Alvaro Palacios Wine

Álvaro Palacios is the man who put Priorat on the wine map, spoken of in the same breath as Pingus and Vega Sicilia. One of nine siblings, he left his family's Rioja estate to build something of his own. The result is some of Spain's most sought-after cult wines, born from slate soil, old vines and a stubborn eye for quality.

About Alvaro Palacios

Álvaro Palacios is synonymous with Spain's new generation of winemakers, and his prestige wine L'Ermita ranks alongside Pingus and Vega Sicilia among Spain's leading cult wines. Álvaro is one of nine siblings, and his parents once owned the respected Rioja estate Palacios Remondo. For collectors, the name is a guarantee of exclusivity and sky-high prices on the rarest bottles, while the more accessible releases offer an honest glimpse into Priorat's mineral, powerful style.

History & Background

Álvaro could have stayed and taken over his family's estate in Rioja, but instead he moved to Bordeaux, trained as an oenologist and worked at several respected châteaux. In 1989 he settled in the then nearly forgotten Priorat region, alongside a small group of like-minded winemakers who believed in the area's old Garnacha and Cariñena vines. It was a bold bet on a district with no reputation, but today Priorat is regarded as one of Spain's most prestigious appellations, with Álvaro Palacios as one of the chief architects behind that transformation.

Production & Style

The wines are made mainly from Garnacha and Cariñena, grown on Priorat's steep slate soils, giving the grapes a mineral intensity.

Signature Style

Full-Bodied, Mineral, Complex
The flavour is full-bodied and complex, with clear minerality from the slate soil.
