Vecchio Florio

An Italian house from Sicily that has defined Marsala wine since the mid-1800s. Vecchio Florio carries the name of one of the families who put Marsala on the world map in its heyday, when the wine was shipped to courts and cargo holds across Europe. Marsala Vecchio Dry – Vecchio Florio (English translation)

Vecchio Florio Marsala Dry is a classic dry marsala with roots dating back to 1833, when the Florio family established their winery in Sicily. It was here they began producing the iconic oxidised fortified wine that has since become one of the island’s most renowned specialties – and an excellent alternative to both sherry and madeira. The Florio name gained even more recognition in the 20th century, when the family created the legendary Targa‑Florio motor race, which helped spread both the fame of marsala and the Florio brand internationally.

In the glass, the wine shows a beautiful amber‑gold colour with warm, glowing hues. The aroma is rich and expressive, offering notes of nuts, prunes, vanilla and dried fruit – classic hallmarks of a well‑aged marsala. Although the bouquet may suggest sweetness, this is a dry marsala with a fine balance of body, acidity and the characteristic oxidative depth.

The flavour is harmonious and elegant, with a dry, nutty profile, gentle spice and a rounded, warm finish. It is a wine that can be enjoyed on its own, used in cooking, or served with mature cheeses and desserts featuring nuts or dried fruit.

About Vecchio Florio

Vecchio Florio is an Italian house from Sicily, one of the most historic producers of Marsala wine. For the newcomer, Marsala is an overlooked category deserving more attention than just being a cooking wine. For the collector, Vecchio Florio matters because the Florio family historically helped turn Marsala into an international success on par with port and sherry, before the category lost ground in the 20th century.

History & Background

The house was founded in 1832 by the Florio family, who in the 1800s built an entire trading empire around Marsala wine, exporting to courts and cargo holds across Europe. The Florio name helped shape the wine's international reputation, before the house later became part of larger spirits and wine conglomerates.

Production & Style

The wine is made mainly from the Grillo grape variety and fortified, following the classic Marsala method from Sicily.
