Berneroy Calvados

A French calvados house from Pays d'Auge, where apples have been the focus since 1912. Berneroy's master blenders hold fast to old, respected methods that express the essence of the region's local history. Every bottle is an interpretation of age-old Norman traditions.

  • Bottle of Berneroy Fine calvados with simple label
    Item no.: 22227865491-19700

In the heart of the Pays d'Auge, where apple trees stand closer together than almost anywhere else in Normandy, the family behind Berneroy has distilled calvados since 1944 with one simple aim: to capture the apple's freshness before the cask makes it heavy.

    Expert description

Berneroy Fine is a French Calvados aged in French oak casks and bottled at 40%.

Fine is the youngest and freshest expression in the Berneroy range, made from calvados aged two to three years. Berneroy traces its roots to 1944, when it began as part of the Camus family of spirit houses, and since 2019 the Norwegian Soerlie family has run the distillery as an independent calvados house in the Pays d'Auge. Fine is built to show the apple in its most direct form, before the weight of long cask ageing takes over.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Crisp, green apple with a hint of pear and soft floral notes underneath.

    Palate

Crunchy and direct, with freshly picked apple and a mild sweetness, unburdened by heavy oak.

    Finish

Short to medium, with apple as the clear final impression.

  • Bottle of Berneroy XO calvados with dark amber colour
    Item no.: 22227865491-19702

Ten years in cask is a long time for a calvados from the Pays d'Auge, and it shows clearly in Berneroy's XO, where the fresh apple has long since gained company from baked, darker notes.

    Expert description

Berneroy XO is a French Calvados aged around ten years in fine French oak casks and bottled at 40%.

XO is the oldest and most complex expression in the Berneroy range, made from calvados with an average age of around ten years. The long ageing gives it a deeper, more layered character than VSOP and Fine, where baked apple and subtle oak notes play a bigger role. Berneroy runs its calvados house in the Pays d'Auge, where the brand traces its roots back to 1944.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Baked apples, caramel and a light, smoky oak note.

    Palate

Rich and complex, with dried fruit, vanilla and a touch of spice.

    Finish

Long, with baked apple and warm oak lingering well after the last sip.

About Berneroy Calvados

Berneroy is a French calvados house from Pays d'Auge in Normandy, one of the region's most respected appellations for apple brandy. For newcomers, it's an approachable, apple-sweet introduction to calvados; for connoisseurs, one of the classic Pays d'Auge houses that insists on double distillation and traditional cask aging.

History & Background

The house traces its roots back to 1912 and has since specialized in calvados distilled according to traditional Pays d'Auge methods. Pays d'Auge is the only calvados appellation that requires double distillation in traditional Charente-style stills, a stricter standard than the broader Calvados AOC designation. For over a century, Berneroy's master blenders have carried on this craft approach, turning apples from Norman orchards into cider before distilling and aging it in oak casks for years.

Production & Style

The Calvados is distilled twice from pressed apple and pear must and then aged in oak casks for several years.

Signature Style

Apple-Fruity, Full-Bodied, Spiced
The flavor offers a full-bodied, apple-fruity character with a touch of spice from the cask aging.
