Sazerac Whiskey

The name Sazerac comes from the Sazerac Coffee House in New Orleans, home of what many consider America's first cocktail. Today, the Sazerac Company lends the name to a range of rye whiskeys that pay tribute to the city's cocktail heritage directly in the glass. It's a whiskey built on a bar's history rather than a distillery's, a rarity in the otherwise distillery-centred whisky world.

    Expert description

Sazerac Rye Kentucky Straight Rye Whiskey is Buffalo Trace Distillery's rye-forward expression, named after the classic Sazerac cocktail, bottled at 45%. Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfort, Kentucky, is the oldest continuously operating distillery in the United States. The site was first built as a commercial distillery in 1858 and later taken over by Colonel Edmund Haynes Taylor Jr., often called 'the father of the modern bourbon industry'. The distillery continued production through Prohibition under a medicinal licence and has been owned by the family-run Sazerac Company since 1992.

About Sazerac

Sazerac is a rye whiskey named after the historic Sazerac Coffee House in New Orleans, home of America's oldest cocktail of the same name. For a newcomer, it's a spicy, robust introduction to American rye; for the connoisseur, Sazerac is interesting because the name connects the whiskey directly to cocktail culture rather than to a single distillery, making the bottle as much a part of the bar as of the whisky shelf.

History & Background

There is not much publicly available history on Sazerac, and the house keeps a relatively low profile about its origins. What is clear is its position in the range, reflected in the style and character described above.

Production & Style

The rye whiskey is distilled from a rye-heavy mash and matured for at least six years before bottling.

Signature Style

Spicy, Peppery, Dry
The whiskey offers a spicy, peppery character with a dry finish.
