In Jerez de la Frontera, rows of old sherry casks are stacked one above the other, each cask a little older than the next. It is here, in the traditional solera system, that Lustau lets its brandy grow deeper year by year, cask by cask.
Expert's Description
Lustau Solera Gran Reserva is a Spanish Brandy de Jerez, matured in former sherry casks through the traditional solera system, bottled at 40%.
The house's history dates back to 1896, when José Ruiz-Berdejo, a court secretary in Jerez, began growing vines in his spare time on the family estate Nuestra Señora de la Esperanza. His daughter María Ruiz-Berdejo and her husband Emilio Lustau Ortega later carried the business forward and developed it further, with Emilio focusing seriously on export and quality. Today Bodegas Lustau is one of the most respected names within Brandy de Jerez, based in Jerez de la Frontera.
Gran Reserva is the deepest and most concentrated expression in the house's brandy range. Through the classic criaderas y solera system, the brandy is gradually moved through rows of casks that previously held sherry, giving it a marked aromatic complexity and a depth that takes time to build.
In the glass, the brandy is dark mahogany with a warm, amber glow — a visual promise of the depth waiting in the next sip.

Did You Know?
Did you know that the word solera comes from the Spanish suelo, meaning floor or ground? The name refers to the lowest and oldest row of casks in the system, from which the brandy is finally drawn, while new spirit is continuously added to the top rows and slowly blends downward over the years.
