About Bowmore Whisky
Where many of Islay's other distilleries lean into raw, unfiltered power, Bowmore aims for something more elegant. The distillery sits in the middle of the village of the same name, on the shore of Loch Indaal, and has been there so long it is hard to picture the island without it. Since 1994 it has been owned by Japan's Suntory - now Beam Suntory - and although the sale raised a few purist eyebrows at the time, Japanese precision and respect for tradition have suited Bowmore well. For beginners it is a gentle way into Islay's smoky world, while age-statement and legendary vintage bottlings give collectors decades of hunting.
History & Background
Bowmore was founded in 1779 by David Simson, making it the oldest licensed distillery on Islay - and one of the oldest in all of Scotland. For most of its life it was locally owned, until it was sold to Stanley P. Morrison in 1963, who modernised the site considerably. The real turning point came in 1994, when Suntory took over ownership, making Bowmore the first Scotch distillery under Japanese ownership. Since then the range has grown to include mizunara-cask releases that bridge the two whisky cultures.
Production & Style
Bowmore is one of the few distilleries that still malts part of its own barley on traditional floor maltings - the old stone floor where the damp grain is turned by hand several times a day. Peating levels are kept deliberately moderate, and the water is drawn from the River Laggan, which flows down from the peat bogs behind the distillery. Some of the maturation happens in the famous No. 1 Vaults, a warehouse partly below sea level, where the maritime damp leaves its mark on the whisky year after year.

Softened peat, sea salt and a touch of brine fold into sweet notes of dark fruit, honey and vanilla - and the older releases often surprise with exotic fruit hiding behind the smoke.

Bowmore 21 Years Old has been named World's Best Single Malt Whisky at the World Whiskies Awards, and both Whisky Advocate and Jim Murray's Whisky Bible have repeatedly praised the core range.
For Collectors
Black Bowmore from 1964 is regarded as one of the most legendary bottlings in whisky history, and vintage releases from the 1960s and 70s consistently fetch record prices at auction - a third edition of Black Bowmore has sold for well over £10,000.
