Miltonduff Whisky

Miltonduff sits on land where monks from Pluscarden Abbey once milled grain, and where smugglers reportedly ran up to fifty illicit stills through the winding Glen of Pluscarden in the 1800s. Today the distillery is one of the quiet workhorses behind Ballantine's - but in the right bottles, Miltonduff proves it can be far more than blend filler.

  • Miltonduff Gordon MacPhail Speyside whisky bottle
    Item no.: 22227865438-123

On the edge of Elgin, where the barley fields stretch toward the Moray Firth, Miltonduff has been distilling since 1824 – mostly for Ballantine's, rarely under its own name.

    Expert's Description

Miltonduff 10 Year Old Gordon & MacPhail is a Single Speyside Malt Scotch Whisky, bottled by the renowned family-owned independent bottler Gordon & MacPhail at 43%.

Gordon & MacPhail has matured whisky from across Scotland in its own casks in Elgin since 1895, just a few kilometres from the Miltonduff distillery, giving the company unique insight into how this particular malt develops over time.

  • Miltonduff Glenlivet Malt whisky bottle 1980s release
    Item no.: 2222438-3555

Miltonduff is one of those distilleries that works mostly behind the scenes, carrying Ballantine's forward while occasionally letting a cask out under its own name.

Note: This bottle is an older release from the late 1980s, so minor signs of age may appear on the label or capsule.

    Expert's Description

Miltonduff 12 Year Old Glenlivet Malt Scotch Whisky is a late-1980s Speyside malt, bottled under the historic "Glenlivet Malt" designation at 43%.

Until the 1980s, several Speyside whiskies, including Miltonduff, were marketed with "Glenlivet" added to the label to signal regional origin – a practice now prohibited, which makes this bottle a piece of whisky history in its own right.

    Tasting Notes

    Item no.: 22227865438-337

There is something rebellious about a Miltonduff that steps out of the Chivas blending vats to stand alone in the glass.

Note: This older bottle may show minor signs of age just below the label and a scratch on the box.

    Expert's Description

Miltonduff 12 Year Old Glenlivet Malt Scotch Whisky in the 70cl format is a late-1980s Speyside malt, bottled under the historic "Glenlivet Malt" designation at 43%.

Like its smaller 50cl sibling, this bottle dates from a time when several Speyside distilleries added "Glenlivet" to the label to signal regional origin – a practice since prohibited, making this 70cl release a rare piece of whisky history.

Speyside hides several distilleries that work quietly in the background. Miltonduff is one of them, and when it appears solo, it is worth noticing.

    Expert's Description

Miltonduff 12 Year Old Version 1 Glenlivet Malt Scotch Whisky is an early 1980s label version, bottled at 43%.

The designation "Old Version 1" refers to the earliest of several known label designs from the same period, when Miltonduff was sold under the Glenlivet name. For collectors of older Speyside whisky, this release represents an early chapter of that story.

    Expert's Description

Miltonduff 1982/2023 Adelphi Limited 40 Year Old is a Single Speyside Malt Scotch Whisky matured in a first fill sherry hogshead and bottled at cask strength 50.4%.

Distilled in 1982 and bottled in 2023, this whisky has spent 40 years in cask, giving it a light golden colour and a thoroughly old-fashioned elegance. Only 224 bottles were released by independent bottler Adelphi, known for its uncompromising approach to cask selection.

The long maturation has rounded the whisky's character into something velvety, where mineral notes, paraffin and oily lemon meet cooked fruit and a touch of white pepper in the long finish.

About Miltonduff Whisky

Miltonduff isn't a name you'll see on every whisky shelf, and that's exactly what makes it interesting. The distillery produces mainly for Ballantine's famous blends, but its rarer single malt releases - often from independent bottlers - reveal a light, floral Speyside style that deserves more attention. Especially intriguing is Mosstowie, a rare single malt distilled on Miltonduff's two Lomond stills, which for decades circulated almost exclusively among connoisseurs before interest in forgotten Speyside gems picked up again.

History & Background

Miltonduff was founded in 1824 by Robert Bain and Andrew Peary, shortly after that year's Excise Act made legal whisky production attractive. The distillery was named after a former illicit still called Milton, with the suffix added for the Duff family, who owned the land. After Hiram Walker Gooderham and Worts acquired Ballantine's in 1935, the need for a stable malt whisky supply became clear, and Miltonduff was bought the following year. The distillery is now part of Chivas Brothers, after Pernod Ricard took over parent company Allied in 2005.

Production & Style

Miltonduff's core production runs on traditional pot stills, giving a light, clean spirit ideally suited as a blending component. In 1964, two special Lomond stills with a wider, cylindrical neck were installed - stills now used almost exclusively for Mosstowie production. The two still types give the distillery a flexibility few other Speyside sites can match, even though most of the output never appears outside a Ballantine's bottle.

Signature Style

Light, Floral, Fresh
A gentle, grassy sweetness meets light fruit and a touch of flowers - a style built for elegance rather than power.

For Collectors

The Mosstowie releases from Miltonduff's Lomond stills have become a niche for collectors chasing Speyside malts with a profile quite different from what the distillery is known for in blends.

Did You Know?

Did you know Miltonduff was built on the site of Pluscarden Abbey's old mill - a Benedictine priory founded in 1236 that, after centuries of closure, reopened as a monastery in 1948, just a couple of kilometres from the distillery?
