Angostura Orange Bitters 28% 10cl Item No: BITT1971 Perhaps the most famous brand of cocktail bitters, this is an orange bitter that has truly made its mark on the world! The legend begins with Johann Gottliev Benjamin Siegert, but known as Dr. Siegert. He originally came from Germany with his doctorate in 1820, but he had the courage to do much more than medicine. He went to Venezuela and joined forces with Simon Bolivar in his fight against the Spanish throne. After that battle was over, Dr. Siegert was appointed Surgeon-General of the Military Hospital in the city of Angostura. More than anything else, Dr. Siegert was a scientist and was very curious to learn more. He had seen soldiers being beaten by enemies both externally and internally. He decided to wrest a cure from nature - and after four years of trial and error, researching and analyzing the quality of tropical herbs and plans, he came up with a unique blend. He called the herbal blend "Amargo Aromatico" or aromatic bitters. The year was 1824, Dr. Siegert hoped that his herbal mixture would help his patients, his close family and friends, but something else happened. From this humble beginning, an international industry emerged. This was during a period of heavy maritime trade around the Caribbean. The city of Angostura on the banks of the Orinoco River was an important trading post. Ships sailed into the harbor from all over the world, and sailors often complained of seasickness. The people of Angostura told of the "miracle concoction" Dr. Siegert had mixed - and Angostura Aromatic Bitters® was born. Dr. Siegert was encouraged to produce Angostura the bitters commercially - and soon it was spread across the globe.
