First Edition Whisky

First Edition is the name a son carried with him as he stepped out of his father's shadow. Andrew Laing, raised in the whisky family behind Douglas Laing, started his own firm to prove that good genes and a good ear for a cask can go hand in hand.

  • Braeval The First Edition bottle with black label
    Item no.: 059763-615-6557

62 percent is not a number you hand anyone unprepared. In return nothing has been filtered out, no colour added and no water poured in — you get the contents of the cask as they were when the bung came off.

    Expert description

Braeval 2009 The First Edition 14 Years is a Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky from a Refill Oloroso Butt, bottled at cask strength, 62%, without chill filtration and without added colour.

The First Edition is the series from Andrew Laing and Edition Spirits, where single casks from across Scotland are selected and bottled without compromise. Andrew Laing is the son of Stewart Laing and carries the family tradition of independent bottling forward under his own name.

Braeval is a high-lying Speyside distillery whose spirit is light and floral. Fourteen years in a refill oloroso butt adds nut and dried fruit without covering the spirit, and the high strength makes the profile dense and concentrated.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Dried apricot and walnut with pale honey, cinnamon and a stroke of freshly cut oak.

    Palate

Dense and spiced with raisin, almond and baked apple. The alcohol is pronounced, but the fruit holds its ground.

    Finish

Very long and dry with nuts, spice and a warm oak note.

  • Glengoyne The First Editions 15 year bottle with black label and cask number
    Item no.: 059763-615-681

Same distillery and same vintage as the Old Malt Cask release, but no water has been added here. 57.7% is where the cask stood when it was emptied.

    The expert's description

Glengoyne 2007/2023 The First Edition is a Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky from a single refill hogshead, bottled at cask strength 57.7%.

The cask carries the number HL20035 and gave 319 bottles after fifteen years. A hogshead holds around 250 litres, half the size of a butt, which is why the outturn is smaller than the Old Malt Cask release from the same year.

The First Editions is the Hunter Laing range of single casks at full cask strength. The whisky is non-chill filtered and of natural colour, so it reaches the glass exactly as it left the cask.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Barley, citrus peel and vanilla with a sharp, clean malted note. The cask strength pushes the aroma forward.

    Palate

Powerful and dry with green apple, malt and white pepper. The 57.7% brings warmth, but the light character of the spirit still shows through.

    Finish

Long, warm and dry with malt, nuts and spiced oak.

About First Edition Whisky

First Edition is a series from Edition Spirits Ltd., founded by Andrew Laing, son of Stewart Laing of the Douglas Laing family, as an independent continuation of generations of whisky trading experience. The series consists of single-cask bottlings from across Scotland, always uncoloured and unfiltered and often at cask strength, and the labels deliberately omit tasting notes to let the drinker form their own opinion. Collectors are drawn especially to releases from Scotland's lesser-known distilleries, while newcomers get a clean, unfiltered whisky without marketing dressing.

History & Background

Andrew Laing grew up in one of Scotland's most whisky-savvy families as the son of Stewart Laing, who ran Douglas Laing & Co. together with his brother Fred before the firm split in 2013. Rather than joining the family's established firms directly, Andrew chose to start his own company, Edition Spirits Ltd., and launched First Edition as his own series, built on the same knowledge of cask selection he had learned at home. The series has since established itself as another name in the long line of Laing-connected independent bottlers that together define much of the Scottish single-cask market.

History & Background

Hunter Laing was founded by Stewart Laing following a split from the previous family firm Douglas Laing, and the First Edition range was created as an accessible entry point into single cask whisky from various Scottish distilleries.

Production & Style

Each cask is selected individually from named Scottish distilleries and bottled without added coloring, often at natural strength, to preserve the original character.

Signature Style

Versatile, Authentic, Distillery-Driven
The flavor varies considerably depending on the individual distillery, but an authentic, uncolored approach runs throughout.
