St. Bernardus Craft Beer

A Belgian brewery that has spent decades brewing abbey beer close to the classic Trappist style, without itself being a monastery. St. Bernardus still uses recipes that historically trace back to the monks of Saint Sixtus, and the result is a beer with an authority rarely found outside the actual Trappist breweries. This is beer that tastes of tradition without feeling like a museum piece.

  • Magnum bottle of St. Bernardus Abt 12 Magnum Edition 2013, 150 cl
    Item no.: 24798099-56

While most quadrupels are drunk fresh, this 2013 vintage of St. Bernardus Abt 12 has been allowed to mature in the bottle for over a decade - a rare chance to taste time itself in the beer.

About St. Bernardus Craft Beer

St. Bernardus is a Belgian brewery known for its classic abbey beers, closely aligned with the traditional Trappist style. For the newcomer, St. Bernardus is a natural way into Belgian abbey beer - accessible, easy-drinking, yet complex enough to open your eyes to the category. For the collector, the story of the brewery's close ties to the Saint Sixtus monastery (and the recipe that once underpinned Westvleteren itself) is what makes St. Bernardus more than just another Belgian beer - it's a piece of living Trappist history, available without the monastery's restricted sales.

History & Background

The brewery's roots go back to 1946 and it has historical ties to the Saint Sixtus monastery, whose recipes laid the foundation for the brewery's style. For many years St. Bernardus actually brewed beer under licence for the monastery, until the partnership ended in 1992, after which the brewery continued with its own versions of the classic recipes under its own name. The town of Watou, where the brewery is located, borders France and has historically been a hub for Belgian brewing, and St. Bernardus has since maintained its position as one of the most respected - if non-Trappist - producers of abbey beer in Belgium.

Production & Style

The beers ferment with a characteristic Belgian yeast strain that produces fruity esters and spicy phenols typical of classic abbey style.

Signature Style

Fruity, Spicy, Full-Bodied
The flavor offers a complex balance of fruit, spice, and a warm, malty base.
