Wemyss Single Malt Whisky

The Wemyss family has lived in the same castle by the Firth of Forth for over 600 years, long before any of them dreamed of putting their name on a whisky. Today they name their bottles after flavour rather than distillery, because they believe whisky should be understood through the nose, not through a map.

  • Bottle of Glenrothes 17 Year Old Wemyss Buttered Tealoaf whisky
    Item no.: 22227865391-314

Wemyss Malts name their single cask bottlings after flavour rather than distillery – this 17 year old Glenrothes has been named "Buttered Tealoaf", and that's no accident.

    Expert's Description

Glenrothes 1997/2014 Buttered Tealoaf is a Single Cask Speyside Malt Whisky with only 384 bottles, bottled by the family-owned whisky merchant Wemyss Malts, who over many years have built an extensive portfolio of casks from almost every distillery in Scotland.

Each of Wemyss' single cask bottlings is given a name referring to flavour notes and aromas identified by their tasting panel – including whisky expert Charles Maclean, author and member of the Master of the Quaich.

About Wemyss Single Malt Whisky

Wemyss Malts was created by the Wemyss family, whose connection to the whisky industry dates back to the early 1800s, when John Haig built his first distillery on the family's land near Wemyss Castle. The firm operates as what the wine industry calls a "negociant": they select, blend and bottle a small quantity of very fine casks, chosen by a Nosing Panel led by acclaimed whisky writer Charlie Maclean, and name each bottling after its flavour profile rather than the distillery. Collectors are drawn to this unique naming approach, combined with a strict wood policy limited to first- and second-fill casks, while newcomers get a more intuitive way to navigate the world of whisky.

History & Background

The Wemyss family's connection to whisky began when John Haig, founder of the later world-famous Haig brand, built his first distillery in the early 1800s on land belonging to the family near their home, Wemyss Castle, which has been the family seat for over 600 years. The name, pronounced "Weems", comes from the Gaelic word for caves, a reference to the rock formations along the coast at the Firth of Forth, where the castle stands. With generations of experience in wine production, the family more recently decided to channel their passion for whisky into an independent bottling business, carrying the quality-conscious tradition of the wine world directly into cask selection.

History & Background

The Wemyss family has roots in Scottish estate and wine trading, and the house opened its own distillery, Kingsbarns, in 2014.

Production & Style

The whisky is partly distilled at Kingsbarns and partly selected cask by cask from other distilleries, always unfiltered and without added color.

Signature Style

Fruity, Floral, Cask-Driven
The flavor typically offers a fruity, floral character, often paired with a poetic name describing that exact profile.
