About Woodford Reserve Whiskey

Woodford Reserve is made by Brown-Forman at a distillery originally founded in 1797 by Elijah Pepper as the Old Oscar Pepper Distillery, and today designated a National Historic Landmark. The distillery stands out for still using triple distillation on copper pot stills, a slower and costlier method than the column distillation most bourbons rely on, producing a rich, complex flavour with citrus, cinnamon and chocolate. Collectors find the annual Master's Collection releases interesting experiments in wood and grain, while newcomers meet one of the most elegant, well-balanced bourbons on the market.

History & Background

The distillery was founded in 1797 by Elijah Pepper, whose son Oscar later hired the Scottish-trained distiller James Crow, whose scientific approach to fermentation laid the groundwork for much of modern bourbon production. The site changed hands several times through the 20th century until Brown-Forman bought the historic property in 1993 and invested heavily in reviving the original copper pot stills and triple distillation. Woodford Reserve launched as a brand in 1996 and has since become Brown-Forman's flagship bourbon, winning gold medals at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition in 2011, 2012 and 2014.
