Michter's Whiskey

A name from 1700s Pennsylvania rose from the ashes of bankruptcy and found a new home in Kentucky's bourbon country. Michter's story is one of an old craft nearly lost, then rescued by owners obsessed with quality over quantity. Today the name is once again synonymous with small batches, patient aging, and whiskey that rarely reaches the shelf before it's ready.

Michter's core expression — a modern take on a whiskey history spanning 270 years.

    Expert description

Michter's US 1 Small Batch Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey is the distillery's core bourbon expression, bottled at 45.7%. Michter's history dates back to 1753 and Shenk's Whiskey, considered America's first whiskey company, founded in Pennsylvania. Around 1860 the distillery changed its name to Bomberger's, and in the 1950s the name Michter's was created — named after the sons Michael and Peter, whose names were combined into 'Mich-ter's'. After a bankruptcy in 1989, the trademark was revived in the 1990s by Joseph J. Magliocco and his mentor Dick Newman, who moved production to Kentucky. Today Michter's operates from three locations around Louisville: the large Shively Distillery, where production takes place, the historic Fort Nelson building, and a farm in Springfield.

About Michter's Whiskey

Michter's is the American whiskey house that revived a name rooted in 1700s Pennsylvania and gave it new life in Kentucky. The house philosophy is simple but demanding: no whiskey leaves the warehouse until the master distillers judge it ready, no matter how long that takes. For beginners, that means a rich, caramel-forward whiskey with broad appeal, while collectors chase the house's limited US*1 releases, which often sell out within hours and trade on for well above retail.

History & background

The original Michter's name dates back to 1700s Pennsylvania, ranking among the oldest whiskey names in the US. The historic distillery went bankrupt in the 1980s and lay dormant for years until businessmen Joseph J. Magliocco and Richard Newman bought the rights to the name in the 1990s and rebuilt it from scratch in Kentucky. They chose a no-compromise philosophy: small batches, proprietary barrel profiles, and no fixed age statement, because the whiskey is only bottled once it's ready. The strategy has made Michter's one of the most respected and sought-after names in modern American whiskey.

Production & style

The whiskey is distilled in small batches and aged in new, charred oak casks with a particular focus on temperature control during maturation.

Signature style

Full-Bodied, Rich, Caramel
The flavor offers a full-bodied, rich character with clear notes of caramel and spice.
