A dark bottle sits in the middle of the Christmas table, a woven heart in red and gold across its belly. The recipe has stayed put since 1982. The bottle gets a new coat every year, and this year's is number 45.
Expert's Description
Aalborg Jule Akvavit 2026 is a Danish Akvavit made from a distillate of caraway, dill and coriander seeds, bottled at 47%. It is No. 45 in the series of Aalborg's original Christmas Akvavit, first released in December 1982 and issued every Christmas since in a new bottle design. The label states that it is produced by Arcus Norway AS for Anora Denmark Spirits A/S. The Aalborg factory closed in 2015, and production moved to Norway.
This year's design pays tribute to the woven Christmas heart, and the bottle is an award-winning design made to decorate the table on its own. The gift box has been dropped to cut down on packaging. Inside, the recipe is the same as always: a high caraway content, with dill and coriander behind it. That makes for a rustic, forceful Akvavit that doesn't hide. The producer says it has won a gold medal and 95 points at the International Wines and Spirits Contest, and that it was named the world's best spirit in 2016.
Tasting Notes
Nose
Caraway comes first and is hard to miss. Citrus sits behind it, with a light floral edge.
Palate
Full-bodied and spicy, with caraway in front. Undertones of anise and citrus keep it from turning heavy, and it has good length.
Finish
Long and warm. Orange and almond step forward at the end, with a touch of citrus.

Did You Know?
47% is no random number. It equals 8 degrees spendrup, the unit used to measure alcohol in the late 1800s, and Aalborg Jule Akvavit still holds on to that old strength.
