About Angostura Bitter

Angostura Bitter is the world's most famous cocktail bitter, made to a secret recipe of herbs and spices from Trinidad and Tobago. For newcomers it's the bitter that ties classics like Old Fashioned and Manhattan together; for collectors it's notable that the recipe has been kept strictly secret since 1824, known only to a handful of people at any given time, making Angostura one of the world's most closely guarded trade secrets in spirits.

History & Background

The bitter was originally developed in 1824 by German doctor Johann Gottlieb Benjamin Siegert as a medicinal herbal blend, intended to ease stomach ailments among Simón Bolívar's soldiers in the town of Angostura, Venezuela. After Siegert's death, his sons took over production and moved it to Trinidad in 1875, where the House of Angostura is still based today. Along the way the bitter evolved from medicine into an essential cocktail ingredient, as bartenders worldwide discovered its ability to add depth and complexity to drinks. The distinctive bottle with its översized label, originally a printing order mistake, is today just as recognisable as the flavour itself.

Production & Style

The bitters are made from a secret blend of herbs, bark, and spices, infused and distilled according to a recipe known only to a few.

Signature Style

Intense, Spiced, Bitter
The flavor offers an intense, complex bitterness with notes of clove, cinnamon, and other spices.
