Remarkable Regional Malts Whisky

Five regions, five characters, one purpose: to give you the whole of Scotland in a single range. Douglas Laing's Remarkable Regional Malts brings together blended malt whisky from the Lowlands to Islay under five distinctive names, each with its own animal and its own personality. It's the most straightforward way to travel the whole country without leaving the sofa.

  • Douglas Laing Remarkable Regional Malts miniature set with six whisky bottles
    Item no.: 22227865479-1106-197280096

Six small bottles, six Scottish regions. This is about as close to a tour of Scotland as you can get without leaving the kitchen table, and Douglas Laing has packed it into a box worth leaving out on display.

    The expert description

Douglas Laing Remarkable Regional Malts is a set of six Blended Malt Scotch Whisky in 5 cl bottles, bottled between 46% and 46.8%.

The range is Douglas Laing’s attempt to translate the geography of Scottish whisky into six bottles. Each release draws malt from a single area, so the difference between a Lowland and an Islay becomes something you taste your way towards rather than read about. All six are bottled at a minimum of 46% and without chill filtration.

The set holds The Epicurean from the Lowlands at 46.2%, Timorous Beastie from the Highlands at 46.8%, Scallywag from Speyside at 46%, The Gauldrons from Campbeltown at 46.2%, Rock Island from the Islands at 46.8% and Big Peat from Islay at 46%.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

The range is the entire point. From the bright citrus and cut grass of The Epicurean, through the sherry sweetness of Scallywag, to the tar, smoked ham and sea salt of Big Peat.

    Palate

Timorous Beastie gives honey and heather, The Gauldrons salted caramel and apple, Rock Island a soft smoke with seaweed underneath. Tasted side by side, regional character stops being an abstraction.

    Finish

Short and clean at the pale end, long and sooty at the smoky one. Order matters here. Begin with Big Peat and the rest of the evening tastes of peat.

    Did you know?

Douglas Laing was founded in 1948 and has never owned a distillery in the conventional sense. The firm bought casks from others and grew large by choosing well. Big Peat, named after a fictional Islay fisherman, is now in such demand that the Christmas edition sells out in hours.

    Item no.: 22227865468-220

Rock Oyster from Douglas Laing is an Island Blended Malt Scotch Whisky bottled at 46%, created as a tribute to the rugged, wind‑swept whisky islands of the Scottish archipelago. It brings together malt whisky from Orkney, Arran, Jura and Islay in a single expression where maritime notes, gentle smoke and sweet malt weave into a distinctly coastal profile. The whisky is bottled without chill filtration and without added colour, allowing it to appear as natural and unaltered as possible.

Rock Oyster is part of Douglas Laing’s series of regionally inspired blended malts, each designed to capture the essence of a specific Scottish whisky region. The Island edition focuses on the influence of the sea, the salty air, the peat smoke and the robust malt character that define the island distilleries. The combination of whiskies from several islands creates a complexity that is both raw and harmonious, clearly reflecting the nature and climate of the region.

The aroma opens with a fresh breeze of sea spray and salty kelp, followed by citrus, pepper and a subtle smoke reminiscent of embers from a beach fire. Beneath the maritime layers lies a gentle malt sweetness that adds balance and depth.

The palate is full and lively. It begins with sweet malt and salted caramel, then a light peat smoke spreads across the tongue, giving the whisky its characteristic island signature. Notes of warming spice, fresh citrus and a touch of vanilla from the casks appear. The texture is soft yet marked by a mineral edge that enhances the maritime expression.

The finish is long, salty and lightly smoky. It leaves impressions of sea air, spice and a mild sweetness that rounds off the experience without shifting focus from the whisky’s coastal character.

Rock Oyster is ideal for those who enjoy the maritime style but prefer a more approachable and balanced smoke profile than the heaviest Islay expressions. It works both as an introduction to island whisky and as a complex dram for experienced enthusiasts. The interplay of freshness, smoke, salt and sweetness makes it versatile for relaxed sipping as well as deeper tasting.

About Remarkable Regional Malts Whisky

Remarkable Regional Malts is a range from the independent Scottish bottler Douglas Laing, where five blended malt whiskies each represent one of Scotland's five classic whisky regions. For the newcomer, the range is an ideal way to explore the differences between regions - from the soft Scallywag from Speyside to the heavily peated Big Peat from Islay; for the connoisseur, the charm lies in each bottle being a carefully composed blended malt that distils an entire region's character down into a single bottle.

History & Background

Douglas Laing is a family-owned independent bottler with roots stretching back to 1948, founded by Fred Douglas Laing, and has for generations specialised in blending malt whisky from multiple distilleries within the same region. The Remarkable Regional Malts range was developed as an educational and accessible way to present Scotland's regional whisky styles to a wider audience, with each expression - The Epicurean, Timorous Beastie, Scallywag, Rock Oyster and Big Peat - named after an animal or character symbolising the region's whisky style. The range is today among Douglas Laing's best-known and best-selling releases globally.

Production & Style

What ties the series together is that every bottle is a blended malt - a composition of single malt whiskies from several distilleries within the same region, rather than whisky from one single house. That gives Douglas Laing the freedom to compose a profile true to the region's general character without being tied to one distillery's individual style. The approach makes the series well suited as a teaching tool: compared side by side, the five bottles clearly show how geography, climate and tradition can shape flavour in very different ways.

Signature Style

Regional, Varied, Curated
From Scallywag's soft sherry sweetness to Big Peat's salted smoke, the series spans the full Scotch flavour spectrum - five different personalities, one shared philosophy.
