It is aged for 4 years and achieves its characteristic flavor and roundness by aging in American oak barrels that are internally charred. Templeton Rye 4 years old has been named Rye Whiskey of the Year and won a gold medal at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition. The nose is full-bodied with aromas of both oak and grass. The taste is very smooth with notes of butterscotch, toffee, vanilla and pepper. The finish is long and well-balanced. Templeton Rye was introduced in 2006 by Scott Bush, Keith Kerkhoff and Ted Bauer and is named after the town of Templeton, Iowa, where a homemade rye whiskey achieved local legend status during Prohibition, reportedly as one of Al Capone's favourites. The whiskey is today distilled and aged by MGP in Indiana but still bottled in Iowa, and has an unusually sweet, soft style for a rye, with notes of caramel, butterscotch and allspice.
