Campari Bitter

In 1860, Gaspare Campari invented a bitter in Novara whose fiery red colour is today just as iconic as the Eiffel Tower is to Paris. Campari became Italian design history in a bottle, long before anyone called it a 'lifestyle brand'.

    Item no.: 22227865479-7131

From a cafe in the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele in Milan, overlooking Piazza Duomo, one man brewed a red drink so recognisable it has since become one of the world's most imitated colour codes.

    Expert's description

Campari is an Italian bitter from Milan at 25% ABV, bottled at 70 cl.

The recipe was created in 1860 by Gaspare Campari, born in 1828 in Cassolnovo in Lombardy. Campari ran his business from Caffe Campari in the newly built Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II in Milan, overlooking Piazza Duomo, where the distinctive red drink quickly became an institution. The recipe is secret and built on more than 60 natural ingredients, including herbs, spices, bark and fruit peels. In 1904 production moved to Sesto San Giovanni, where Campari Group is still headquartered today, and his son Davide Campari carried the legacy forward. The bitter is now essential in cocktails such as the Negroni and Americano.

Some bottles never get opened, yet they still carry a story every time they land on a shelf. This is one of them — an old, sealed bottle of Campari Bitter, pulled from an era when cocktail recipes were printed straight onto the label, and when "Ausländisches Erzeugnis" was the stamp that told German consumers they were holding the real Italian thing.

    Expert's Description

This Campari Bitter is an Italian herb-based aperitif liqueur from Davide Campari Milano, bottled at 25% ABV for the German export market, most likely during the 1960s or 1970s.

The bottle carries the older label reading "Fratelli Campari Successori" and "Davide Campari Milano," and the back of the label prints four classic serving suggestions in German — Campari with soda, Campari with orange juice, Campari on the rocks, and Campari Shakerato. Beneath the cap sits a gold-trimmed foil reading "Davide Campari Milano," a detail typical of Italian export bottlings from that period.

Distribution to the German market was handled by Campari Deutschland GmbH in Munich, clearly stated on the label alongside the era's German import mark, "Ausländisches Erzeugnis." The cap is the old metal screw type, and the bottle appears to be an original, unopened vintage example.

The recipe behind Campari has stayed largely unchanged since Gaspare Campari first put it together in Milan in 1860 — an infusion of herbs, fruit peels, and spices, with only a handful of people at the company knowing the full formula.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Bitter orange peel, quinine bark, and a faint caramel sweetness woven through herbal, slightly medicinal notes.

    Palate

A firm quinine bitterness balanced by sweetness and a sharp citrus core, with hints of rhubarb, juniper, and a spicy warmth underneath.

    Finish

Long and bitter, trailing off with orange peel and a dry, herbal edge.

About Campari Bitter

Campari is an Italian bitter, invented in 1860 by Gaspare Campari and today one of the world's most recognisable spirits brands. For newcomers it's the bitter behind classics like the Negroni and Spritz; for collectors it's notable that the fiery red colour and secret herbal blend have made Campari an icon well beyond the bar world, closely tied to Italian design history and the celebrated artistic calendar the brand has published since the 1990s.

History & background

The bitter was originally developed in Novara in northern Italy by Gaspare Campari, who had worked as a confectioner and liqueur maker before arriving at the secret composition of herbs, plants and fruit peels that still defines its flavour today. Shortly after its invention, production moved to Milan, where the brand truly took off and became a fixture of the city's café culture. His son Davide Campari later took over the business and made marketing central to its strategy, including artistic posters from renowned artists that cemented Campari's status as a design icon. Today Campari is a global spirits giant, but the bitter is still made to the same secret recipe.

Production & style

The bitter is made from a secret blend of herbs, plants, and fruit peels, macerated in alcohol and water.

Signature style

Bitter, Citrus, Herbal
