Del Maguey Mezcal

Del Maguey is the mezcal that truly opened America's eyes to the category, and the Single Village name still stands as a mark of quality. Every bottling comes from one specific village in Oaxaca and carries its own distinct character.

By the Red Ant River in San Luis del Rio, Oaxaca, sits one of the palenques that, thirty years ago, helped introduce the word mezcal to an audience outside Mexico. Del Maguey Vida is where that story still begins for many drinkers today.

    Expert Description

Del Maguey Mezcal Vida is a Mexican Single Village Mezcal at 42% ABV, made from 100% Agave Espadín in the village of San Luis del Rio, Oaxaca.

Del Maguey was founded in 1995 by American artist Ron Cooper, widely credited with sparking serious interest in high-quality mezcal outside Mexico. The Vida expression is crafted by palenquero Paciano Cruz Nolasco and designed as an entry point into Del Maguey's wider world of village-specific mezcals.

The mash is naturally fermented and twice distilled in wood-fired copper stills, after which the mezcal goes straight into the bottle with no cask ageing, preserving the agave's pure character.

About Del Maguey Mezcal

Del Maguey is the pioneer that, in the mid-1990s, turned mezcal into something more than a shot with a worm in the bottle. The brand bottles each village's mezcal separately rather than blending them, so you can taste the difference between, say, Chichicapa and Santo Domingo Albarradas directly in the glass. That makes Del Maguey one of the most respected names among bartenders and collectors interested in mezcal's terroir.

History & Background

Behind the brand is American artist Ron Cooper, who fell for the homemade mezcal of small villages during his travels in Mexico in the 1990s and decided the world deserved to taste it beyond tequila's generic image. In 1995 he launched Del Maguey as the first single-village mezcal on the US market, a model that has since become the standard for quality mezcal. In 2017 Pernod Ricard bought a majority stake in the brand, though production still rests with the villages' own palenqueros.

Production & Style

The agave, mainly Espadín, is roasted in earthen pits and traditionally crushed with horse-drawn stone or wooden mills before the juice ferments with wild yeast and is distilled in copper stills. Because each village has its own soil, water and craft tradition, the flavour varies markedly from bottling to bottling.

Signature Style

Smoky, Mineral, Rustic
The entry-level Vida is clean and clear with distinct smoke and citrus, while the rarer village bottlings range from fruity and floral to intense, mineral smoke depending on agave and soil.
