Silver Seal Rum

An Italian collector hunts the world's forgotten casks - and finds them. Silver Seal is the name whisky and rum enthusiasts whisper when the talk turns to rare, independent bottlings with cask strength and character. Every bottle is a small archaeological find from a cask others had overlooked.

  • Bottle of Demerara Port Mourant 13 Year Silver Seal rum
    Item no.: 22227865416-401

Only two original wooden distillation stills of this kind still exist in the world. One of them is called Port Mourant, and every year it produces becomes rarer.

    Expert description

Demerara Port Mourant 13 Year is a Rum from Guyana, distilled on the iconic Port Mourant wooden double pot still in 2003, matured for 13 years and bottled at 51% from cask number 36.

The rum is released by the Italian bottler Silver Seal, founded in 2000 by Massimo Righi, and is part of an extremely limited series of only 255 bottles. The Port Mourant still is one of the last two original wooden distillation stills left in the world and has for over 250 years produced the classic "Demerara Navy Rum," originally for the British Navy. The distillate is known for its deep, powerful aroma and is still used today as a cornerstone in many of the world's most respected rum blends.

Sixteen years in Scotland after distillation in Jamaica – a journey that gives the rum an entirely distinctive, funky character.

    Expert description

Sample 3 cl Long Pond Distillery 2000/2016 Silver Seal 16 Year is a Jamaica Rum distilled at the Long Pond distillery in 2000, bottled by the Italian bottler Silver Seal in 2016 and released at 51% in a small 3 cl sample format.

Because the rum spent all 16 years maturing in Scotland's temperate climate after being shipped from Jamaica, it develops a different, more restrained cask influence than rum matured entirely in the tropics. Long Pond is known for its "funky", ester-rich style, and the long maturation gives this particular release a complexity that draws on the best of both climates.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Banana, papaya and lemon with a tangy ester character and a syrupy sweetness.

    Palate

Spiced with cumin, bacon, clove and ester, complemented by a touch of molasses.

    Finish

Funky with nutmeg and a metallic undertone.

Long Pond is one of the only distilleries in the world still producing ultra-ester-rich "funky" Jamaican rum using traditional methods, where long fermentation times create aromas many other distilleries gave up trying to replicate long ago.

About Silver Seal

Silver Seal is an Italian independent bottler specialising in rare, old rum and whisky casks from around the world. For the newcomer the name may seem unfamiliar next to the big rum houses, but that's precisely the point; for the collector, Silver Seal is one of the most respected names in independent bottling, known for tracking down rare casks and bottling them without unnecessary interference, often in extremely limited runs.

History & Background

Silver Seal was established in Italy by enthusiasts with a passion for rare and forgotten spirit casks, in a tradition close to the Scottish independent bottlers but with a particular focus on rum from the Caribbean and Latin America. Over the decades the company has built a reputation for tracking down casks that would otherwise have been lost or blended into anonymous large batches, and bottling them as standalone, numbered releases. Today Silver Seal is regarded as one of the more niche, yet highly respected, names among spirits collectors worldwide.

Production & Style

The rums are selected as single casks or small batches from respected distilleries in Guyana, Jamaica and Panama among others, and are typically bottled unfiltered without added colouring.

Signature Style

Cask Strength, Unfiltered, Rare
Each bottling has its own personality, but common to all is a clean, raw-material-true style where the cask and distillate character speak without embellishment.
