Lough Gill Brewery

By the shores of the lake that poet W.B. Yeats immortalised in his verses about Innisfree, a small Irish brewery makes some of the country's most powerful, cask-driven stouts. Lough Gill is poetry turned into dark beer.

Expert description of Lough Gill Spear Barrel Aged Series 2024

Lough Gill Spear Barrel Aged Series 2024 Irish Imperial Oatmeal Stout is a heavy, full-bodied and deeply complex specialty beer, where Irish stout tradition meets the power of whisky barrels from Boann Distillery. It comes in a 33cl can at 13%, giving a warm, round and almost liqueur-like experience.

As an imperial oatmeal stout, it's built on dark malts, roasted character and the soft, creamy mouthfeel that oats provide. The barrel ageing gives clear layers of vanilla, oak, caramel and a mild whisky warmth that ties the beer together elegantly.

Lough Gill is an Irish brewery that has specialised in barrel-aged specialty releases, where local whisky distilleries like Boann contribute used barrels to the brewery's most powerful beers.

About Lough Gill Brewery

Lough Gill Brewery is an Irish microbrewery from County Sligo, named after the nearby Lough Gill lake. The brewery is especially known for its heavy, cask-aged stouts at 12-14%, which are often matured in collaboration with Irish distilleries like Boann, giving the beers a marked whiskey-driven depth of vanilla, oak and spice. With layer upon layer of chocolate, coffee and caramel, rounded off by a soft, creamy mouthfeel, Lough Gill's stouts rank among the most powerful and characterful craft beers coming out of Ireland today.

History & Background

Lough Gill Brewery is named after Lough Gill in County Sligo, a place immortalized in poet W.B. Yeats' famous poem about the isle of Innisfree. The brewery is part of the Irish craft beer wave that really gathered pace in the 2010s, as a new generation of brewers began challenging the big, established Irish beer brands. The setting in the scenic northwest of Ireland is a central part of the brewery's identity. Lough Gill brews a range that draws on both classic styles and more modern, hop-forward beers.
