Don Ramón Mezcal

A Mexican mezcal named after a "Don", a title of respect in Mexican culture. Don Ramón draws on mezcal's rustic roots, where the agave is roasted in earthen pits long before it's ever distilled. It's a taste that carries the landscape - smoke, earth and heat - straight into the glass.
  • Bottle of Don Ramón Espadín Mezcal with clay-art inspired label design
    Item no.: 2227333-44123

In the dry state of Zacatecas, the Espadín agave grows ready for distillation within a few years. Don Ramón's mezcal carries the land with it, all the way into the glass.

    Expert Description

Casa Don Ramón Mezcal Espadín is a Mexican Joven Mezcal with an ABV of 40%. The mezcal is made from 100% Espadín agave grown in Zacatecas and carries a label design inspired by the traditional clay art of the indigenous peoples of the Oaxaca region. Casa Don Ramón is a Mexican brand producing both tequila and mezcal, and it plants two new agave plants for every one harvested.

As a joven mezcal, it is either completely unaged or rested only briefly, so the agave's clean, smoky character comes through clearly. Espadín is the most widely used agave variety for mezcal, partly because it matures faster than many of the other agave varieties used in the category.

    Item no.: 2227333-44124

The Salmiana agave spends a full decade maturing in the highlands of Zacatecas. Don Ramón's mezcal made from this rare variety tells a different story than the one you know from Espadín.

    Expert Description

Casa Don Ramón Mezcal Salmiana is a Mexican Joven Mezcal with an ABV of 40%. The mezcal is made from 100% Salmiana agave, also known as maguey verde, grown in Zacatecas and taking up to ten years to mature before it can be harvested. Casa Don Ramón plants two new agave plants for every one harvested, and the label design is inspired by the traditional clay art of the indigenous peoples of the Oaxaca region.

Salmiana is a large, slow-growing agave that can grow far bigger than many other agave varieties used for mezcal. As a joven mezcal, it is either completely unaged or rested only briefly, giving a profile that differs clearly from the more earthy, vegetal character typically found in mezcal made from Espadín agave.

About Don Ramón

Don Ramón is a Mexican mezcal whose name carries the title 'Don', traditionally used as a respectful form of address in Mexico. For anyone who only knows agave spirits from tequila, Don Ramón is a chance to meet mezcal's more rustic, smoky character - a completely different experience shaped by the traditional earthen pits the agave is roasted in. For collectors, mezcal is one of the most dynamic categories in the spirits world right now, where growing interest in origin, agave variety and traditional craft has made even lesser-known brands sought after.

History & Background

Mezcal's roots go back several hundred years in Mexico, where various indigenous peoples distilled agave long before tequila got its own name and protected status. Don Ramón places itself within that tradition with a name signalling respect for the older generations of mezcaleros - the craftspeople who still today roast, crush and distil agave using methods that have barely changed across generations. The brand is part of the growing export of mezcal from small, local producers to the international market, which has really picked up pace over the last 15-20 years.

Production & Style

The mezcal is distilled from agave roasted in earthen pits, following traditional Mexican mezcal methods.

Signature Style

Smoky, Earthy, Spicy
The flavour is smoky and earthy, with spiced undertones.
