Distillers Edition Whisky

Distillers Edition is Diageo's way of showing what happens when some of Scotland's most iconic malts – Talisker, Lagavulin, Oban, Dalwhinnie, Glenkinchie and Caol Ila – are given an extra finish in specially selected casks. It's the classic distillery character, but drawn out more sharply, as if each whisky was allowed one last, bold step before bottling.

  • Cragganmore Distillers Edition 2003 bottle with port wood finish
    Item no.: 22227865427-212

Cragganmore is already the heaviest of the Speyside classics. Add a port cask and the herbal dryness suddenly has dark berries to push against.

Please note: The bottle is supplied without a carton.

    Expert description

Cragganmore 2003/2015 Distillers Edition 12 years is a Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky finished in port casks and bottled at 40%.

The whisky was distilled in 2003 and bottled in 2015 under the batch code CggD-6567. Distillers Edition is Diageo's annual range in which the Classic Malts distilleries receive a second maturation in a cask suited to their own style. For Cragganmore that means port, laying dark berries and a lightly tart fruit over the herbal, honeyed core. Each vintage is bottled once and never repeated.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Heather and honey first, then plum, dark berries and a warm spiced note from the port wood.

    Palate

Rounder and darker than the standard 12 year old. Raisin, cherry and malt, with sandalwood and light wood smoke beneath. The port brings a tart edge that keeps the sweetness from turning heavy.

    Finish

Long and dry, with dark berries, malt and a herbal warmth fading slowly.

    Flavour profile

Fruity · Dark Berry · Malty · Herbal · Lightly Smoked

    Investment potential

Medium. Each vintage of the Distillers Edition is bottled once and never returns. Older vintages steadily get harder to find as they are drunk.

    Did you know?

Distillers Edition began in the 1990s as a way of showing what a second maturation can do to a familiar whisky. The cask type is fixed per distillery — Cragganmore has had port from the start, while Lagavulin, for instance, always gets Pedro Ximénez.

Amontillado is drier than oloroso and lays in nuts and salted fruit rather than dark sweetness. That is exactly the kind of cask a light Lowland malt can carry without disappearing.

    The expert's description

Glenkinchie Distillers Edition 2003/2015 is a Lowland Single Malt Scotch Whisky with a second maturation in amontillado sherry casks, bottled at 43%.

The whisky was distilled in 2003 and bottled in 2015 after twelve years. The first part of maturation took place in ordinary casks, after which the whisky spent a period in amontillado casks — what Diageo calls double maturation.

Distillers Edition exists for each of the Classic Malts distilleries, and each one was given its own type of sherry. Glenkinchie got amontillado, which is dry and nutty and does not flatten the light distillery style.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Lemon and meadow flowers with nuts, dried apricot and a note of salted caramel from the cask.

    Palate

Softer and rounder than the standard bottling. Vanilla and citrus at the base with nuts, dried fruit and a dry sherry edge on top.

    Finish

Medium length and dry with nuts, spice and a lightly salted close.

    Investment potential

Medium. The 2003/2015 vintage is discontinued, and Distillers Edition appears in new vintages every year, so the older ones quietly disappear from the shelves. It is a range people collect by vintage rather than by single bottle.

    Did you know?

Glenkinchie runs only two pot stills, but they are among the largest in Scotland. The wash still is charged with around 21,000 litres, and that kind of volume gives a light, clean spirit with long copper contact.

About Distillers Edition

Distillers Edition is a series where Diageo takes well-known Classic Malts distilleries such as Lagavulin, Talisker, Cragganmore and Oban and gives them an extra finish in fortified wine casks, including Pedro Ximénez sherry and Amoroso. The concept is an official, annual release for each of the participating distilleries.

History & Background

The concept was introduced in the 1990s as part of Diageo's Classic Malts portfolio and was intended as an accessible way to show what an extra finish can add to an already established whisky. Each Distillers Edition is labelled with two years – the distillation year and the bottling year – to emphasise the long, double-maturation process.

Production & Style

The base whisky first matures in the traditional way before being transferred to fortified wine casks for a period that adds extra depth and sweetness without overpowering the distillery's own character.

Signature Style

Wine-Finished, Full-Bodied, Complex
Sherry or port wine sweetness sits atop each distillery's signature style, whether Lagavulin's smoke or Caol Ila's maritime salt.
