Taddy Porter is one of the classics that has followed Samuel Smith through generations - a dark, dry porter built for slow drinking, ideally with a cup of coffee alongside.

Expert description of Samuel Smith Taddy Porter

Samuel Smith Taddy Porter is the brewery's take on the classic English porter style, brewed at Yorkshire's oldest brewery in Tadcaster since 1758. The beer offers fine notes of liquorice and chocolate, with an almost whipped-cream-like head that gives a soft first impression before a fresh bitterness steps in and balances the dry finish.

It is a porter made for quiet moments rather than grand celebrations - a solid, well-balanced beer rooted in British brewing craft, where dryness and bitterness keep the sweetness of chocolate and liquorice in check.

About Samuel Smith

Samuel Smith Old Brewery in Tadcaster is Yorkshire's oldest brewery and one of the most tradition-bound in all of England. The brewery is known for its insistence on old methods - including the famous "Yorkshire Square" fermentation system - producing beers that still taste of the same craft tradition that has defined the house for more than 250 years.

History & Background

The brewery was founded in 1758 in Tadcaster, a town that has historically housed several breweries thanks to its pure spring water. Samuel Smith took over the brewery in 1847, and the Ecclestone-Petty family, who have owned the company since the 1980s, have maintained an almost ascetic approach to traditional brewing - still without advertising, without an online shop, and with a continued insistence on craft over mass production.

Production & Style

The water is drawn from the brewery's own 85-metre-deep well, and fermentation takes place in traditional "Yorkshire Squares" made of Yorkshire stone - stone vessels that give the beer a distinctive mineral purity. The beer is still delivered in part by horse-drawn dray in Tadcaster.

Signature Style

Malty, Full-bodied, Classic
From the creamy Oatmeal Stout to the rich Imperial Stout and the amber-hued Taddy Porter, the style is always full-bodied, malt-forward and touched with roasted character.
