About Fernet-Branca

Fernet-Branca is the very archetype of an Italian amaro, a bitter so intense and medicinal that it's either seen as a welcome digestif or a bold challenge. The Branca family has kept the recipe secret for nearly two centuries, and that mystique, combined with the bitter's deep, herbal complexity, has made it a staple among bartenders worldwide.

History & Background

Fernet-Branca was created in 1845 by Bernardino Branca in Milan and remains family-owned, now led by the fifth generation. The drink found a particularly devoted home in Argentina, where Italian immigrants brought it in the late 1800s, and where it's now consumed in far greater quantities than in Italy itself.

Production & Style

The bitter is made by macerating 27 herbs, roots, and spices, including myrrh, chamomile, and saffron, in alcohol, after which the blend is aged in oak casks for at least a year. The exact recipe is known to only a handful of family members, and the maceration itself follows a process largely unchanged since the 1800s.
