Quinta do Estanho Port

On the steep banks of the Douro river lies a small Port house that has been pressing grapes since the mid-1700s. Quinta do Estanho is Port wine from land that has had almost three centuries to learn itself inside out.

  • Wooden box with three miniature port wine bottles from Quinta do Estanho
    Item no.: 222278643-55

Three miniature tasting glasses - white, ruby and tawny - gathered in one box, letting you experience the full range of a seven-generation estate in one sitting.

    Expert's Description

Quinta do Estanho Gift Box is a gift set with three different Port wines in 5 cl bottles from the Douro Valley in Portugal, with an alcohol content of 19.5%.

The box brings together three classic styles from the estate: a fine white Port, a fresh ruby Port and a cask-matured tawny, allowing you to taste your way through the range from young, fruit-driven Port to the more mature, nutty style, all in one gift set.

Quinta do Estanho can be traced back to 1757, when the estate's wines were included in the very first official demarcation of the Douro region under the Marquis of Pombal. The estate sits on the left bank of the River Pinhão at around 300 metres altitude and has been family-owned across seven generations. Today it is run by the descendants of Jaime Acácio Queiroz Cardoso, who combine traditional foot-treading in stone lagares with modern cellar practices.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

The three styles range from the white Port's bright, citrus-like aroma, through the ruby's fresh dark berries, to the tawny's nutty and caramel notes.

    Palate

The white offers a light, almost dry fruitiness, the ruby is full with dark berry fruit, while the tawny shows roundness with dried fruit and nuts from its cask ageing.

    Finish

Common to all three is a clean, balanced finish that shows the estate's craftsmanship without becoming heavy in a single 5 cl measure.

    Did You Know?

Quinta do Estanho is named after the Portuguese word for tin, a mineral once mined in the area - a detail that still ties the estate's name to the very ground the grapes grow in, rather than to an owning family, as most other quintas are named.

About Quinta do Estanho

Quinta do Estanho lies on the steep slopes of the Douro river, where a favourable microclimate and abundant sun provide ideal conditions for Port production. For newcomers it's an accessible, well-balanced Port at a good price; for collectors, the smaller, family-run quintas often hold surprisingly good vintages, since they don't carry the name or price tag of the big Port houses, yet share the same soil and the same centuries of experience.

History & Background

Quinta do Estanho was founded in 1757, right as the Douro valley was formally organising itself as a defined Port wine region under the Pombaline system. The family behind the quinta has produced Port for export for nearly 270 years since, through both golden periods and the crises that have hit the region along the way. In recent years the house has expanded its range with table wines from the same land, a natural extension of the long winemaking tradition.

Production & Style

The grapes are hand-harvested on the estate's own terraces and trodden or pressed by traditional method before the wine is fortified with grape spirit. Maturation happens in oak casks in the estate's own cellars.

Signature Style

Terroir-Driven, Fruity, Concentrated
Expect a concentrated profile of dark forest berries, a touch of schist minerality, and a warm, long finish.

Did You Know?

While the big port houses typically blend grapes from many different plots, everything in Quinta do Estanho's port comes from the estate's own terraces, a single-estate philosophy that is relatively rare in the Douro.
