Gordon & MacPhail Whisky

From a grocer's shop in Elgin in 1895 to the world's leading single malt whisky specialist. Gordon & MacPhail has bottled whisky under the Urquhart family's wing for over 125 years.

  • Ardbeg 1994/2004 Connoisseurs Choice Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky bottle
    Item no.: 505956-105768-6

An independent bottling from one of the whisky world's oldest and most respected bottlers, a world apart from Ardbeg's own labels.

    Expert Review

Ardbeg 1994/2004 Connoisseurs Choice 10 Year Old is an Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky bottled by Gordon & MacPhail at 40%.

Connoisseurs Choice is Gordon & MacPhail's classic series of independent bottlings, where the whisky is distilled at the named distillery but selected and bottled by the bottler itself. This release was distilled in 1994 and bottled in 2004 after 10 years of maturation, giving a different expression than Ardbeg's own official releases.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Classic Islay peat at a calmer, more restrained pace than the more powerful official bottlings, with a light maritime freshness.

    Palate

Gentle smoke and peat balanced by a dry, malt-forward sweetness, characteristic of Gordon & MacPhail's style.

    Finish

Mild and dry, with a lingering smoky finish.

  • Auchroisk 10 year old Gordon & MacPhail Discovery bottle, Single Speyside Malt Scotch Whisky
    Item no.: 22227865479-1106-1975

The Discovery range is built like a textbook. Three profiles, bourbon, sherry and smoke, and the rest of the label keeps quiet. You have to work out for yourself what a bourbon cask does to a Speyside, and that is the whole point.

    The Expert's Description

Auchroisk 10 Years Old Gordon & MacPhail Discovery is a Single Speyside Malt Scotch Whisky matured in 1st fill and refill bourbon casks and bottled at 43%. It belongs to the bourbon category in the Discovery range, which highlights three fundamental whisky profiles.

Gordon & MacPhail is among Scotland’s oldest and most respected independent bottlers, and the Discovery range is the house’s entry point for anyone wanting to understand what the cask does. By using bourbon wood only, Auchroisk’s bright citrus-driven spirit is allowed to stand out clearly without sherry or smoke clouding the picture.

Auchroisk was built in 1974 by Justerini & Brooks to supply malt for the J&B blend. The result here is a fresh, fruity whisky that works equally well for beginners and for experienced drinkers wanting to meet Speyside in its purest bourbon matured form.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Vanilla first, followed by apple, lemon blossom and ripe bananas. A light pastry note runs beneath it all, along with a clean, fresh cereal character the bourbon casks have brought out rather than covered.

    Palate

Lively notes of orange peel and black pepper open, then tropical fruit and a soft vanilla sweetness arrive. At 43% the body is good, and the whisky stays fresh all the way without turning thin.

    Finish

Medium and rounded with oak and spice, where the citrus note lingers longest.

    Did You Know?

Gordon & MacPhail has been bottling whisky since 1895 and has spent decades holding casks from distilleries long since closed. The house is known for filling its own casks at the distilleries rather than buying finished whisky, which gives control over the wood from day one. That is why their oldest bottlings are so sought after.

  • Aultmore 10 year old Gordon & MacPhail Discovery bottle, Single Speyside Malt Scotch Whisky
    Item no.: 22227865413-440

Aultmore drew its water from the Foggie Moss, a misty marsh where smugglers of old could work unseen. The distillery chose the site for practical reasons, but the name stuck.

    The Expert's Description

Aultmore 10 Years Old Gordon & MacPhail Discovery is a Single Speyside Malt Scotch Whisky matured in 1st fill and refill bourbon casks and bottled at 43%. It belongs to the bourbon profile in the Discovery range.

Aultmore was built in 1896 by Alexander Edward, and production started on 24 May 1897. The distillery sits by the Burn of Auchinderran north of Keith, a stream known locally as the Foggie Moss.

John Dewar & Sons bought Aultmore in 1923 for £20,000, and since then by far the greater part of production has gone into Dewar’s White Label. Official single malts are therefore rare, and independent casks like this one are the usual way in.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Fresh and grassy. Apple and pear first, then vanilla, a light honeyed sweetness and a dry, mineral note typical of the distillery.

    Palate

Clean and light. Apple and citrus open, then vanilla, a dry cereal note and a touch of pepper arrive. At 43% the body is fine, and the whisky stays fresh all the way.

    Finish

Medium and clean. Apple, vanilla and a dry, lightly grassy close.

    Did You Know?

Aultmore was for decades largely invisible to consumers, because almost the entire production went to blending. Behind the bar in pubs around Keith, however, the whisky became known as a nip of the Buttery, and that nickname lingered long after the bottles had vanished from the shelves.

  • Bladnoch 1987 Connoisseurs Choice bottle with map label
    Item no.: 505956-759824-20

Distilled in 1987, bottled in 1999. Between those two dates Bladnoch changed hands, fell silent and was restarted — and the whisky simply waited in the cask, none the wiser.

Please note: The bottle is sold without its original box.

    Expert description

Bladnoch 1987/1999 Connoisseurs Choice 12 Years is a Single Lowland Malt Scotch Whisky bottled at 40% by Gordon & MacPhail.

Connoisseurs Choice is Gordon & MacPhail's oldest and best known series of independent bottlings, and the early releases with the map label are sought after in their own right today. The series has historically been the route to whisky from distilleries that were either closed or released nothing themselves.

The 1987 Bladnoch spirit dates from the years under Bell's and later United Distillers, that is, before the modern rebuilding of the distillery. It is a pale, classic Lowland style that would hardly be made the same way now.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Pale and clean with grain, hay and lemon peel. Given time, pear and a light waxiness come forward.

    Palate

Soft and dry with malt, white fruit and a touch of almond. 40% keeps it light, but there is a maturity in the middle that only time provides.

    Finish

Short to medium, dry and grainy with a trace of oak.

    Expert description

Bladnoch 1987/1999 Gordon & MacPhail Connoisseurs Choice 12 Years is a Single Lowland Malt Whisky bottled at 40%.

The release carries the map label Gordon & MacPhail used on Connoisseurs Choice for a number of years and retired in the 2000s. The whisky was distilled in 1987 and bottled in 1999 after twelve years in cask.

Bladnoch was producing in that period under Bell's and United Distillers, and the spirit is made in the pale, classic Lowland style. After 1993 the distillery stood idle for long stretches, which has left the 1980s vintages thin on the ground.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Clean and grainy with hay, apple blossom and a pale citrus note.

    Palate

Soft, dry and light. Malt, green fruit and a fine waxy texture typical of the period.

    Finish

Medium and dry with grain and a faint suggestion of oak.

    Expert's Description

Bunnahabhain 11 Years Old Gordon & MacPhail The Discovery Range is a Single Malt Scotch Whisky matured in sherry casks and bottled at 43%.

The Discovery Range is Gordon & MacPhail's accessible entry point into their archive of Scottish single casks, and this 11 Years Old Bunnahabhain was chosen for its sweetness and easy drinking style. The sherry casks have given the whisky a warm caramel hue and a full sweep of spice.

It's a mild, unpeated take on Islay – a fine place to start if you want to understand why Bunnahabhain is often called the island's quiet exception.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

    Item no.: 22227865363-8104

Gordon & MacPhail created the Discovery Range as a gateway to three styles: Sherry, Bourbon and Smoky. Caol Ila is – as one would expect – the Smoky expression. Thirteen years and 43% mean the smoke is accessible and rounded rather than edgy.

    Expert's description

Caol Ila 13 Years Gordon & MacPhail The Discovery Range is an Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky bottled at 43% – the third line in the Discovery Range series under the Smoky theme.

Gordon & MacPhail from Elgin is one of the world's oldest and most respected independent bottlers, founded in 1895. The Discovery Range is the company's most approachable series – created to give new and existing whisky drinkers access to classic regional characters without compromise.

Thirteen years in oak casks have given this Caol Ila a rounded, accessible smoke profile. It retains the distillery's maritime signature, but the lower strength of 43% makes it easy to enjoy without adding water.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Fresh maritime notes lead – sea salt and seaweed. Then light peat smoke with citrus and a hint of vanilla.

    Palate

Round and accessible. Smoke and freshness dominate with a light fruit sweetness and good balance. Lightly spiced with pepper in the tail.

    Finish

Moderate and clean. The smoke recedes gently with a maritime trace and a lightness that invites another sip.

Dallas Dhu stopped production in 1983 and was never demolished. The distillery stands today as a museum with all the equipment in place — but without a drop of new spirit since the Thatcher years.

    Expert description

Dallas Dhu 12 years Gordon & MacPhail is a Highland Malt Scotch Whisky bottled at 40%.

The distillery sits near Forres and closed in 1983 during the great wave of closures, when overproduction brought a string of Scottish houses to their knees. The buildings were preserved and are run today as a museum, which makes Dallas Dhu one of the few places you can walk through a complete distillery that no longer produces. Gordon & MacPhail in Elgin has bottled whisky from across Scotland since 1895 and is among the most important sources of bottles from closed distilleries.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Soft and malty. Honey, dried apple and cereal, with a dusty note from the years in glass.

    Palate

Round and light. Malt, honey and pale caramel, with a touch of spice and a mild oak note. The 40% keeps it easy to approach.

  • Glenburgie 8 Year Old Gordon & MacPhail old bottle with white neck band
    Item no.: 505956-807534-868

A white band around the neck. That is the kind of detail that places a bottle in time long before you read the label. This is Gordon & MacPhail’s Glenburgie from the years when the bottler was one of the few places you could find the distillery under its own name at all.

    The expert's description

Glenburgie Old Version 8 Year Old is a Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky bottled by Gordon & MacPhail at 40%.

Eight years is young, but it was normal for the older Gordon & MacPhail ranges, where the distillery character was meant to come through without many years of cask on top. The Glenburgie spirit is soft and fruity, and at 40% the whisky comes out light and round rather than powerful.

Gordon & MacPhail has been bottling Scotch from Elgin since 1895 and was for decades the most important source of single malt from distilleries that released nothing themselves. Glenburgie is one of those — almost the entire output goes into blends, and without bottlers like G&M most people would never have tasted the distillery.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Malt and baked apple, with pale honey and a trace of vanilla. Calm and understated, as older 40% bottlings often are.

    Palate

Soft and light. Pear, honey and cereal malt, with a dry turn mid-palate. The body is slender, but there is more texture than the number on the label suggests.

    Finish

Short to medium. Malt and a dry touch of oak closing quietly.

  • Glenlivet 21 Year Old Gordon & MacPhail bottle with classic label
    Item no.: 22227865438-339

When the Duke of Gordon pushed a new excise law through in 1823, he forced a young farmer named George Smith to pick a side. That choice created the distillery that has since given its name to the entire valley, and to this bottle.

    Expert Description

Glenlivet 21 Year Old Gordon & MacPhail is a Single Highland Malt Whisky, matured for 21 years and bottled at 40%.

The whisky is distilled at The Glenlivet and bottled by the independent bottler Gordon & MacPhail of Elgin, who since 1895 have specialised in selecting and maturing single malt whisky from Scottish distilleries. The Glenlivet distillery's roots trace back to 1815, when illicit distilling was already taking place in the area, long before George Smith leased land at Upper Drumin Farm in 1817 and obtained the first official licence in 1824. The distillery's success led several neighbours to attach "Glenlivet" to their own names, which in 1880 ended in a court case ruling that only one whisky had the right to be called "The Glenlivet".

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Mature and rounded, with dried fruit and a hint of honey, typical of a long-matured Gordon & MacPhail bottling.

    Palate

Soft and rounded with notes of nuts and a light spiced warmth that builds on the fruity base character.

    Finish

Long and elegant, with a dry, lightly oaked close.

James Gordon and John Alexander MacPhail opened their business on South Street in Elgin on 24 May 1895, with the motto "a superior article at a popular price." Like many whisky traders, they also sold grocery goods alongside whisky. Within a year, John Urquhart joined the firm, becoming senior partner in 1915, where he developed the whisky broking business and began bottling single malts under licence from famous distilleries, including The Glenlivet. In 1968 the firm launched the Connoisseurs Choice series, one of the first true independent bottling ranges. In 1993 the company purchased the Benromach distillery, which after five years of refurbishment was officially reopened by Prince Charles in 1998.

Production & Style

Gordon & MacPhail has bottled single malt whisky for over 115 years and today offers more than 350 different expressions from around 70 distilleries. The firm was already, back in the 1960s, first to offer regular higher-strength (100 proof) bottlings.

Signature Style

Versatile, Authentic, Distillery-true
Because Gordon & MacPhail works with so many distilleries, flavour ranges widely - from peated Islay character to softer Speyside style - always with respect for each distillery's individual identity.
