Aalborg Snaps

Aalborg is Denmark's most iconic aquavit, the snaps that has graced the Christmas table since 1846 and still sets the standard for what Danish snaps should taste like. From the pure Taffel to the distinctive Røde Aalborg, the name is synonymous with tradition itself.

    Item no.: 222278654231473-72

He left the Royal Academy of Fine Arts as second in his class to take over the family distillery instead. Harald Jensen may have put down his brushes, but he left his mark all the same - in a glass, dry and spiced enough to remember the whole evening by.

    The Expert's Description

Harald Jensen Akvavit is a Danish akvavit at 45% ABV, aromatic and spiced, named after the painter and distiller Harald Jensen, who developed it in 1863.

It is distilled from caraway seed and combined with a distillate of, among other things, anise seed, galangal root, ginger, allspice and Roman chamomile - a spice composition that gives it a bold, complex profile.

In 1883, Harald Jensen sold his distillery to De Danske Spritfabrikker, who chose to keep the akvavit as a local Aalborg brand, named after its founder.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

The aroma is intense and spiced with distinct caraway, backed by warm notes of ginger and anise.

    Palate

The palate is dry and spiced with a nuanced caraway character alongside hints of dried spices and licorice.

    Item no.: 222278654231473-80

There does not need to be anything special to celebrate. Aalborg Jubilæums was born to mark a milestone birthday, but its golden, gentle taste works just as well on an ordinary Thursday, whenever the table could use a little festivity.

    The Expert's Description

Aalborg Jubilæums Akvavit is a golden Danish luxury akvavit at 40% ABV, which came to market in 1946 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the launch of Aalborg Taffel Akvavit.

It is made from a distillate of dill and coriander seed, rounded off with extract of American white oak. Unlike most other akvavits in the range, it is entirely free of caraway seed.

That gives an elegant, balanced taste where dill and coriander carry most of the weight, while star anise, citrus and caramel play smaller but important supporting roles.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

The aroma is golden and inviting with distinct dill and coriander, spiced by a hint of star anise.

    Palate

The palate is full-bodied and soft with dill and coriander upfront, backed by nuances of citrus and a light caramel sweetness.

    Finish

The finish is soft and round, where caramel and a discreet oak character bring the experience to a graceful close.

The sun sat in the glass long before the bottle was opened. Four months on sherry casks and a touch of Caribbean rum meet Danish grain spirit, and the result is warm, round and faintly exotic - the cold table gets an unexpected visit from southern climates.

    The Expert's Description

Aalborg FAD is a Danish akvavit at 37.5% ABV that breaks from most of the Aalborg family by skipping the classic, dominant caraway flavour altogether.

The spirit first rests for four months on sherry casks before being finished with rum from the Caribbean. That combination gives a spirit with clear warmth from the rum, supported by notes of bitter orange, lemon peel and vanilla from the cask ageing.

Aalborg FAD is the newest addition to the Aalborg family, made for those who prefer a mild, round dram over the strong, spiced caraway character usually associated with Danish akvavit.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

The aroma opens with rum and a light sweetness, with a hint of vanilla and ripe fruit in the background.

    Palate

The palate is mild and round, where bitter orange and lemon peel mingle with the warmth of the rum and a faint sweetness from the sherry cask.

    Finish

The finish is soft and lingering, with a last touch of vanilla and a warm, southern character.

A dew-soaked dill patch on an early summer morning, a slice of rye bread with shrimp and a spoonful of mayonnaise. Aalborg Dild bottles that whole picture into a single glass - green, fresh and ready to pour beside the seafood platter.

    The Expert's Description

Aalborg Dild Akvavit is a Danish akvavit at 38% ABV, made from a distillate of fresh green dill herb along with dill and lemon peel.

The spirit was originally launched in a 50cl bottle, created because Danish akvavit lacked a variant built specifically for fish and shellfish. Its success led to a 2010 relaunch in the classic 70cl Aalborg bottle.

Where many other akvavits lean on caraway, Aalborg Dild is built around the fresh, herbal taste of dill, rounded off with a touch of citrus that gives it extra lightness.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

The aroma immediately conjures dew-fresh green dill, rounded off with a touch of citrus.

    The Expert's Description

Aalborg Export Akvavit is a Danish akvavit at 38% ABV, launched in 1913 by C.A. Olesen, one of the founders of De Danske Spritfabrikker.

It is made from a caraway distillate rounded with sherry, which at the time made it the first cask-aged akvavit from Aalborg. That ageing gives the spirit its characteristic golden colour.

Where Aalborg Taffel is sharp and clear, Aalborg Export is softer and rounder, since the caraway aroma is complemented by nuances from the sherry casks.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

The aroma is round and inviting with a clear hint of caraway, carried by a light sweetness from the sherry.

Some aquavits need nothing more than a piece of well-aged cheese. Porse Snaps was made for exactly that meeting, where an herb's character meets the cheese's power.

    The Expert's Description

Aalborg Porse Snaps Dansk Akvavit is a Danish aquavit at 40% ABV from Aalborg Akvavit.

The Aalborg name dates back to 1846 and is one of the best-known in Danish aquavit tradition, today part of the Anora Group. Porse Snaps was launched in 1965 and is built on an extract of porse, also known as bog myrtle or sweet gale, harvested at Lille Vildmose in North Jutland, flavoured with sherry and rosemary distillate.

Porse has historically been used as a spice and preservative, and the plant gives the aquavit its distinctive herbal, fresh base note, while sherry and rosemary add depth.

About Aalborg

Aalborg isn't just one product but a whole universe of Danish aquavits, ranging from the classic, caraway-dominated Taffel Akvavit to spiced special editions like Jule-Aalborg and Jubilæums Akvavit. The range is so deeply rooted in Danish drinking culture that many Danes know no other snaps by name, and that breadth makes Aalborg an obvious entry point for beginners, while rarer vintage editions carry their own collector's value.

History & Background

The name comes from the Aalborg area in northern Jutland, historically the center of snaps production since 1846, when De Danske Spritfabrikker was established in the town. Over the years the brand has changed ownership several times and today belongs to the German spirits company Arcus, though production continues within the Aalborg tradition.

Production & Style

The aquavit is primarily spiced with caraway, giving the classic Taffel edition its characteristic clean profile, while other expressions add dill, citrus, or Christmas spices such as cinnamon and cloves. The base spirit is distilled from grain and aged briefly before the spicing is added, a process markedly different from whisky's long cask aging.

Signature Style

Caraway-Forward, Sharp, Spiced
The flavor offers a distinct caraway-forward, sharp character, with the Christmas editions adding warm spice notes.
