Hutcheson Port Wine

Hutcheson carries two names on its label - one Scottish, one Portuguese - a legacy from a time when British trading houses dominated the Douro Valley's port trade. The Feuerheerd & Associados connection tells the story of how foreign families shaped port's international identity for centuries. This is port with a foot in two cultures.

  • Bottle of Hutcheson Colheita 2004 Feuerheerd with dark amber label
    Item no.: 22227865464-10208

Two old trading names meet on this label, and behind them lie more than two decades of patient ageing. 2004 was the harvest year - the rest is time in cask and a name that has survived several mergers in Porto's trading history.

    Expert's Description

Hutcheson 2004 Colheita Feuerheerd is a Portuguese Colheita Port from the Douro Valley, aged in oak casks and bottled at 20%.

Colheita means 'harvest' in Portuguese and denotes a Tawny Port from a single, named vintage - here 2004 - unlike the vast majority of Tawny Ports, which are blended from several years. By regulation the Port must spend at least seven years in oak cask before it can be sold, but this bottle has had considerably longer to mature.

The Feuerheerd name comes from one of Porto's older trading houses, and in 1996 Feuerheerd Bros merged with Hutcheson under the name Hutcheson, Feuerheerd & Associados. The double name on the label is therefore no coincidence, but a direct trace of this merger of two historic Port houses.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

The nose is deep and complex, with dried figs, walnut and a hint of roasted coffee.

    Palate

The palate is full-bodied and mature, with caramelised sugar, orange peel and a fine, almost syrupy sweetness.

    Finish

The finish is very long, warm and spiced with a lightly bitter nutty close.

    Investment Potential

A Colheita with more than two decades of cask ageing is a sought-after collector's style, because it combines a documented single vintage with a rarely long maturation period - a combination that becomes harder to find as older stocks are depleted.

    Did You Know?

The Feuerheerd name on the label dates back to 1996, when the trading house Feuerheerd Bros merged with Hutcheson to form Hutcheson, Feuerheerd & Associados - a merger typical of Porto's trading history, where many old houses have fused together under shared ownership over time.

    Item no.: 22227865465-5698

A single harvest year, captured and set aside in cask for more than a decade before it was time to fill the bottle. The double name on the label tells its own story of two merged Port houses.

    Expert's Description

Hutcheson 2009 Colheita Feuerheerd is a Portuguese Colheita Port from the Douro Valley, aged in oak casks and bottled at 20%.

Colheita means 'harvest' in Portuguese and denotes a Tawny Port from a single, named vintage - here 2009 - where the law requires at least seven years of cask ageing before it can be sold. This bottle's long maturation gives it a depth younger Tawny Ports don't achieve.

The Feuerheerd name comes from one of Porto's older trading houses, which merged with Hutcheson in 1996 under the name Hutcheson, Feuerheerd & Associados. Since 2006 the Spanish-owned Sogevinus group has run production, but the house's reputation for Colheita styles specifically goes back much further.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

The nose offers dried raisins, roasted hazelnuts and a light cigar-box note.

    Palate

The palate is round and complex, with caramel, orange peel and a fine acidity that keeps the sweetness in check.

    Finish

The finish is long and warm with a lingering nutty note.

    Investment Potential

A single-vintage Colheita with more than 15 years of cask ageing belongs to the rarer bottle types on the market, making it a natural target for Port collectors chasing documented vintages from respected houses.

    Did You Know?

When Hutcheson and Feuerheerd merged in 1996, it became common to see both names on the same label - a practice many old Port houses in the Douro have continued after mergers and acquisitions, as a way of preserving both names' history.

    Item no.: 059763-615-479

One harvest, one cask, many years of patience. Colheita is Port's answer to the single vintage - here from 2010, where the grapes were left to mature quietly, long before the bottle was ever filled.

    Expert's Description

Hutcheson 2010 Colheita is a Portuguese Colheita Port from the Douro Valley, aged in oak casks and bottled at 20%.

The word Colheita simply means 'harvest' in Portuguese and denotes a Tawny Port from a single, named vintage, unlike most Tawny Ports, which are blended from several years. Port regulations require a minimum of seven years' cask ageing before a Colheita can be sold - in practice many spend far longer, often decades, on oak.

Hutcheson is one of Porto's older trading houses, founded in 1881 by Thomas Page Hutcheson and Alexander Davidson Taylor. The house has historically specialised in exactly the Tawny and Colheita styles and is today part of the Sogevinus group, which took over the running of the formerly family-owned Douro houses in 2006.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

The nose offers dried apricot, walnut and a mild caramel tone, shaped by more than a decade of cask ageing.

    Palate

The palate is round and mature, with raisin, orange peel and a fine, almost honeyed sweetness.

    Finish

The finish is long and warm, with a light nutty bitterness that balances the sweetness.

    Investment Potential

A genuine single-vintage Colheita from a named harvest year is a recognised collector's style, because each bottle tells the story of that specific year - unlike most Tawny Ports, which are blended from several vintages and can't be dated in the same way.

    Did You Know?

Because the law requires a minimum of seven years' cask ageing before a Colheita can leave the cellar, the producer is free to leave it far longer - some Colheita Ports aren't sold until decades after the harvest year, making each bottle a small piece of liquid history.

  • Bottle of Hutcheson Colheita 2011 with amber, vintage-dated label
    Item no.: 059763-615-480

The label carries two dates - the harvest year and the bottling year - and between them lies the story of this Port. 2011 was the grapes' year; everything that's happened since is time, patience and a cask.

    Expert's Description

Hutcheson 2011 Colheita is a Portuguese Colheita Port from the Douro Valley, aged in oak casks and bottled at 20%.

Under Portuguese Port regulations, a Colheita label must always state both the harvest year and the bottling year, so the consumer can see exactly how long the Port spent in cask before being bottled - a form of transparency unique to this particular category of Port.

Hutcheson was founded in 1881 by Thomas Page Hutcheson and Alexander Davidson Taylor and has specialised throughout its history in Tawny and Colheita styles. Since 2006 the Sogevinus group has run production, but the house's focus on single-vintage Ports remains the same.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

The nose offers dried fig, roasted almonds and a light caramel note.

    Palate

The palate is soft and rounded, with raisin, orange marmalade and a fine acidity that keeps the sweetness fresh.

The finish is long and warm, with a lightly bitter nutty note at the close.

    Investment Potential

Colheita Ports like this one are a recognised collector's style, because each bottle documents a specific vintage and ageing period down to the year - unlike most other Tawny Ports, where the blending of several vintages makes it impossible to trace a single harvest.

    Did You Know?

Because the law requires both the harvest year and the bottling year to appear on the label, a Colheita always lets you calculate the exact ageing period - something no other type of Port on the market allows.

About Hutcheson Port Wine

Hutcheson Port is a Portuguese port house with roots in the Scottish trading family Hutcheson, later linked to the house of Feuerheerd & Associados. For the newcomer it's a classic port experience from one of the Douro Valley's more traditional producers; for the history-minded, the name itself tells a story of how Scottish and English trading families from the 1700s and 1800s helped build the port industry as we know it today, their names still visible on labels generations later.

History & Background

Scottish and English trading families played a central role in developing the Douro Valley's port trade from the 1700s onward, with many establishing trading houses in Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia to export port to the British market. The Hutcheson name comes from one such Scottish trading family and was later linked to the Portuguese house Feuerheerd & Associados. This blending of Scottish trading tradition and Portuguese wine production is typical of many of the Douro Valley's older port houses, where international names still bear witness to the region's long trading history.

Production & Style

Hutcheson produces port wine using traditional methods from grapes grown in the Douro Valley's terraced vineyards, one of the world's oldest demarcated wine regions.

Signature Style

Full-bodied, Sweet, Complex
The taste offers a classic port wine character with rich sweetness and a complex, full-bodied structure.
