A German doctor traveled to Venezuela in 1820 to help the rebel Simón Bolívar in his fight against Spanish colonial rule. Dr. Johann Siegert brewed a bitter, healing tonic for the fever-stricken soldiers, a drink that later became world-famous under the name Angostura Bitters. What fewer people know is that the same house today also produces award-winning rum, including the multi-honored 1919 series.

As surgeon general of the rebel army, Siegert developed a bitter tonic from local herbs and plants to treat the soldiers' fever and stomach ailments, and by 1824 the drink was already becoming famous under the name Angostura. The company later moved to Trinidad & Tobago, where it remains headquartered, and naturally expanded its production into rum as sugarcane grew right outside its door. Today Angostura distills over 50 million liters of rum a year and has cemented its place as one of the Caribbean's largest and most versatile spirits producers.
