are regularly released.

Every summer, Islay fills with smoke, music and whisky people from every corner of the globe – that's Fèis Ìle, the island's own festival for the peat-loving crowd. Big Peat has marked it with a special release every year since 2013, and in 2026 the festival turns 40. Beneath this year's mosaic label sits a peated whisky that's been left to rest a little longer, in Pedro Ximénez Sherry casks.

    Expert's Description

Big Peat Fèis Ìle 2026 Pedro Ximénez Sherry Casks is an Islay Blended Malt Scotch Whisky finished in Pedro Ximénez Sherry casks and bottled at cask strength, 52.6%. The bottle's full name is Friends of Fèis Ìle 2026, Douglas Laing's contribution to the island's legendary whisky festival in its anniversary year.

Big Peat isn't tied to a single distillery. Douglas Laing in Glasgow blends single malt whisky from several of Islay's distilleries into one whisky that gathers the island's peated character into a single bottle, without disclosing the exact sources. For this release, the father-daughter team behind the house, Fred and Cara Laing, let the blend rest further in Pedro Ximénez Sherry casks, and every bottle is then signed by hand. The casks lay a layer of figs, dates and roasted coffee over the earthy Islay smoke, while the whisky is neither coloured nor chill-filtered – so whatever the cask gave it stays in the glass.

The label is a small work of art in itself: a mosaic portrait of Big Peat's bearded mascot, built from thousands of faces submitted by fans around the world. It makes the 2026 release as much a tribute to the community around the festival as to the whisky itself.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Earthy Islay peat leads the way, followed by sweet bonfire smoke, sticky figs, dates, dark-roast coffee and a hint of sea air.

    Palate

Toasted walnuts and cocoa meet a velvety sweetness from the Pedro Ximénez Sherry, while medicinal peat and charred oak keep things balanced.

    Finish

Long and warming, with a dry Sherry richness and a lingering, coastal smokiness that stays in the mouth.

  • Elements of Islay Campfire Feis Ile 2025 Islay Blended Malt Scotch Whisky bottle
    Item no.: 056633-3352

A fire on the beach, marshmallows on a stick and two chocolate biscuits to press them between. Elixir Distillers has carried the American s’mores tradition over to Islay and built a festival whisky on top of it.

    The expert description

Elements of Islay Campfire Feis Ile 2025 is an Islay Blended Malt Scotch Whisky matured in sherry casks, bourbon casks and toasted new oak and bottled at 54.5%.

The bottle was made for Fèis Ìle 2025, the annual whisky and music festival on Islay, and holds whisky from three different Islay distilleries. Which three is not revealed. The flavour target, by contrast, is entirely specific: the whole release is built to land on s’mores, with smoke, burnt sugar and chocolate arriving in the same mouthful.

To get there, Elixir Distillers worked with three types of wood. Pedro Ximenez and oloroso sherry casks deliver the dark sweetness, 1st fill bourbon casks give vanilla and body, and toasted new oak contributes the burnt, almost caramelised edge. The whisky is neither chill filtered nor coloured.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Pronounced smoke straight away, then ginger, dark chocolate, burnt caramel and candied orange.

    Palate

Intense and powerful. The notes from the nose return, but tighter and sweeter, with toasted marshmallow, sooty chocolate and a rich, almost syrupy texture.

    Finish

Very long. The smoke lingers alongside dried orange and a warm, peppery note from the toasted oak.

About Fèis Île

Fèis Île - roughly pronounced "faysh EE-luh" and simply meaning "the Islay Festival" in Gaelic - has become the whisky world's answer to a pilgrimage. For one week every spring, the island's nine distilleries throw their doors wide open with open days, tours, concerts and local markets. But what really pulls whisky people from across the world to this small island off Scotland's west coast are the exclusive Fèis Île bottlings, released by the distilleries only during festival week - often in such limited numbers that they sell out before the festival itself is even over.

History & Background

Fèis Île did not start out as a whisky festival. The first edition ran in 1986 as a local cultural celebration with walks, talks, ceilidhs and music - whisky was, at the time, just a small part of a programme that stretched across several weeks. It was only around the year 2000 that the distilleries became properly involved in the planning and began introducing their own open days and special festival bottlings. Since then, Fèis Île has grown from local tradition into a fixed date on the international whisky calendar.

Production & Style

Because Fèis Île bottlings come from nine different distilleries on Islay itself, the style is anything but uniform. Here, the heavy, medicinal peat smoke of Ardbeg and Laphroaig meets the gentler, maritime notes of Bunnahabhain and Bruichladdich. What the releases share is that they are often single-cask bottlings or specially selected batches that the distilleries do not sell outside festival week.

Signature Style

Peated, Maritime, Exclusive
The range spans smoked seaweed and black pepper through to honey and salted caramel, depending on which distillery the bottling comes from - but every Fèis Île release shares a raw, unfiltered Islay character.

Collector Appeal

Fèis Île bottlings rank among the most sought-after on the auction market, precisely because the runs are small and never repeated. Bottles from past festival years steadily climb in value, particularly from the most in-demand distilleries such as Ardbeg and Bowmore.

Did You Know?

In its early years, Fèis Île ran across three weekends and two full weeks - a very different length from today's ten-day festival.
