Pusser's West Indies Rum

Pusser's is the rum the British Royal Navy issued as a daily ration for over 300 years, until the tradition was abolished on a day veterans call "Black Tot Day". Today it's the only rum entitled to use the name "Navy Rum" under the original recipe from the Navy's own blending records.

  • Pusser's British Navy 15 Year Charred Oak Barrels Rum bottle
    Item no.: 22227865480-67093-0343

Until 31 July 1970, known as Black Tot Day, every British naval officer received his daily rum ration. This 15 year old edition recreates the historic, Admiralty-approved blend.

    Expert Description

Pusser's British Navy 15 Year is a Caribbean Rum aged 15 years in charred oak barrels and bottled at 40%.

The rum builds on the Admiralty-approved blend that was historically heavily influenced by rum from the double wooden pot stills of Port Mourant, Guyana, in operation since 1732. Pusser's Rum carries on the tradition of the daily rum ration that all British naval personnel received up until Black Tot Day in 1970, and has been dubbed "the single malt of rum" by Forbes for its craftsmanship.

The result is a rich, complex rum, where Demerara sugar and dark dried fruits meet caramelised biscuit and spice.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Classic Demerara sugar, molasses, dried fruits, island spices and caramel.

    Palate

Caramel and dark dried fruit with a pleasantly smooth finish on charred oak.

    Finish

Vanilla like caramel biscuits and baking spice.

  • Pusser's Rum British Navy Barbados bottle
    Item no.: 22227865449-252

From 1655 to 1970, every sailor in the British Royal Navy received their daily rum tot, a fixed recipe kept secret for over three centuries. When the Royal Navy ended the tradition, Pusser's secured the right to recreate the exact recipe for the public.

    Expert Description

Pusser's Rum British Navy is a Rum from Barbados distilled from a blend of five stills and aged in charred oak barrels, bottled at 40%.

The rum is built on the original recipe the Royal Navy used for the daily rum tot from around 1655 until 1970, when the tradition was discontinued. In 1979, American entrepreneur Charles Tobias gained access to the previously secret recipe and established Pusser's Rum Ltd on Tortola in the British Virgin Islands to recreate it for the public. The name "pusser" is navy slang for the officer responsible for the ship's rum store and the daily ration.

The rum is made entirely from natural ingredients with no added flavourings, built on a blend from five different stills, including the world's last remaining wooden pot still.

    Tasting Notes

  • Pusser's Gunpowder Proof British Navy Rum bottle
    Item no.: 22227865449-280

Before modern hydrometers existed, the British Navy tested rum strength by pouring it over gunpowder and lighting it. If the powder still ignited with a steady blue flame, the strength was correct. Gunpowder Proof is Pusser's tribute to that exact strength.

    Expert Description

Pusser's Gunpowder Proof is a Rum from Barbados and the British Virgin Islands, bottled at the original admiralty strength of 54.5%.

The rum is built on the same historic recipe as the house's standard British Navy expression, but is bottled at the precise "gunpowder proof" strength the navy used for its gunpowder test, back when alcohol meters didn't yet exist. The blend follows the admiralty's original recipe, as used until the Royal Navy officially discontinued the daily rum tot on 31 July 1970.

The higher strength gives a more concentrated flavour experience than the standard expression, with a deeper, more warming character that underscores the rum's roots as a spirit built to hold up on a ship for months at a time.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Pungent molasses, treacle, caramel, honey and vanilla, complemented by oak, cinnamon, nutmeg and ginger.

    Palate

Full-bodied and robust with caramel, banana bread, spice cake and roasted nuts.

The name Gunpowder Proof comes from the historic method sailors used to verify their rum tot hadn't been watered down by a dishonest quartermaster: mixed with gunpowder, the rum still had to be able to ignite the flame.

Gunpowder and rum share a long, common history in the British Navy - this release is even named "Gunpowder Proof" after the old method of testing a rum's strength by igniting gunpowder soaked in it.

    Expert Description

Pusser's Gunpowder Proof Spiced British Navy Rum is a spiced Rum from Guyana, bottled at a full 54.5%.

Pusser's is built on the original recipe used by the Royal Navy for its daily rum rations until 1970, when the tradition was stopped. This release is spiced with selected spices on top of the powerful Guyanese rum base and bottled at "gunpowder proof" - the old strength at which the rum could ignite gunpowder if spilled on it, a simple but effective way to test alcohol content before hydrometers became common on board.

The name Pusser's is slang for "purser", the officer responsible for issuing the navy's rum rations - a duty that made the name a fixed part of British naval history.

    Item no.: 059333-859

There is navy rum, and then there is Black Strap. Pusser's Night Watch takes the classic British navy style and turns up the darkness with a dose of some of the world's finest blackstrap molasses.

    Expert Description

Pusser's Rum Night Watch Black Strap is a Blended Rum from Guyana and the USA, bottled at 40% with no added colour.

While most Pusser's rums are made exclusively from Guyanese rum, Night Watch takes a different path, blending Guyanese rum - some of it distilled on the historic wooden still - with an American rum made from Louisiana blackstrap molasses, distilled at Hilton Head Distillery in South Carolina. The release was launched to mark Trafalgar Day on 21 October and is limited to a small production run.

The combination of the two rum styles produces a deep, dark and characterful rum in the classic navy style, clearly inspired by the rum historically issued to sailors in the British Royal Navy.

  • Pusser's Select Aged 151 British Navy Rum Guyana bottle
    Item no.: 22227865479-1106-1972707

151 is the number that gives the bottle its name, a reference to the old British navy's overproof standard, back when rum was still part of sailors' daily ration.

    Expert Description

Pusser's Select Aged 151 is a Guyana Rum, a blend from Pusser's Rum, aged a minimum of 3 years in ex-bourbon casks and bottled at cask strength, 75.5%.

The rum is based on distillate from Guyanese molasses, including from the famous Port Mourant wooden double pot still, one of the last of its kind still in operation. Select Aged 151 closely follows the Admiralty's historic regulations for the official navy rum ration, which was issued to British sailors up until 1970, when the tradition was finally abolished. Pusser's Rum later took over the rights to continue the recipe and the name.

The style is intense and powerful, with a deep, dark sweetness carrying the entire historic overproof heritage forward.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Treacle, stone fruit compote and dark cane syrup, with marzipan and tobacco.

Pusser's famous navy recipe meets the spice cabinet. The Spiced edition builds on the original British Navy heritage, layering vanilla and warm spice on top of the molasses weight.

    Expert Description

Pusser's Spiced British Navy is a spiced Premium Spirit Drink based on Pusser's classic navy rum recipe and bottled at 37.5%.

The base is the same molasses-based rum blend Pusser's has produced since 1655, when the British Royal Navy issued sailors their daily rum ration, a tradition that only ended in 1970. Pusser's has preserved the original recipe and, in this edition, adds natural spices such as vanilla, cinnamon and a hint of nutmeg, giving the drink a sweeter, more approachable profile than the classic British Navy expression.

That makes the Spiced edition a natural bridge between the historic navy rum's heavy molasses character and a modern spiced rum style.

    Tasting Notes

Vanilla and warm cinnamon over a dark molasses base, with a hint of nutmeg.

About Pusser's West Indies Rum

Pusser's West Indies Rum is based on the original recipe the British Royal Navy used for its daily rum rations from 1655 to 1970, a blend of several Caribbean rum styles composed by the Navy's own "pusser" (purser). When the ration was abolished in 1970, the Pusser's company secured the rights to the original recipe and the Navy's pot-still distillates, making it the only rum marketed as authentic "Navy Rum". For collectors, the historical link to the Navy and the rare overproof editions are a major part of the appeal, while newcomers get a bold, dark rum with a story stretching back to the 1600s.

History & Background

The British Royal Navy began issuing daily rum rations to its sailors in 1655, a tradition that continued for 315 years until safety concerns aboard modern, technically advanced ships led the Admiralty to abolish the ration on 31 July 1970, a date veterans still mark every year as "Black Tot Day". When the tradition ended, entrepreneur Charles Tobias secured the rights to the Navy's original recipe and remaining pot-still stocks and founded the Pusser's Rum company to carry the legacy forward commercially. Today part of Pusser's profits is still donated to charity for Navy veterans through the Royal Navy Sailors' Fund, known as the "Tot Fund".

History & Background

The British Royal Navy issued a daily rum ration to its sailors from 1655 until the so-called "Black Tot Day" on 31 July 1970, when the tradition officially ended. The name "Pusser's" comes from naval slang for "purser", the officer responsible for issuing the ration. After the tradition ended, a group of enthusiasts secured the original recipe and launched Pusser's Rum as a civilian tribute to the Navy's rum heritage.

Production & Style

The rum is made according to the original naval recipe, blending rum from several Caribbean sources to recreate the precise flavour profile sailors knew for centuries.

Signature Style
