At a military hospital on the Orinoco River, a German-trained doctor spent four years chasing a cure for feverish soldiers' stomach troubles. The cure never became a medicine in the traditional sense, it became the world's best-selling bitters.
Expert's description
Angostura Aromatic Bitters, often called "THE ORIGINAL", is a cocktail bitter at 44.7% ABV, bottled at 20 cl.
Behind the recipe stands Johann Gottlieb Benjamin Siegert, a German-trained doctor who, after fighting alongside Simon Bolivar, was appointed Surgeon-General at the military hospital in the city of Angostura. There, in 1824, he developed the secret blend of herbs and spices that has since become the House of Angostura's trademark. The city of Angostura was a busy trading post on the Orinoco River, and sailors suffering from seasickness were told about the "miracle mixture" the doctor had created, and that is how the bitters spread from a local cure to an international trade good. The recipe remains secret and is still used unchanged today.
