Carlos I Brandy

Named after a king, blended with a solera that is never fully emptied. Carlos I is the brandy Spaniards themselves reach for when the occasion calls for something extra - rich, round and shaped by decades of quiet ageing in the Jerez region. This is a bottle with royal self-assurance.

  • Bottle of Carlos I Imperial XO brandy with dark label and royal motif
    Item no.: 22227865491-18525

The story goes that a cellar master in Jerez discovered some forgotten, mysterious casks tucked in a corner of the bodega back in 1889. What later became Carlos I is named after the Spanish king Charles I, portrayed on horseback by Titian after the Battle of Mühlberg.

    Expert's Description

Carlos I Imperial XO is a Spanish Brandy de Jerez, bottled at 38%.

The brandy is produced by the house of Osborne, founded in 1772 in El Puerto de Santa María at the heart of the Jerez district, one of Spain's oldest and most respected houses in sherry and brandy. Carlos I is traditionally distilled from the Airén grape using alquitaras, pot stills of Arab origin.

Maturation follows the dynamic criaderas y soleras system, where younger and older brandy are continuously blended through a series of American oak casks that previously held sherry. For Imperial XO, the casks average more than 20 years old, giving the brandy an unusual depth.

The dynamic system means each bottle holds brandy of many different ages, brought together through decades of careful blending rather than a single vintage.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Vanilla and liquorice meet a deep sherry character from the old casks.

    Palate

Soft and light on the palate, with a pleasant feel balanced by the vanilla and liquorice tones.

    Finish

Medium length and round, with lingering sweetness and a hint of dried fruit.

The Carlos I name comes from a painting by Titian depicting the Spanish king Charles I on horseback after the Battle of Mühlberg in 1548, and the portrait still adorns the bottle's label to this day.

Where Imperial XO draws its depth from casks that have rested for decades, Solera Gran Reserva is a more youthful, yet still sherry-driven expression from the same house, where the aroma of the former sherry casks remains clear in the glass.

    Expert's Description

Carlos I Solera Gran Reserva Sherry Cask is a Spanish Brandy de Jerez, bottled at 40%.

Like the rest of the house's brandy, Carlos I Solera Gran Reserva is produced by Osborne, founded in 1772 in El Puerto de Santa María, and is traditionally distilled using alquitaras, pot stills of Arab origin.

Maturation follows the same dynamic criaderas y soleras system as the rest of the range, but here the casks average around 10 years old, giving a fresher, more sherry-forward style than the much older Imperial XO.

The shorter ageing means the character from the former sherry casks is more prominent, while the brandy's own sweetness and spice keep the balance.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Vanilla and liquorice sit close to a clear sherry tone.

    Palate

Soft and light on the palate, with a pleasant roundness where the sherry's dryness meets the brandy's sweetness.

    Finish

Short to medium, with a final, dry sherry note.

    Did You Know?

Both Solera Gran Reserva and Imperial XO come from the same dynamic solera system at Osborne, but because the solera is constantly drawn from and replenished with younger brandy, the two expressions are never quite identical from bottle to bottle.

About Carlos I

Carlos I is a Spanish Gran Reserva brandy from Bodegas Osborne in El Puerto de Santa María, named after the Spanish and Holy Roman emperor Charles I/V. For the newcomer it's an accessible entry into the Spanish brandy style, rich and sweet compared to the drier French cognac; for the connoisseur, the interest lies in the solera system, where the brandy is blended through layers of casks of different ages, so every bottle carries traces of liquid decades old.

History & Background

Osborne was founded in 1772 by the Englishman Thomas Osborne Mann in El Puerto de Santa María, originally as a sherry house, but the company later expanded its production to include brandy made using the same solera method. Carlos I was launched as the house's prestigious Gran Reserva brandy, named after Charles I of Spain, who also reigned as Holy Roman Emperor Charles V. Osborne remains one of Spain's most recognised names in both sherry and brandy today, with its iconic black bull silhouette a familiar sight along Spanish highways.

Production & Style

The brandy is distilled from grapes and matured using the solera system in former sherry casks, giving it a deep, complex character.

Signature Style

Full-Bodied, Sherry-Toned, Complex
The flavour is full-bodied and complex, with a clear sherry influence from the casks.
